Cafe Shelf Tutorial and GIVEAWAY!

August 30, 2009 AT 8:30 pm 260 Comments

Alright ladies! Here we go!

I am going to share with you how you can make your VERY OWN Ballards Design-style cafe shelf for a fraction of what it costs in the magazine.

Aren’t they beautiful? Well, they are expensive too! They range from $99.00-$139.00!

I wanted some of these shelves in my kitchen, so I told my hubby and he made me some…

IMG_2911

Didn’t he do a good job? I posted about that project here.

So why am I posting about them again, you ask?

Because of a comment left by a viewer on Lorie’s blog, Be Different…Act Normal. She has a great little blog that highlights a ton of adorable ideas. She posted about my cafe shelves, which you can see here.

Someone left a comment on her post that caught my eye. It said, “The key phrase is :”her husband made these for her”. Not going to happen at my house.”

It got me thinking….

Yes, I am very lucky that I have a husband that likes to make things like this for me. And I know that there are a lot of ladies in blogland that do not live with a carpenter!

So can a woman make this shelf by herself? YES, she can!

I’m going to show you how! And I am going to do it all by myself!

And then I am going to give it away! Yeah!

This post will be long, so if you are not interested in making this shelf, you may want to scroll on down to the end of the post to find out about my GIVEAWAY. :)

Here is what you need:

*1×8 piece of pine (because it is the least expensive)

*a piece of trim

*2 corbels

*hammer and finishing nails (or nail gun)

*Miter box and saw (or an electric miter saw)

*wood glue and wood filler

*tape measure

Lowes is my preferred place to shop, and it is just five minutes from my house.

But, Home Depot has a better selection of corbels. So I took pictures at Home Depot to show you the type of wood and trim you could buy.

I discovered that Home Depot had a better selection of corbels when we were making the cabinets for our guest house.

You can see posts about my guest house by clicking on the label in my sidebar.

IMG_2298

Here is an example of the type of wood you will need for your shelf.

IMG_3132

You can get a 1×12 or 1×8 piece depending on how deep you want your shelf.

IMG_3133

The piece above is 8 inches deep, like the ones in my kitchen. However, you cannot stack dinner plates on my shelves, so if you want to put plates on yours, you may want to go with a 1×12 piece.

You need to decide how long you want your shelves, 3 feet, 4 feet, etc. You could probably make two shelves from this one piece of wood that is only $5.83!

HERE’S A TIP….Let the workers at Home Depot cut the boards the length you want them so you don’t have to! It’s FREE!

Tell them you want them to cut it 3 feet long (or however long you need it), and they’ll do it for you!

Then you need to find your trim. You can pick whatever type you like at this point. But here is an example of what mine looks like.

IMG_3136

It’s $1.04 per linear foot. I think this piece is about 8 feet long, so it would cost about $8.00.

Here is the one I already had at home that my husband got at Lowe’s.

IMG_3151

It has a little fancier shape on the bottom, but I couldn’t find one like it at Home Depot. They may have it, but it was late and I had my two year old with me, so I may have missed it. :0)

Then you can pick out your corbels.

There are a bunch of choices, so you can pick the ones you like best.

IMG_3137

IMG_3139

IMG_3141

Since the shelf I am making for my giveaway is smaller, I used the littlest corbel which cost $5.25 a piece.

IMG_3137

So, If I bought all of these pieces, I would have spent less than $25.00.

Now, if you get the workers at Home Depot to cut your board, you only have to cut the trim pieces at home.

Some of you may be comfortable using power tools, and some of you may not. If not, I wanted to show you how to use a miter box and saw. This will allow you to cut a trim piece at a 45 degree angle without using an electric miter saw.

You can get the miter box by itself for less than $5.00.

IMG_3142

If you don’t have a saw, you can get them both for less than $8.00.

IMG_3143 If you don’t have finishing nails, you will need to get some like these…

IMG_3173

I already had these at home so I am not sure of the cost.

Again, I am using a board and some trim that we already had, but I bought the corbels.

IMG_3152

My board was 28 inches long. Yours can be bigger if you’d like.

IMG_3153

So to start, I cut one end of my trim at a 45 degree angle.

You can use the miter box for this.

IMG_3154

Or the electric saw…this thing scares me to death!

