Of course, I cannot look back on this year without mentioning the passing of my precious mother in September.

IMG_0457

(This picture was taken a couple of weeks before she passed away.)

My blog took on a whole new meaning during her illness.  You blessed me more than you will ever know with your sweet comments and emails.   I shared many of my thoughts and feelings during that time.  Some of my favorite posts about Mom were…

Liquid Prayers

How beautiful are the feet…

and

There is none better.

“There is none better” is the last post I wrote before Mom passed away.  I had no idea that when I was writing it in the hospital, I was spending my last moments with Mom.  I was brought to tears once more as I read it just now.  But I praise God that I have these moments written down.  Moments I can look back on and treasure all the days of my life.  Moments I wouldn’t have written down if it were not for this blog.  It was my mom who encouraged me to start this blog this year.  Thank you, Mom.

And thank you to ALL of you.  You will never know what you mean to me!  You were a bright spot in many of my darkest days!

I look forward to spending 2010 with you and may God bless you and your loved ones in the year to come!

Wednesday’s with Wanda

December 30, 2009 AT 8:39 am 44 Comments

This post is both personal and priceless to me.

Looking back over this past year, I could have never imagined that it would be my last with my mom. For the most part, my life was on cruise control as a wife, mother, daughter, etc. And then it came to a halt on August 6th, 2009. The day we found out Mom had caner. Life changed drastically.

I spent many hours with Mom at her house and at doctor’s visits. Moments I wouldn’t trade for anything this world has to offer.

But life also changed drastically in my heart. Things that used to be so important to me, just didn’t see important anymore. The things that used to stress me out, didn’t anymore.

What mattered most was my family and my relationship with Jesus Christ.

Mom always knew that. She had spent a lifetime preparing for the day she would be with her Lord.

Throughout my life, I have had the honor of watching that preparation…the hours my mom spent in God’s word. If there is anything I know for sure about my mom, it’s that she loved her Bible. Or should I say Bibles.

IMG_4580

These are just a few of her bibles.

They were in every room of the house, on every bookshelf, and by each bed.

Mom loved to write in her bibles too, and I am so glad she did. Some of the writings are her own thoughts, some are sermon notes, and some are inspirations she gathered from other Christian books she was reading.

I wanted to share with you some of her writings. These writings focus on the importance of reading and studying God’s word. I have no doubt that the peace and grace that I saw in my mom as she faced death was a result of the time she spent in prayer and bible study. They mean so much to me, and I hope they do to you as well.

I will write underneath each picture just in case you cannot read my mom’s writing.

IMG_4620 (God still speaks to us today through His word. When He does speak, the words of the Bible come alive, and glow with a brilliant relevance to our lives. He uses the Scriptures to place truth in our minds, inject truth into our decisions, and impress truth on our hearts. He comforts us and corrects us. Our hearts are captured and stirred by His word.)

IMG_4621 (Read the Scriptures with an expectation that God is going to speak to you. Listen for His voice. Depend on the Holy Spirit to open your ears. Read the Scriptures until His voice sets your heart “ablaze”. Do not be satisfied with checking off the day’s reading assignment—-long to encounter Him in His Word.

IMG_4628 (Read the Bible daily. Although the amount of Scripture read may vary from person to person, the believers who read it daily are better prepared spiritually for the journey ahead. Walter Price)

IMG_4630

(Read the Scripture in the morning. Even if you intend to read more later in the day, do not start your day without the intake of God’s Word.)

IMG_4669

(The Words of God. Oh who could express what they ought to be worth to us! Each word carries with it all the life of God, all His saving power and love. God speaking in His Son. Surely we who know Him will be ready to cast aside everything for the sake of hearing Him!)

IMG_4670 (Wherever you look in Scripture, look to Jesus. Let every passage tell you something of His Father, and His Spirit, and thus Himself. Make it your aim in all your use of the Scriptures to “see and savor more of Christ.” Be on a treasure hunt to satisfy your soul more and more in Him. In this way the Spirit of Christ will be at work to transform you into His image. The aim of the law will be fulfilled more and more in your life. And you will magnify Christ in your life until He comes to complete the work He has begun.)

IMG_4687

(As we read the Bible it begins to form us and mold us until we become to look like Jesus Christ.)IMG_4690

(The hope for America is to come back to the Bible!) Amen!

I also wanted to share some of Mom’s writings that seem even more poignant since she passed away.

IMG_4684

(We have no control over how we die or when, but we do have control over how we live. Our hope is in the Lord! We must live for Him and Him alone!) IMG_4691

(I only have one life to live and I want to live a life of obedience to God. John 14:23 “If anyone loves me he will keep my Word and I and my father will come and live with you.”)

IMG_4586

(Psalm 27:4 One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in His temple. Psalm 27:8 When thou saidst, Seek ye my face, my heart said unto thee, Thy face, Lord, will I seek.)

