Wall Decor

February 27, 2010 AT 9:25 am 7 Comments

As you know, my office has been giving me decorating “fits” for the past few weeks.

I think I have finally made a window treatment I can live with, and I have finished accessorizing for the most part.

So in the spirit of decorating, I thought I would show you some beautiful ideas for wall decor from two of my sponsors, Red Letter Words and Leen, The Graphic Queen.

First, I want to share with you some more of Dee’s beautiful wall art from Red Letter Words.

These prints display one of my favorite scriptures, Jeremiah 29:11,12.  What a wonderful reminder to see on your wall each day!

Wouldn’t these look good in my black and white office?…212_360

And I couldn’t resist sharing a little “pink lovely” with you.  I think this would be adorable hanging in a little girl’s room…

Third time’s a charm!

Oops. I did it again!

I made another window treatment for my office.

IMG_5703

If you are keeping count, which I am trying not to, that’s window treatment #3 in just a couple of months.

Yes. I am bordering on completely insane.

But I am very pleased with the results, and I am announcing here in front of everyone, “I will not make another window treatment for this office for at least a year. I promise.”

My office is the smallest room in my house, yet it has given me the biggest headache!

I just couldn’t get the look I was after, but I am as close as I am gonna get.

I. am. done.

Here’s where my office began…shortly after Christmas…

IMG_5145

Yikes!

It took a couple of weeks to “decrapify” (as TDC says) my office.

Then I made this Roman Shade using my faux wood blinds, and I got this…

IMG_5195

Double Yikes! Not liking it at all. Especially with my yellow walls that I hadn’t painted yet.

So I painted the walls my favorite color, Khaki Shade by Sherwin Williams and made another window treatment (#2).

Tutorial HERE.

IMG_5541

Better, but I wasn’t liking the ribbons. Don’t know why. They just weren’t jivin’ with me. Too cutesy? Too girly?

I was trying to accessorize the rest of the office, but I could not get pass the window treatments. They were just plain buggin’ me.

So I used a similar procedure and made one more window treatment with some black material from Hobby Lobby. (#3)

IMG_5698

Phew! This is more what I was after!

I am still playing with the accessories. I need a lamp shade, but not sure what style to get. The lamp was my mom’s. It was a cream color and I spray painted it white.

I think I like the “blessings” sign over the window. Is it too much? Do you think it would look better without it? Be honest. I am a big girl….I can take it. :)

I have to use a flash when taking pictures of my office because without it, it looks like this…

IMG_5669

Does anyone know if there is a setting on a camera that reduces the glare of a window without using the flash?

Anyway, I have finally finished accessorizing my shelves. I am not moving another thing! Did I say I am done with this room? Done.

All of my accessories are things I had around the house.

I have had the two flower prints for a few years. My mom printed them off the internet for me, and I put them in black frames. Instant artwork.

IMG_5671

I couldn’t find anything to put on the first shelf. So I stuck these empty frames up there, and I kind of liked it.

Then I kept layering them with the little tile that I made a couple of months ago, and a little stick ball thingy that was Mom’s.

IMG_5672

I LOVE my burlap covered books. I knew I was going to use them in my office. They were so easy to make. You can read about them HERE.

The little bird was my mom’s. Love it.

IMG_5674

More of my burlap books, mom’s little white vase, and her red “blessings” tin…

IMG_5677

I hung my burlap board on this wall. You can learn how to make one yourself by watching my first video tutorial. (Or buy one from my Etsy shop.)

I got the white basket from Goodwill last summer. It was $1.50 and an ugly green color. I spray painted it white. Easy.

IMG_5688

The plate holder on the wall was my mom’s. I put a white plate in it for now. I am going to get a smaller white plate with maybe a monogram?

IMG_5711

I love the little horse and carriage silhouette I found at Goodwill for 50 cents. I just fell in love with it. I am contemplating painting the frame black, what do you think? (Yes, it’s hung with a push pin right now…see it?)

IMG_5693

Two last things I want to do in here:

1) Cute little chandelier.

2) A chair I can re-do. I would love to find an old ugly dining room chair at Goodwill and turn it into this….

of course in white…

tour1bam-sunroom425

Well, that’s it. I’m D-O-N-E.

Is there a room in your house that has given you decorating nightmares too?

Sure-to-please Potluck Dishes {Wednesdays with Wanda}

February 24, 2010 AT 6:57 am 24 Comments

No tears this week, I promise.