IMG_3157

You can swing the handle from side to side depending at what angle you need to cut the trim.

IMG_3158

I cut the trim on one side and then lined it up on board to mark the other end.

IMG_3155

Here’s the other end…See how I just marked it where the corner of the board meets the trim?

IMG_3156

When putting it on the saw, lower the blade slowly to see if the blade will line up on your pen mark. If it does, then cut away!

IMG_3159

For the two small side trim pieces, you need to cut the trim flat on the ends. You can use the middle slot in the miter box for that (or use the electric miter saw).

IMG_3163

Then I marked the point where the corner of the board meets the trim piece. See my little pen mark? That’s where you want the blade to hit when you cut the angle.

IMG_3168

Then you “45” the side pieces to match the front trim piece. Again, using the miter box or electric miter saw.

IMG_3170 =”420″ border=”0″ />

Don’t worry if there are small gaps, we’ll fix those in a minute…

Here’s the other side…

IMG_3174

Next, you want to apply wood glue to the trim pieces before nailing them on.

I used a stainable wood glue because that is what we already had. But you can use any kind.

IMG_3175

Apply it to the shelf…

IMG_3176

Then attach the trim piece with a nail gun…

IMG_3177

Or a hammer and finishing nails…

(I am using my upholstery hammer because my hubby’s hammer is at my parents’ house. He’s been installing a new shower for them.)

IMG_3178

(Now I know what happened to my wood glue! That rascal!)

Repeat these steps with the remaining trim pieces.

We are almost finished girls!

Now you need to attach the corbels.

I measured 6 inches in on both sides, but you can place them wherever you want.

IMG_3181

Make sure than you line up the back of the corbel and the shelf evenly.

IMG_3184

I applied wood glue underneath the corbel and then hammered the nails in at an angle so they wouldn’t go through the top of the shelf. You may not have to worry about that if your nails are shorter than mine.

IMG_3185

You could also use the nail gun for this part.

Now for the details…you will have little nail holes that need to be filled with wood filler.

IMG_3187

I didn’t have wood filler at home, so I used white caulk.

IMG_3180

It’s the kind you can paint.

IMG_3188

Looks much better!

IMG_3190

I also used the caulk to fill in any little cracks between the trim and wood.IMG_3179

And I’m finished…well, except for painting it!

IMG_3192

This is the paint I used. I got it during the Glidden free paint giveaway, and of course I chose the color black!

But if you have some black spray paint around the house, I’m sure you could use that too.

IMG_3194

Just paint away, baby!

IMG_3195

And WE. ARE. DONE.

IMG_3197

Now I am going to give it away.

Here’s how you can win this shelf…

1. Leave a comment and I will enter your name in the drawing.

2. If you are a follower, tell me in your comment, and I will enter your name again.

3. Post about this giveaway on your blog with a link back to this post, and I will enter your name TWO more times! Just be sure to tell me in your comment if you posted about it on your blog. :)

That’s a total of 4 chances.

I will announce the winner on Friday, September 4th.

Good luck, and thanks for letting me share this project with you!

WARNING: I am not a professional shelf maker, and this shelf will not be as perfect as the ones in the Ballards Design magazine. But hey, it’s FREE! So if you win and you don’t like it, sell it at a garage sale and make a couple of bucks!

I am linking this post to Met Monday at Between Naps on the Porch. Be sure to stop by there for more great ideas.

Liquid Prayers

August 28, 2009 AT 11:35 am 51 Comments

I wanted to give you an update on my mom.

She started chemo yesterday.

My dad, sister, brother and I went with her to the doctor’s office.

We learned that it is definitely stage 4 gastric cancer. It is in her stomach and liver, and they found another spot in her lung.

We were very thankful to find out the results from her MRI. The cancer is not in her brain.

I was very emotional yesterday. I cannot explain the overwhelming love I have for my mother right now!

It is difficult to see her feeling so weak. But I can testify that her spirit is stronger than ever. She has such an amazing trust in her heavenly Father.

I was sitting with her in the room when the nurse came in to put the IV in Mom’s arm. Mom looked more beautiful than ever to me.

