“Best DIY Projects of September” Linky Party!

September 29, 2010 AT 8:46 pm 15 Comments

Hey, ladies!!!

Welcome to my party!!!

I am so very excited to see all the fabulous DIY projects that you’ve done in September.

Funny thing is….I don’t have a project to share.  It’s totally cracking me up!  I have never had a month where I didn’t complete a project.

Yowza!  Full time teaching is killing me!

So I need some inspiration, girls….lay it on me!  Bring out the big guns, would ya?

Here are the party guidelines…

1) Please share only one project, and make it your best from the month of September. (It can be a new or old post from the month of September.)

2)  Please make sure your link is to a DIY post that is related to home decor or home improvement.

3)  Be sure to add a link back to my party through my button or a text link somewhere in your post.  This will help your readers find their way to my party so they can enjoy some DIY goodness too.  :)

4)  Please make an effort to visit 3-5 other bloggers’ links and leave a comment.  This would be a totally boring party if we didn’t talk to each other, right?

Now let’s get ready to par-tay!!!!

Show me the good stuff…

I can’t believe we did it!

September 28, 2010 AT 10:24 pm 39 Comments

I have big news to share over here in my little part of the world!

We put our house up for sale today.

Yep.

You heard me.

My house is for sale!!!

I don’t know whether to freak out or pass out.

We didn’t really plan this.  We are just sort of stepping out in faith to see what God has in store for us.

My husband and I have some dreams in our hearts that cannot really come true unless we take the first step.

So we took the first BIG step and put our house on the market.

Now we are going to watch and pray and see what God will do.  :)

If you think we are crazy for selling our house….

Then you are going to think we are even crazier when you see the house we want to buy….

Stop laughing.

I’m not kiddin’, ya’ll.

That’s the house we want to buy.

It’s was built in the mid 1860′s and sits on a one acre lot.  Oh, did I mention it is halfway torn down?  Minor inconvenience, don’t ya think?

Most people wouldn’t even touch this house, but it’s right up our alley!  The hubby and I are salivating over it!  :)

We would have to restore the house to it’s original exterior design, but we would then be able to build additions to the sides and back.  My hubby will do most of the work.

Please say a prayer that we will be able to sell our house and get this one, if it be God’s will.

What might be even crazier is that I soooo want to buy this house so I can blog about our re-do!!!  It would make for some great posts!  (I know.  It’s a sickness we bloggers have.)

I will keep you posted on what  happens.  It may not work out, and if it doesn’t, we will stay right where we are at.  No big deal.

In the meantime, please help me spread the word about my blog party on Thursday…

I would truly appreciate a shout out on your blog or in a tweet if you have the time.

Please come to my party and bring your best DIY project of September!

Have a blessed day!

Don’t Hate Me.

September 27, 2010 AT 9:50 pm 16 Comments

Before I start this post, I want to remind everyone of my “Best DIY Projects of September” Party!!!

I took a couple of months off this summer, but now I am ready to get my party on again!  I cannot wait to see all of the wonderful DIY projects that blogland produced in September!

Here are the rules:

1.  One entry per person.

2.  Must be a DIY project that is related to home decor or home improvement.

3.  Must be your best project from the month of September.  (If you don’t have one, you can come to the party anyway and check out all the great projects from other bloggers.)

4. Please add a link back to my blog party through my button or a text link.

I will have the linky button up on Wednesday night around 8 or 9:00 pm EST.  Be sure to stop by on September 30th to check out the BEST DIY PROJECTS OF THE MONTH!

Hope to see you there!

Now to my post…

You may be full of blog envy when you are done reading this post.  But please don’t hate me.

I have had extremely good fortune in blogland over the past few weeks.  Unfortunately, I haven’t had any time to post about it.

But I HAD to make time to tell you about this VERY special package I got in the mail…

I received my very own copy of The Reluctant Entertainer

sent to me by the fabulous author herself, Sandy….

Sandy and I met  at BlissDom this past year, and she has become a dear friend to me.

I am so proud to say that I have a friend who has written a book!  How cool is that?!

But this isn’t just any book.

This book is beautiful inside and out!

First of all, I love the shape and size of the book.

And the cover is delightfully fresh!

The inside is packed full of great recipes and wonderful stories of true hospitality.

I have been guilty many times of feeling like everything had to be perfect when we had company over to our house, but Sandy and her book has helped me to understand that the connections I make with the people around me are more important than the food and decorations.  How true!

Thank you for this wonderful gift, Sandy!  I consider it a treasure.  :)

If you would like a copy of Sandy’s book, it is available HERE.

My next piece of good fortune…

A few weeks ago, I entered a giveaway at (in)courage.  I love that site!  Have you been there?  It is a great source of inspiration for women.  Click HERE to check it out.

I won this adorable day planner.

It is just the cutest, girly calendar I have ever owned.  I love the quotes on each page.

Here are a few:

“She loved the Lord with all her heart and it cast an amazing light on all she did.”

“She wanted to grow in beauty and grace, so she asked God to show her the seeds she should plant in the soil of her heart.”