IMG_4600

(Philippians 1:21 For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.)

IMG_4613

(Everything that happens to us is for a reason. When trouble comes we should not say, “How can I get out of this,” but rather—“What can I get out of this.”)

********************************

My desire for this coming new year is to spend more time reading and studying God’s word.

I used to spend time in His word every morning until I had kids. I would tell myself that I was just too tired to get up so early…I just couldn’t do it, and I’m sure God would understand.

But can I make a confession? I have woken up excitedly in the wee hours of the morning and even in the middle of the night to get on my laptop to see if someone had left a comment on my blog. I wasn’t too tired to do that!

No offense, but the living Word of God is so much more important than the comments left on my blog. The Bible is FULL of comments from God to me (and you).

I want to be excited about hearing from God through His scriptures. I may not be too excited those first few mornings that I start getting up early again. But through obedience, God will deepen my desire to seek after Him, and He will bless me.

That is my prayer.

Thank you for letting me share the thoughts beneath my heart,

Christmas Wrap Up

December 29, 2009 AT 2:05 pm 19 Comments

The Tip Junkie is giving us one last chance to share anything related to Christmas that we haven’t shared yet.

I didn’t get to post pictures of the very little bit of Christmas decorating I did in our guest house.

So I would like to share it now.

I love these stackable Christmas boxes that were my mom’s (given to her by her sister, Nancy). I knew they would look perfect in our guest house.

IMG_4935

They tell the Christmas story…

IMG_4936

And they looks so cute next to my burlap chair. You can see the post about how I made an old Goodwill chair into a burlap beauty HERE.

IMG_4934

I put my Willow Tree Nativity on the buffet table in the guest house.

IMG_4940

I bought the frame at Goodwill for $1.50. It was that ugly gold, so I painted it black and sanded it down, and covered the inside with burlap. I did this project earlier this summer, but I thought it would be perfect behind my Nativity.

IMG_4946

The star is an ornament I got half off at Kohl’s. I think I paid $2.50 for it. It goes perfectly with this Nativity set.

IMG_4938

See the little angel under the tree? My sweet Mother-in-law gave it to me for Christmas. It’s called the Angel of Remembrance, and she gave it to me in honor of my precious Mother who passed away this past September.

IMG_4956

I will treasure it forever!

IMG_4943

I love that the angel is holding three branches. For me, it symbolizes my Mom watching over her three children, me, Cyndi, and Blake.

*************************************

Another thing I wanted to share about Christmas is my handmade ornaments. I usually make them every year to sell at craft shows, but this year I wasn’t able to.

My mom and her sister, Nancy, are the ones who started making these over 15 years ago. I loved them so much and started making them too.

Here are some examples of ones that I have made over the years.

IMG_4499

This is one of my favorites. He’s one of the oldest…he has a chip on his ear and a missing foot, but I still love him! Sort of like the Velveteen Rabbit. I love the little gingerbread man he is holding too.

IMG_4500

IMG_4504

I made these snowmen on a sleigh before my fourth son was born. I just love these little guys!

IMG_4505

IMG_4508

IMG_4510

IMG_4512

And this guy is my all-time favorite, my Woodland Santa. He has a gingerbread tucked in his pocket too.

IMG_4517

Well, that’s it. My last little bit of Christmas to share with you. Thank you for sharing all of your wonderful Christmas decorating and traditions with me as well. I look forward to spending another Christmas with you next year!

Another Fun Tile Creation!

December 27, 2009 AT 11:22 pm 36 Comments

Hello, all!

I wanted to share with you a quick little something I made that I absolutely love.

IMG_4832

It’s another cute little tile!

I showed you how to make coasters from tiles a while back ago.

IMG_4110

You can read about those HERE.

Well, I saw on another blog how to make coasters with tiles using rubber stamps instead of decoupage.

It looked so simple that I went to Lowe’s and bought some more tiles. And since I didn’t need any more coasters, I decided to make something else.

I used a black StazOn ink pad that I got half off at Hobby Lobby and a stamp that I have had for years in a closet. The StazOn ink is permanent and will not smear or come off . (Great for coasters.)

IMG_4922

I stamped it in the middle of the tile and hot glued a little gingham bow to the top.

IMG_4460

IMG_4461

This little tile would be cute anywhere! You could hang it on a wall or sit in on a desk or dresser.

I decided to add something to the back so it could be hung on the wall.

I got my favorite material, burlap, and cut a square piece a little smaller than the tile.

IMG_4734

I hot glued the burlap square to the back of the tile.

IMG_4740

Then I used some jute string to make a “hanger” on the back. I hot glued the string in place.

IMG_4736

To give it more of a “finished” look, I used some little decorative buttons I had left over from another project.