As the nurse was inserting the IV, Mom began to tell her how wonderful the nurses have been to her over the past few weeks. She said, “You ladies have all been so precious and gentle. You are the best! It has been like “heaven” here. I can feel your love in the care you give.”

As I sat in the chair and listened, the tears began welling up in my eyes. I thought, “There she goes again….encouraging others.” Even though Mom is going through the most difficult period of her life, she is thinking of others. She is always thinking of how to bless others. It’s nothing new to me. I’ve seen it all my life. It’s in her DNA.

I was trying so hard to be strong and not cry in front of her but then Mom looked up at me, noticed my watery eyes and said, “Oh, Traci…”

I blinked, and the tears began rolling down my cheeks.

“It’s okay, sweetie, you can cry.” she said.

I apologized for not being stronger and tried to “dry it up” before my older sister came back in and saw me. She had told me to stay strong.

Then she looked at me with such love and said, “You know what tears are, don’t you?”

I shook my head “no”.

“Tears are liquid prayers that flow straight to the heart of God.”

Oh, Mom, you have done it again. Always delivering the perfect words for my hurting heart.

“Then God’s getting flooded.” I said with a smile.

She sat there peacefully as they administered the chemo. Beside her chair was her Bible, some books on healing, and a tape with headphones on healing from her cousin, Peggy.

Her sister-in-law, Lois, told her to keep saying, “The Joy of the Lord is my Strength.” Nehemiah 8:10

Throughout these very difficult past few weeks, my mom has had JOY and has found much STRENGTH in the Lord.

My sister and I spent the night at her house last night to keep an eye on her.

She is doing surprisingly well. She feels tired, but has been able to eat.

She goes back for her next chemo treatment in three weeks.

I appreciate all of the wonderful comments you have left for me. My mom reads them too, and she is so thankful that I am receiving encouragement from all of my blogging friends. We appreciate your continual prayers as we continue this journey.

Blessings to you all!

Burlap Covered Books

August 25, 2009 AT 11:50 pm 28 Comments

I wanted to share a quick project with you.

Since it was super cheap and easy, I am linking it to

Click on the picture to check out other inexpensive projects.

And since I did it myself, I am linking it to DIY Day at A Soft Place to Land.

Let me back up…

Several weeks ago, I shared with you a BIG project where I turned my big brown corner cabinet from this…

IMG_2615

to this…

IMG_2786

If you missed that post, you can see it here.

Now back to my little project for today.

I was trying to come up with some accessories for my “new” entertainment center.

I love the fabric covered books I’ve seen in Ballard Designs magazine. (The same magazine I got the inspiration for my new entertainment center.)

See them on the far right?

Here’s another inspiration photo that I found at My Sweet Savannah.

restoration_hardware_9

I’ve noticed a lot of books getting covered in solid, neutral fabrics.

Well, I had some burlap that I got at Hobby Lobby when it was $1.99 a yard. How cool is that?

I got some old books and my trusty glue gun…

and got busy…

IMG_2883

I cut the burlap a little bigger than the outside of the book.

IMG_2884

Then I very sloppily (is that a word?) glued the burlap to the inside of the book.

I had a little “flap” left over on the top and bottom of the book that I just rolled up and glued down. I didn’t care if the burlap stuck to the pages because these books are just “for looks”.

IMG_2885

WARNING: Burlap has small holes in which the scalding hot glue can seep through and burn your fingers!

(I wore band-aids on several fingers for several days. Didn’t want to gross you out with pictures of the blisters.)

No pain, no gain, right?

Here are the results….

IMG_2928

I love them!

IMG_2929

Aren’t they sweet? I actually ended up making four, and put a candle beside them.

IMG_2937

I can’t come up with an exact cost, but I already had the books and the glue for my glue gun. I used less than half of the yard of burlap, so I guess this may have cost me about $1.00?

Love it!

Check out my drop cloth curtains in this picture? I’ll be sharing about those in a future post…

IMG_2936

That’s all for now!