Last week, I wrote about Mom and Dad’s anniversary which made a lot of us cry, especially me.  But I am so thankful that I have this blog to document their love.  I can’t wait for my boys to read it when they are older, so they can see the value of a committed marriage.

I LOVED reading all of your comments.  You have no idea how much they mean to me.  Many of you have parents with similar love stories and anniversaries.  It was beautiful to read.

Thank You.

I have said before that Mom used to write for our local town newspaper about 20 years ago.

I remember her working on her recipes at home.  She was so cute!

Each week she would be “stressing” over what recipes to include in her article.  Many times we were her “guinea pigs” trying out her recipes.

At first, her column in the paper just included the recipes.  But then she suggested to the editor that they add pictures to her column.  The editor agreed, and then Mom became a “food photographer” as well.

Many times I remember her taking pictures of our food on our plates before we began eating.   Hmmmm…..that sounds a little like us bloggers, doesn’t it?

I remember her setting up the table for each picture.  If it was around a holiday, she would add decorations to go with the theme.

Sometimes her pictures would include members of our family, or a friend from work, or props from around our house.

The picture for today’s column that I am sharing with you makes me smile.

That is our kitchen counter, Mom’s black purse, and her cute little keys.  Precious.

The note she wrote says, “Potluck supper at the Gillum’s tonight! 7:30”

Doris Gillum was Mom’s life-long best friend.  She loved Doris.  She used to tell us stories of funny things they would do together as young wives and mothers.  They were best  friends for over 40 years! God truly blessed them with a very special friendship.

Instead of writing out Mom’s article, I decided to scan it.  I think it is more fun to actually see the article.

I love all of these recipes, especially the hash brown casserole.  It is soooo delicious.  I make this for every church potluck or family gathering that I go to.  Except instead of using the bag of hash brown potatoes and a large onion, I use the Ore Ida Potatoes O’Brien which has red and green peppers already mixed in it.  Delish!  I also like to sprinkle buttered corn flakes on top of my casserole for some extra “crunch”.

I hope you enjoy these recipes!

Candle Makeover

February 22, 2010 AT 6:43 am 40 Comments

I spent the weekend on several projects, but unfortunately none of them turned out quite the way I had hoped.

So I will be tweaking them this week and hopefully sharing them with you soon.

In the meantime, I will share with you a fun little project I tried last week.

I got my inspiration from a magazine I was flipping through at a bookstore.

It was a picture of a grouping of candles covered in sheet music.

I went off to Hobby Lobby to buy some candles and scrapbook paper.

I was hoping to find some sheet music scrapbook paper, but they didn’t have any.

So I chose a paper that looked like script writing.

IMG_5579

I also got some brown ribbon, but ended up not using it.

First, I covered the back of the paper with ModPodge.

IMG_5582

Then I wrapped the paper around the candle and trimmed the excess. When it was mostly dry, I added another layer of Mod Podge on top of the paper.

IMG_5584

Then to give it more of an “aged” look, I added a layer of Valspar Mocha Glaze with a paper towel.

IMG_5644

I had three candles. One tall one, and two medium ones.

IMG_5591

I wanted them to all be different sizes, so I cut the bottom off of one of them with my electric knife.

Yup. I did.

IMG_5602

That little electric knife was “going to town” but was having trouble cutting all the way through the candle.

So I had to get out the “big dog” and finish it up.

IMG_5603

Oh….the crafty wisdom I share on this blog!

Okay. Maybe not the best method. But I got the result I wanted. I stuck them in the wooden fruit stand I made last week to see what they would look like.

IMG_5614

The candles in my inspiration picture from the magazine had cute little ribbons hanging from them.

I tried several different ribbons, but couldn’t get the look I was after.

So a resorted to my old friend, Mr. Burlap.

I thought I took a picture of the next step, but I couldn’t find it.

I took my tan burlap and spray painted it black. I’ve never tried this before, so I was feeling rather brilliant for coming up with the idea.

I love burlap. I love black. I love black burlap!

Then I cut a strip of the burlap and wrapped it around my candles.

IMG_5620

But it needed something more.

So I took the “Spare Parts” that I had left over from my Magnet Board tutorial, and added a little bling.

image

IMG_5605

I think I like it better with the bling.

IMG_5627

I am not totally blown away with the results, but I am blown away with how easy it was to do.

I started thinking about how cute it would be to wrap candles in a damask print or an animal print. There are so many different types of scrapbooking paper that you could find something to match the decor in any room in your house. You could embellish the candles with just about anything…monograms, jute string, ribbons, charms, etc.