IMG_4737

I hot glued the buttons over the ends of the jute string.

IMG_4739

And now it is ready to hang!

But for now, I have enjoyed displaying it on my buffet table with my Christmas decorations.

IMG_4834

I love black and white gingham. And this little tile matches my GW topiaries with gingham bows (that I added) in my hutch.

IMG_4484

IMG_4524

This project was so easy to do, and I am brainstorming some more little projects with tiles. I would like to use some bigger tiles next time. Wouldn’t they be cute monogrammed? Hmmm….

I am linking this post to all of my favorite parties throughout the week. If you need some inspiration, just check these out….

Funny Story

December 26, 2009 AT 8:01 pm 39 Comments

(I had to document this story for my sons to read someday when they are older.)

On the morning of Christmas Eve’s Eve (Wednesday), I decided to take the boys to Wal-Mart to spend some of their Christmas money they had received.

Of course, I had a ton of stuff I needed to get done at home…baking, wrapping, cleaning, etc.  But that’s not very easy to do with four boys running around the house.

So I decided to focus on the boys, let the other stuff go, and enjoy the day with them.

We headed off to Wal-Mart and spent an hour in the toy section trying to get the most bang for their bucks.  I was proud of myself for being so patient with them, and we really did have fun.

When we left Wal-Mart, the boys began to beg me to go get something to eat.  I didn’t have much money, so I said we could go to Wendy’s and eat off the “value” menu.  They agreed and off we went.

We shared some burgers and fries as we sat around a big table and talked excitedly about Christmas and Santa’s approaching visit.

I was filled with joy as I looked around the table at the four precious lives that God has blessed me with.

My oldest son, Jonathan, said, “We’ve had a good morning Mom, haven’t we?”  Of course I agreed.

He placed his hand on my shoulder and lovingly rubbed my back and said…“You have spent the whole morning doing stuff for us Mom…(then he smiled so sweetly)…let’s do something for you now.”

I looked back at him and smiled, then he said…

“Let’s go to Goodwill!”

I laughed out loud!

Not Macy’s, not the mall, not a great boutique…but Goodwill!

He knows his momma well!  I actually agreed that it was a great idea, and we went there after lunch.

It ended up being a great trip, and I found some real goodies.

I found three DVDs that looked brand new for $2.50 a piece.  I thought they would be great little extra gifts for the boys at Christmas.  (I didn’t let them see me buy them.)

 IMG_4814

Then I found this adorable little Lowe’s apron for $1.00 that looked brand new too.  I got it for my 2 year old for Christmas to go with the tools he was getting from Santa.

IMG_4816

He wore it all morning on Christmas day.

IMG_4896

Also at the GW,  I found this adorable little white soup tureen for $1.50…Merry Christmas to me!

IMG_4920

I had to buy this little Christmas tree for the boys’ room.  It was only $3.00.  I had been promising to get one for their room for a couple of years now, so I thought this would work.  IMG_4836

They loved it!  Next year, we might put white lights on it with some sports ornaments or something.

Lastly, I found this adorable red tin basket with greenery in it for $2.00.  I knew I could use it somewhere.

IMG_4817

I played with it for while, putting different decorations in it…

IMG_4821

IMG_4822

This is my woodland Santa ornament that I made many years ago.  Hopefully I will be able to make some more of him, and he will be for sale in my Etsy shop next year.

IMG_4828

But my new “find” ended up under my kitchen cabinets on a black tray with faux snow…

IMG_4917

I love the contrasting colors.

See why I love going to Goodwill?  My boys love it too.  They are probably going to kill me one day when they realize that not everyone thinks it’s cool to shop at Goodwill.

But for now…they think I am the coolest Mom ever, especially when I let them pick out a 50 cent toy at Goodwill!

Ahhh….good times…good times….

Have a blessed day!

Wednesdays with Wanda

December 23, 2009 AT 8:30 am 21 Comments

I go to a church that has a wonderful women’s ministry. Every year they have a Christmas fellowship for the women of the church. Last year, Mom went with me and we had a wonderful time together. I was always so proud to introduce Mom to others, and she loved meeting and fellowshipping with other Christian women.

This year they had another Christmas party planned, and I knew I could not go by myself. I knew I would be flooded with memories of my mom and I sitting together in the sanctuary. I almost didn’t go at all.

But my sweet sister said she would go with me, and I am so glad she did. We had a wonderful time together. What would I do without her?

The theme for the night was “The Peace of Christmas”.

We ate all the goodies that each of us brought and then gathered in the sanctuary to focus on the true meaning of Christmas. Our women’s ministry leader, Judy, opened the service with this verse…

“My peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you, not as the world gives do I give to you, let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be afraid.” John 14:27

Of ALL the verses in the bible, I couldn’t believe this was the one I was hearing! That verse had been Mom’s “life verse”, and it was definitely the verse that she clung to during her death. I have never known a peace like I saw in my mom’s life as she faced death. It’s a peace that I long for and pray for each day.