Blessings,

The Inspiration for Painting my Kitchen…

August 22, 2009 AT 9:17 am 21 Comments

ss_101320785

I fell in love with this house in the Summer 2009 publication of Better Homes and Garden “Decorating” magazine.

ss_101320788

ss_101320786

I noticed how the white trim really stood out against the paint color of the walls.

ss_101320784

I have always loved the contrast of black and white.

ss_101320799

Look at this beautiful monogram…

ss_101320801

There are so many different patterns in this house, but they go together perfectly.

ss_101320792

I LOVE this home office with the adorable touches of pink. I need more pink in my house!

ss_101320789

Look how beautiful the burlap curtains are in this bedroom…

ss_101320794

ss_101320796

And I’m loving this chair…I saw an old chair like this at Goodwill that I’m thinking I might could turn it into a real beauty!

ss_101320797

Ahhhhh…..touches of pink again!

ss_101320790

Wouldn’t you love to blog on this back porch? I’ve seen burlap tablecloths like this one in Ballard Designs magazine…but I know I could make one for a lot cheaper!

ss_101320809

SO, I was trying to find a new paint color for my kitchen this summer because I was tired of my yellow walls.

I tried a color called “Oyster”, and I hated it. My walls literally “glowed” when the sun shone on them.

Then I painted my kitchen a color called “natural”. It looked better, but it still wasn’t what I wanted.

When I saw the above pictures in the magazine, I really liked the color of the walls in the living room. I thought if it looked good enough to be featured in a magazine, then it was definitely good enough for my little house. And I thought it couldn’t be worse than what I had.

So I painted my kitchen for the THIRD time. (Yes, I am crazy!)

AND I LOVE IT!

I painted my den, foyer, and upstairs hallway the same color.

The color you ask?

Khaki Shade by Sherwin Williams

When I posted about the cafe shelves in my kitchen, I had several people ask me what color I had painted my walls.

So there you have it.

When I bought the paint at Sherwin Williams, they told me it was one of their best sellers. Yeah, for me!

IMG_2921

Here is a picture of my kitchen. I will be posting about more changes I made in th
e kitchen in future posts.

Have a blessed weekend!

News from the oncologist…

August 18, 2009 AT 10:10 pm 25 Comments

I wanted to share with you what we found out today at Mom’s appointment.

She definitely has cancer in her stomach and it has spread to her liver. They are 95% sure that it is gastric cancer. They are going to analyze the sample from the biopsy a little more to try to identify it more specifically.

Unfortunately, none of it can be removed surgically.

She will be starting chemotherapy next Thursday.

The doctor said her life expectancy will be about a year depending on how she responds to the chemotherapy.

It wasn’t the news we hoped for.

My heart hurts. And it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

But my God is a God of Hope.

I wish more than anything that each of you could meet my mom, hear her sweet voice, and enjoy the warmth of her hugs. She has walked with Jesus for over 40 years, and continues to face this trial with a heart full of faith and trust in her Lord and Savior.

She actually said tonight at the dinner table that she felt happy. And she means it. She said she just feels so overwhelmed by all the blessings God has given her. She keeps telling me not to look at this cancer as a curse, but as a blessing. So we are keeping our eyes wide open to see what God has in store for us.

And believe it or not, I have received so many blessings in the past week and a half since we found out mom had cancer.

One of them has been all of you that have been praying for us and encouraging me through your comments.

Another blessing has been the chance to just sit with my mom each day and soak up her goodness.

I have never loved her more.

I have never loved my husband and my children more.

I have never loved my life more.

I have never loved my Lord more.

My life will never be the same, and I am grateful.

I don’t want to waste a minute of it.

I want to share the HOPE I have received with others.

I’ve realized that we ALL have struggles and trials that we are going through. Some worse than others, but none of which are less important to God.

I have a college friend whose mother was just diagnosed with liver cancer as well.
She has 3 to 6 months to live. I bought a card for her tonight to send to her.

I want to share it with you. I know that someone reading this post may need to be reminded of this, and I pray this encourages you…

God cares about every detail of your life.

He collects every tear in a bottle. Psalms 56:8

He numbers every hair on your head. Luke 12:7

He knows every hurt in your heart. Psalms 34:18

The Lord Knows

all you are going through.

He loves you, He cares for you,

and He will make sure

not one detail

is overlooked in your life.

The journey my mom has ahead of her will not be easy. I know there will be times that we will feel that we just can’t make it another day. I would have never dreamed we would be dealing with this. But my Hope and Trust is in Jesus, and I know He will be our strength.