Let me know if you try this and send me some pictures. I know you ladies will come up with some beautiful ideas!

It was fate, I tell ya!

February 18, 2010 AT 10:40 pm 21 Comments

(This is a true story.)

I have to tell you something I did.

I have been visiting other blogs looking for potential sponsors for my blog.

Several weeks ago, I clicked on a “Pocket full of Posies” button on another blog.

button2

It was fate.  Nothing but fate.

Let me explain.

One day earlier, I was frustrated (again) about what to cook for dinner.  I yelled at  nicely said to my husband, “I just wish someone would tell me WHAT to cook, and WHAT TO BUY so I can cook it.”

Confession:  I love to spend time fixing up my house, not fixing supper.

I just think it’s boring figuring out what meals to fix and what ingredients to buy to prepare them.  I’m sorry.  It’s true.

So imagine my excitement when I read:

ournewpic-1

Welcome to Pocket Full of Posies! We are so excited that you have found us, and even more excited to share our ideas. If you are a busy mom, looking for a quick and easy solution to your meal planning problems, you’ve come to the right place. Perfect Pocket Meal Planning will change your life in the kitchen! We’ve done all the work, all you have to do is the cooking!

Change my life?!   Are you kidding me?  I’m in!

I began reading about their Perfect Pocket Meal Planning, and I was hooked.

This is basically what it is…

IMG_5367

They have prepared 8 weeks of recipes to store in their cute little pocket planners…

IMG_5370

You pick out  four weeks of recipes that you want to make for the month.  Here are my recipes in my  new pocket planner…

IMG_5373

Each week has an “ingredient card” with everything you need to buy to make the meals.

IMG_5368

Now you are ready to cook for the week!

So basically,  someone is telling me WHAT to cook and WHAT TO BUY so I can cook it!!

See.   FATE.

So I emailed these two precious sister-in-laws and begged them to let me try their Perfect Pocket Meal Planning system.

We decided on a trade…they get an advertising spot on my blog and I get one of their Perfect Pocket Meal Planning systems.

Score!

See why I love blogging?!

I took my little ingredient card with me to Krogers, got what I needed, and headed home “happy as a lark”!

(What does that saying really mean?  Are lark’s happy?  Someone please let me know…)

And now my boys are happy too!

Here are a couple of pictures of them enjoying the meals that their very organized and prepared Mommy fixed them.

IMG_5386

IMG_5564

“Yeah!  Our Mom is the best cook ever!”  They said that.  Seriously.

Well, there you have it… it has changed my life!

There are several other ways to incorporate their meal planning system into your life.  They also have Diet Meal Packages and Specialty Meal Packages.

So click their button to go check it out…you’ll be glad you did!

Wooden Fruit Stand

February 18, 2010 AT 6:56 am 60 Comments

Last month I found a cute little wooden fruit stand at Goodwill.

IMG_5588

I guess it’s a fruit stand? I’m sure it could hold many other things as well.

My eye was immediately drawn to it because of it’s shape. I loved all of the curves all over it. Very cottage-y.

IMG_5586

I wasn’t crazy about the dark wood color, but knew that it would look great painted white.

And it was only $3.50! I knew I would use it somewhere…if not in my house, then in our guest house.

When you are shopping for items at Goodwill, look at the shape or outline of an item. If it is an ugly color or has an ugly picture on it, don’t let that stop you from buying it. Paint covers a multitude of ugliness!

I tried something a little different on this piece. I rubbed all of the edges that I would be sanding with candle wax before I primed it.

Why? Because sometimes I have trouble sanding off the primer to get down to the wood. It frustrates the heck out of me!

I saw somewhere in blogland that someone used candlewax on the edges before painting. So I thought I would give it a try!

After I rubbed all the edges with my candle, I used a spray primer to prime it.

Then I painted the whole thing white. I used Krylon Satin white spray paint from Walmart.

IMG_5598

I had to paint it in the garage and then bring it inside to dry. I cannot wait for warmer weather so I can do more painting outside!

Then I used my sanding sponge to sand all of the edges. I think the candle wax worked! The paint just sanded right off!

IMG_5599

IMG_5600

Ooooh, I loved how it was turning out!

Then for the final step, I applied a layer of Valspar Mocha Glaze to give it a little more of a vintage look.

IMG_5644

I got this bottle at Lowe’s forever ago, and I have done a million projects with it. It lasts for-e-va!

I applied the glaze with a paper towel, and wiped it on and off until I got the look I was after. It’s a subtle difference, but I love how it turned out!