As I heard Judy read that verse, I almost smiled. If was as if I could hear Mom saying, “Traci, are you listening? Don’t be afraid, sweetie, don’t be troubled, God is with you. Trust Him.”

And I felt His peace wash over me as I was reminded that He will take care of me.

Our women’s ministry also creates a Devotional Guide for Women that includes a collection of devotionals to help prepare our hearts for Christmas. It is written by the ladies of our church, and I love reading it each year.

This year, Judy asked me to write one of the devotionals for the book, and I said “yes”.

Of course I wrote it about my mom, and I wanted to share it with you. It was titled…

A Midnight Clear Moment

“And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them…” Luke 2:8,9

Have you ever thought about what it would have been like to be a shepherd on that clear moonlit night? It was a night like any other night. The shepherds were tending to their sheep as usual.

Then something sudden and unexpected happened. Angels appeared announcing the good news of Christ’s birth. Not only were the shepherd terrified; they probably were confused too. They may have wondered why God chose to reveal his amazing plan to them. Shouldn’t He have chosen a group of people more important and influential? It just didn’t make sense.

But then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people.” The shepherds didn’t need to fear this unexpected news, for it would result in great joy for all people. They heard the good news, trusted God, and traveled to Bethlehem to experience something far greater than they could have ever imagined….the birth of Jesus!

Our lives can be a lot like that of the shepherds. We go about our daily routines doing what we always do, when something totally unexpected happens. And a lot of times it just doesn’t make sense. That’s how I felt when I found out my mom had terminal cancer. Just like the shepherds, I was terrified. Have you ever been there?

But during her illness, Mom told me something that I will never forget. She said, “I may not understand God, but I trust Him.” She was not afraid of dying because she knew the “good news of great joy that will be for all people.” She knew that because of Jesus she would have life everlasting, and she was able to experience a “peace that passes all understanding” even in the darkest of nights.

Dear Jesus, when things happen to us that we don’t expect or understand, I pray that you would help us to trust you—knowing that you will bless our lives in ways that we could never have imagined. Thank you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

**************************************

To all of my sweet blogging friends, if something unexpected or difficult has come into your life, I pray that you would know that God loves you, He knows what you are going through, and you can trust Him.

Have a blessed day,

White Chocolate Popcorn with M&M’s

December 17, 2009 AT 7:11 pm 32 Comments

I wanted to share with you a simple and delicious Christmas treat that is easy to make and fun to share.

IMG_4442

Some people call it “snow”, but I call it “popcorn drizzled with white chocolate and some m&m;’s on top”.

Mom said someone brought it to her at work last Christmas and she didn’t eat it right away because she thought it was just popcorn. But when she finally took a bite and tasted the delicious white chocolate, she said she didn’t stop until she ate the whole bag! Then she called me on the phone and said, “Traci, you’ve got to make this!” So, I did.

I agreed that it was dee-li-cious!

Here are the ingredients:

2 bags of natural popcorn (no butter)

1 bag of white chocolate chips

1 bag of Christmas (green and red) M&M;’s

IMG_4419

Step 1: Pop two bags of popcorn.

Step 2: Cover your work space with wax paper and lay the popcorn in a single layer. (I made this step up. I didn’t like mixing it in a bowl.)

IMG_4422

Step 3: Melt chocolate chips in the microwave. (Follow directions on bag.)

IMG_4421

IMG_4424

Step 4: Lick spoon to make sure the chocolate tastes good. This is a very important step!

Step 5: Drizzle the melted chocolate over the popcorn. I just use my spoon for this step.

IMG_4425

Can you say, “Oh my goodness?!”

IMG_4430

Step 6: Let the melted chocolate cool and harden.

Step 7: Add the M&M;’s and toss!

IMG_4432

Ooo-la-la!

Step 8: Bag it!

IMG_4441

IMG_4440

I got those cute Santa bags on clearance last year.

Step 9: Tie them up and add a tag.

IMG_4743

Step 10: Share it!

These make great gifts for teachers, neighbors, or your church family.

This recipe makes about 6 or 7 bags. And it cost me about $6.oo to make. Last year I made them for my sons’ PE and music teachers, librarian, office staff, and custodians. I think they enjoy being recognized too, even if it is with something little.

If you wanted to make this for a Christmas party, or just for you and your kids to munch on one night while watching Christmas movies, you can just put it all in a big, cute, Christmas bowl and let everyone dig in! Kids really love this! Who am I kiddin’? Adults love it too!

Give it a try and let me know what you think!

Linking this recipe to my sister’s Christmas Recipe Linky Party!

Blessings,