I covet your prayers. Pray that Mom would be strong enough to handle the chemo. Pray that the Lord would work a miracle through the medicines and would lengthen her days on earth with us.

Above all, may God be glorified.

God bless you all!

Cafe Shelves

August 16, 2009 AT 10:45 pm 41 Comments

U

If you have been following my blog, you know that I recently made a lot of changes in my house in preparation for a family reunion.

One of the changes I made was putting up cafe-style shelves in my kitchen.

I got the inspiration from my favorite magazine, Ballard Designs.

My husband built a pantry in our kitchen last year and made a countertop space beside it, but I have never decorated the wall above the counter. At first, I thought I wanted to put some cabinets in that space. But when I saw the cafe shelves in Ballards, I knew my husband could make them for me.

(The pantry is on the right of this picture.)

IMG_2871

IMG_2870

This is what the countertop looked like as we worked on projects in the house. LOTS of tools and stuff!

So my husband trimmed out some 1” by 8” ponderosa pine boards.

IMG_2890

I bought 4 corbels at Home Depot. I didn’t like the corbels at Lowe’s. Home Depot has a better selection. I got the smaller size of the style I wanted. They were about 5 bucks a piece.

IMG_2887

We painted them black and then hung them up on the wall.

IMG_2913

IMG_2911

I decorated the shelves with my red Southern Living at Home tidbits and casserole dish.

IMG_2907

I got the silver strainer at Goodwill for $1.50, and the apples and wall plaque from Marshall’s.

IMG_2909

I am so glad I have that spaced filled with colorful things now!

IMG_2912

The cafe shelves in Ballard Designs magazine cost between $99.00 to $139.00 EACH, depending on the size.

I don’t have an exact cost on my shelves because we already had the paint and boards. But I spent about $20.00 on the corbels and my husband spent about $10.00 on the trim. My husband said you could buy the boards for about $6.00 a piece. So this project could be done for less than $50.00, not bad!

Thanks for letting me share my project!

(To my followers…Thank you to all of you who have been praying for my mom. We had a wonderful time together at church tonight. My brother-in-law is a Baptist minister, and we met together tonight to lay hands on my mom and pray for her. She has been feeling pretty good lately, but is still very weak. Tuesday is when we meet with the oncologist to get the results from her biopsy. I will definitely let you know what we find out so you can continue to pray for her. I have been blessed by so many of you during this difficult time. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!)

Love in Him,

Mom’s Biopsy

August 13, 2009 AT 3:59 pm 16 Comments

First of all, I have been overwhelmed by all the love and support I have received from all of you across blogland.

It was my mom who encouraged me to start blogging this past year.

She has celebrated my blog with me every step of the way…my first follower, winning giveaways, and reading lots of comments. We have had a ball.

But I would have never imagined that this blog would end up bringing me such comfort and encouragement during this difficult time. I look forward to checking my blog throughout the day and reading all of your sweet words and prayers.

Today my mom had her biopsy on her liver. All went well. We were a little concerned about her heart handling this procedure, but she did wonderfully.

For anyone who doesn’t know the background, my mom was diagnosed with a heart condition on April 24th of this year. This past summer she has been on several medications and was waiting to have a surgery on her heart this September. Over the summer we have watched her health decline. She had lost almost 25 pounds, couldn’t eat without becoming nauseous and was becoming VERY weak.

My sister finally got her to switch doctors because we knew something wasn’t right. Within 24 hours she was diagnosed with stomach cancer that has spread to her liver.

This past week has been the most difficult of my life. But it has also been the sweetest. I have spent so much time with my mom. Every second has been precious.

My sister and I are taking turns staying with Mom and Dad. Tonight is my turn. I can’t wait. I am treasuring these moments.

Here is a picture of my parents. I thought I would give you some beautiful faces to go with the names, Doug and Wanda.

my pictures 1726

Next Tuesday afternoon, we will be getting the results from the biopsy. We will find out what type of cancer it is , what stage she is in, and what the treatment options are. I am not looking forward to it.

Pray for my sweet husband. He has been playing Mr. Mom a lot lately. And it is not easy taking care of those four boys!

I have to add a picture of my boys. I have this picture in my sidebar, but I wanted to show it to you bigger. This picture was taken one Sunday morning at McDonald’s. I was trying to get a serious picture and it wasn’t easy.

