I hope you all had a wonderful Mother’s Day weekend.
I enjoyed spending it with my family and visiting Mom’s grave, and I will share more about that day with you on Wednesday.
This time of year is so hectic for our family. We have ballgames almost every night of the week, and it seems like a million things are going on at school right now!
I started cleaning out our very messy garage over the weekend, but that’s not something very exciting to share on my blog. :)
So I decided to share with you one of the very first projects I completed last year. I still enjoy looking at it, so I hope you will too!
I had been looking for a little stool that I could paint white and add a burlap seat cover.
This one was perfect! And it was only $3.50 at Goodwill!
It was in great shape. Very sturdy. Just needed a little TLC.
So I took off the seat cover (it wasn’t screwed on), and covered it with some batting to make it a little fuller and softer. I always feel like I am wrapping a present when I do this part. The best part is the present is for ME!
Then I covered the batting with inexpensive burlap using the same steps.
For painting the stool, I just used a can of white spray paint because I already had it on hand. I took my time trying to spray evenly to avoid drips. Then I let it dry.

Next, I used some light sand paper and “roughed up” the edges.
Then I used Valspar mocha glaze over the white paint.
I have absolutely NO idea what the correct steps to glazing are, but this is what I did, and I liked the results.
I applied the glaze with large sponge brush. Then I wiped it right off with paper towels. I worked on one side of the stool at a time. If the glaze looked to thick, I would use a wet paper towel to wipe it off. I just wanted to make it look like a “dirty” white…not very noticeable.
It’s the same paint treatment I used on the guest house bedroom suite!
Then I attached the seat back on, and this is how it turned out…
I love it!

But it needed one more thing! A Monogram!
I found a letter “H” that I liked, and I printed it out on my computer…
Then I placed the copy paper under a sheet of stencil paper that I got at Michael’s the other day. It cost around $3.00.
I placed an old magazine underneath it all before I used my exact-o knife to trace the shape of the “H”.
The stencil turned out good. Not perfect, but I knew I could use a small touch up brush to smooth out any mistakes.
Then I removed the burlap from the seat, and I placed the stencil on the burlap…
I just used acrylic black paint and a
“dobber” sponge brush (I have no idea if it has another name, that’s just what I call it.) Unfortunately, I forgot to snap a picture of that. It’s a small circle sponge on the bottom of a little dowel rod.
And wha-la!
Next came the hardest part…centering it on the cushion. I had to remove staples several times because I wasn’t satisfied with the outcome. I finally got my measuring tape to help me get it just right.
I am very pleased with the results!
I am using this in our guest house bedroom. I have a space under one of the dormer windows that I would like to place a little desk.
Now I am on the hunt for a table that looks something like this, that I could paint black and place the stool under.
I have a feeling that I am going to enjoy this stool for many years to come.