IMG_5601

Then I just put some of my artificial apples I got from Marshall’s in it, and I was finished!

I love it!

Now for a parade of pictures of my little beauty…

IMG_5631 IMG_5633IMG_5632

IMG_5635 IMG_5637

IMG_5639

IMG_5640

Well, that’s all!

A very easy project, but I am so happy with the way it turned out.

Here is a sneak peek of a project I’ll share with you next week…<

Have a blessed day!

Wednesdays with Wanda (A Love Story)

February 17, 2010 AT 7:37 am 57 Comments

This Friday, February 19th, would have been Mom and Dad’s 45th wedding anniversary.

45 Years. Wow!

It’s a rare thing nowadays to see a marriage last that long. But what a beautiful sight to see when you do!

My dad met my mom on a blind date in October of 1964.

He loves talking about that night. He has always said, “It was love at first sight.” He recalls her opening the door, and how he thought she was a knock out! There is always a big smile on his face when he thinks about that night.

He told me this week, that on their first date they went to see the movie “Ten Commandments”. After the movie, they went and got a bite to eat at the Parkette Drive-in. It’s the kind of place where you sit in your car to order the food, and the waitress rolls up to your car window on her roller skates.

She told him that night that she didn’t like bald-headed men. That made me laugh out loud! At the time, Dad had a head full of hair, but not for very long…

Dad says she learned to love bald-headed men. :)

(mom’s engagement picture)

They fell in love fast and hard and were married 4 months later, February 19, 1965.

Together they raised 3 children, my sister, me, and my brother. They worked hard to provide us with the things we needed. Growing up, we were involved in a ton of activities…dance, baseball, basketball, cheerleading, piano, golf, swim team, color guard, band, gymnastics, track, girl scouts, boys scouts, youth group, Sunday School, and on and on…. I don’t know how they did it!

But as dad told me tonight, “Our kids were our life.”

I know it wasn’t always easy, but they stuck together through it all.

I asked my dad how they made it through the bad times in their marriage, and he said, “There weren’t really “bad” times in our marriage, just stressful times.” He explained how the circumstances in their lives would sometimes cause stress in their marriage. But they never gave up and never gave in. They were committed to each other through the good and the bad.

After all of us kids were finally out of the house, there was more time for Mom and Dad to spend together. They enjoyed going to “dinner theaters” together and church activities. Of course their favorite thing to do together was to invite all of their children and grandchildren over!

I asked Dad what he loved most about Mom and this is what he said, (in broken sentences and with a lump in his throat)…

“her faithfulness to God…she lived it 24/7… her forgiving heart …the way she loved people…. the way she loved me. I can’t say nothin’ bad about that woman.”

And I left it at that. I knew he would start to cry if I asked for more.

Dad loved Mom with all of his heart. And she adored him too.

When Mom found out she had cancer, their love was more evident than ever.

One day, I was at the house with Mom and Dad getting ready for lunch. She had just been recently diagnosed, and Mom’s legs were not as swollen as they were in the end. She was able to get around much easier. She was in the kitchen fixing her and Dad something for lunch. I was sitting at the kitchen table looking at magazines.

Dad walked into the kitchen with a CD player. He plugged it in and began to play their favorite CD. It was a CD by a gospel group called, Ernie Haus and Signature Sound. They had performed at Mom and Dad’s church, and they just loved them. Mom actually wrote a post about it on her blog. You can read about it HERE.

Dad played one song, and then forwarded it to their “favorite song” on the album. Then Dad took Mom by the hand and they begin to slowly dance. Mom’s arms were around his neck and his arms around her waist. Their feet never moved as they swayed back and forth.

It was as if time stood still. I have never felt a love so strong. It was as if they were trying to drink each other up. Dad began to cry. I know he didn’t want to ever let go. They both knew that her diagnosis was serious and that their time together may be coming to an end.

In my 39 years of being their daughter, I have never seen anything so beautiful.

Their love was special. Their love was true.

I watched Dad as he cared for Mom day in and day out. He brought her food, fluffed her pillows, held her hand, brushed her hair, and prayed for her every day. He adored her.

And Dad was right beside her, still loving on her, those final hours she had here on earth. Mom was on a lot of pain medicine and was not completely coherent, but when Dad would lean down beside her bed and talk to her, you could see her trying to open her eyes and move her mouth. She was hearing the voice of the man she had loved for 44 years.

I remember Dad saying to her before she passed away, “You’re my girl, Wanda. I’ve always loved you. I fell in love with you the first time I saw you.”