IMG_3053

Then I told them to do a silly pose…

IMG_3054

Oh, my goodness…they make me laugh!

I am hoping to post again soon about some shelves my husband made me a couple of weeks ago.

I have actually had more time to blog than I expected. I spent 5 1/2 hours at the doctor today. My sister and I like to get our laptops out in the waiting room. It helps us to get our minds off things for a while.

Thanks again for all the love I have felt from you these past few days. God bless you for blessing me!

Painting some doors black

August 11, 2009 AT 12:00 am 19 Comments

First of all, I want to thank all you for praying for my mom. She has loved visiting my blog and seeing all of your sweet comments. She feels so covered in prayer and it brings her great comfort.

I am staying at her house tonight. My sister and I are taking turns. We joke that we are doing it more for our dad than for mom. :) He likes knowing someone else is here. And I guess I am doing it for myself as well. I just can’t seem to get enough of her right now!

We are going to the doctor tomorrow to find out some more information about the CAT scan she had on Friday. (The one that told us she had cancer.) My sister and I are going with Mom and Dad just to make sure we ask a lot of questions and help them remember what the doctor says. I feel a little nervous.

Life seems so much more precious to me right now. And the little details of life that used to stress me out, just seem so unimportant.

I am thankful to God for opening my eyes to His blessings that I so quickly rush by each day.

Mom and I have been sitting in the den talking and working on our laptops. She hates that I am unable to blog as much because she knows how much I love it. So, since Mom and I had some time to just hang out, she wanted me to post something.

I am going to share with you some of the doors in my house that I painted black recently in preparation for our family reunion.

The first door leads from our kitchen to our back patio.

Here is the before…

IMG_2610

Pretty boring, huh? Notice the dirty spots under the door knob? That’s after I cleaned it! It takes a lot of wear and tear with four little dirty boys running in and out of it every day!

Here’s the after…

IMG_2917

Sorry about the sun shining in. I didn’t have as good of a picture of the door as I thought I did.

IMG_2918

I love it! And I don’t have to worry about it showing dirt!

Here you can see it through the mirror across the kitchen. It truly is striking.

IMG_2952

And here is a picture from across the kitchen table.

IMG_2949

This picture shows my drop cloth curtains. Can’t wait to share more about those!

IMG_2950

The other door that got painted black in our house was the door from our garage into our kitchen. It was WAY dirtier than the other door. It’s the door that we use the most! It’s also the door that most of our guests come through when visiting. It needed some serious help.

IMG_2614

Okay, that one was painful to share! OMG’sh that’s disgusting. But I live with 5 boys, cut me some slack!

Here’s what the magic of black paint can do…

IMG_3048

IMG_3049

I got the shelf at Goodwill for $5.50 and painted it black. The mirror was from GW for $4.50. The shoe box is my favorite thing in the world. I used to keep it in my den, but it has gotten bumped to the garage since I re-did my den. The boys just throw their shoes in there, and they are out of sight! It’s a great little piece to sit down on and tie your shoes too.

I might get a little vinyl wall saying that says, “Welcome” or something to add to the middle of the door. Still looking for that…

But I love the way they turned out.

As I finish my post, I am looking across the room to see that my sweet mom has fallen asleep in her chair. She feel asleep reading from God’s word. Not surprising at all. She is hopelessly in love with Jesus. Growing up, I remember waking up to the sight of my mom in prayer and bible study. It’s where she has always gotten her strength…and always will. I love you, Mom.

Blessings,

Traci

Please pray for my mom

Ladies,

I just wanted to let you know that I won’t be blogging as much for a while. My mom has been diagnosed with stomach cancer that has spread to her liver. She has a biopsy on Thursday and then we will know more.

She had been having trouble with her heart the past few months, so this diagnosis was completely unexpected.

I had been taking tons of pictures of many projects I had completed for my family reunion I had at my house this past Thursday. I look forward to sharing them with you, but right now my mom is my priority.

I want to spend as much time with her as I possibly can. She is my inspiration.

For any of you who believe in the power of prayer as I do, I beg you to lift my sweet mother up to the throne of God. Pray for her healing.

God bless all of you,
Traci