Their love was beautiful.

I know this post will be hard for my dad to read. It was hard for me to write.

But I wanted to write it for him. To honor their marriage and their love.

Dad also told me this week that their favorite singer when they first got married was Jim Reeves. I found one of his songs that I think is perfect for them and made a video.

http://www.youtube.com/get_player

Dad,
God blessed you with an amazing woman and an amazing marriage. He gave you 44 wonderful years together here on this earth. And what a comfort to know that you will spend an infinite number of years with her someday in heaven. I love you. Traci

My first video tutorial

February 15, 2010 AT 6:06 pm 76 Comments

I just posted a tutorial on how to make my magnet boards earlier today.  I had hoped to post my video, but couldn’t get it to work.

Making this video and trying to post it has definitely been a learning experience!

I tried to upload it 4 or 5 times but nothing worked.

I finally tried to upload a different copy of the video, and it worked!  Unfortunately, this video wasn’t the one I wanted to post.  I had better music on the other one, but oh well!  What do you do?

I hope and pray that you will still keep following me after you watch this.  Promise me that you won’t think I’m a weird-o, okay?

Pinky promise?

(You may want to hit pause and let the video fully load before playing.)

Nervously awaiting your approval…

Magnet Board Tutorial

February 15, 2010 AT 3:28 pm 33 Comments

(Updated: If you would like to see the video tutorial of this same project, click HERE.)

Hello, ladies!

I am a little disappointed about my post today. I worked all day Saturday on creating a video to show you how to make my Ballard Designs inspired magnet board. Then I spent several hours yesterday and this morning trying to upload it, and I couldn’t get it to work! UGH!

I had a lot of fun making the video and was excited to share it with you. However, it’s not going to happen today. If for some reason, I figure out how to make it work, I might post it later.

Here is my inspiration:

IMG_2692

I love these magnet boards from Ballard Designs. But they are $39 a piece! I immediately said, “I can make that!” And for a lot less!

So I found a 12×18 sheet of aluminum at Lowe’s for $4.66.

It is a very thin piece of metal, so I decided to “thicken” it up a bit by adding cork board to the back. I had found these squares of cork at Goodwill for 50 cents each. They are about a centimeter thick, and can be purchased at most craft stores, maybe even at Walmart.

IMG_2672

Lowe’s had two types of 12×18 sheets of metal. One was more expensive than the one I purchased, so I took a picture of the exact one you want to buy…

IMG_2675

Then I cut the cork board into two inch wide strips and hot glued it down the sides of the magnet board. You could cover the entire back of the board with cork, but I was trying to save the cork board I had for other projects.

IMG_2676

It will look like this when you are finished gluing the cork down…

IMG_2677

Lay the board on the material you want to use. I am using leftover drop cloth material for this one.

IMG_2679

Fold the material over the edges and hot glue in down.

IMG_2680

Fold over the corners and hot glue them down. Don’t worry if they do not lay down perfectly, it’s on the back and no one will ever see it! :)

IMG_2681

Add some ribbon by hot gluing it down in the middle and cutting the ends.

IMG_2684

Hot glue your ribbon to the back of the board…

IMG_2685

You can leave the back like this, or you can cover the back with material. I cover the back with material for the ones I sell in my Etsy shop because it gives more of a finished look.

IMG_2686

IMG_2687

To make some custom magnets, I picked up this package of “Spare parts” at Hobby Lobby for half off. ($2.50) The round magnets were two dollars, I think. Then I just hot glued the “spare parts” onto my magnets, and that was it!

1204256640

They are so cute on my burlap magnet board.

Untitled 0 00 16-13

FYI: If you cover your metal board with burlap, be sure to spray paint the front of the metal with white or off white paint. This keeps the metal from “shinning” through the burlap. (I know this from experience.) :)

Untitled 0 00 26-20

Here is another board I made for my Etsy shop. I’ve been dying to make one with some pink on it. I think these would be so cute in a little girl’s room. I chose a brown material with pink polk-a-dots and a pink ribbon. (The back is covered in the same material.)

Untitled 0 00 23-19

Untitled 0 00 06-20

That’s it! These are super easy to do, and I know all you crafty ladies out there could make some fabulous ones. You can use any color of material and ribbon to match your own home decor.

Let me know if you try this!

And if you don’t want to make it yourself, I can make it for you.

They are for sale in my Etsy shop. You can visit it by clicking on the button in my side bar.

If you have any questions, just let me know!