“There is radiance in a woman who knows how priceless she is to God.”

“She welcomes the years with arms open wide and loves life with the kind of passion that comes straight from God.”

(That last quote makes me think of my mom!)

And if you aren’t hating me yet…

I also won a giveaway on a blog of a friend of mine.  Cheryl is one of the sweetest ladies in blogland and she has a blog called Quilting Memories for Tomorrow.

When she told me about her fabulous giveaway, I had to go enter.  And I won!

Look at this beautiful book…

It is called  Inspirational Home, “simple ideas for uplifting decor and craft”, by Jeanne Winters.  It is packed full of crafty ways to “embellish every room in your home with loving touches that reflect God’s wonderful gifts.”

Doesn’t that sound wonderful?

Cheryl also made me some handmade cards.  They had the cutest little bird stamp on them.  Precious.  I have already used some of them.

I have known Cheryl for a while now, and I am so thankful to have her as a blog friend.  :)

Thank you so much Cheryl!

And lastly,

I got my $50.00 Lowe’s card in the mail for being selected as Best DIY Project of the Week at OneProjectCloser.com for my back patio re-do.

Let’s just say that this little prize didn’t last too long in my wallet!  :)

And the best part of winning was that they made a donation to Habitat for Humanity in my name!  What a blessing!

Thank you OneProjectCloser!

Okay.  I’m done.

I don’t want to torture you anymore with my insane amount of goodies!  Let’s just say my sister hates me.  She never wins anything.  Seriously.  Never.  Oh well, at least she’s got me for a little sister!  Who could ask for more, right?

Now go get those projects or posts ready for my party of Thursday!  See you there!

Wednesdays with Wanda (A Video Message from Me)

September 22, 2010 AT 6:44 am 40 Comments

One year ago today, my precious mother went home to be with her Lord.

This past year, I have shared her life with you every Wednesday, and in return, you have shared your love with me.

Now I want to take the time to say, “thank you”…

Father’s Day 2008

Meet Wanda…

Thank you for blessing me in so many ways this year!

All my love,

A Touch of Fall

September 16, 2010 AT 6:00 am 10 Comments

Well, it doesn’t feel like fall this week with temperatures close to 90 degrees, but I have added some fall touches to my house.

Okay, really just one fall touch.

Working full time has really slowed me down, ladies!

So I am celebrating the little things around my house.

Here’s my little thing:

The buffet in my house usually looks like this…

Last year, when Mom passed away, the ladies I worked with at Mom’s Day Out gave me a beautiful fall wreath centerpiece with a candle in the middle of it.

I put in on my kitchen table and it looked wonderful, but my two year old at the time kept picking at the berries on the wreath and making a mess.

So I decided this year, it might be a better idea to hang the wreath up.

I hung the wreath over the mirror above my buffet.

I hung it with burlap ribbon that I bought at JoAnn’s Fabrics.  I absolutely love this stuff!  (I know…shocker…Traci loves burlap.)

Seriously, this ribbon is delicate and delicious.  Yes. I said delicious.

I am still playing around with ways to decorate the buffet.  For now, I just made a table runner from brown burlap (insert shocked look on your face).

This is the beverage server and Verde berry bowl that I got with my free bonus points from my Willow House party!  I love them!

The berry bowl usually holds grapes or cherries in my fridge (it’s actually a strainer), but I thought it looked really cute with the little white pumpkins in it.

I can’t wait to use my beverage server at the next get-together I host.  Won’t it look great filled with sweet tea or lemonade?

So there you have it.  My fall touch.

I hope to do a few more things around the house and on the front and back porch, and I will be sure to share some pictures.

If you want a to see a plethora of fall ideas (wow, did I just say plethora?  are you impressed?) you need to go see Melissa at The Inspired Room.  She hosted a Fall Nesting Party last week that is full of Fall goodness.  Check it out!

Have a great day!

Wednesdays with Wanda

September 15, 2010 AT 12:16 am 20 Comments

Humbled.

That explains it.

No other word could touch how  I felt reading your comments on my Wednesdays with Wanda (WwW) post last week.

Except, blessed.

No, grateful.

Okay, and loved.

I wrote to you about next Wednesday, September 22nd, being the last  WwW post that I write.  It’s also the one year anniversary of my mom’s passing.

I asked for your advice, and you gave it.

Most of you encouraged me to do what I feel is best for me.  Thank you.

Some of you thought I should post once a month or whenever the Lord laid something on my heart to write about Mom.  Thank you.

Many of you shared the impact that my posts about Mom have made on your life and asked me to keep writing about Mom each week.  Thank you.

Thank you for taking the time to leave me a comment.

Thank you for the love I felt reading them.

Thank you for confirming in my life that God has used this little blog and my mom’s precious life to touch the lives of others.

It is exactly what my heart needed to heal.

I didn’t know why I started Wednesdays with Wanda a year ago. I just had to.

But as I think back over this year, and the privilege I have had to write about my mom’s life each week, I see God’s hand working in my life and in my heart.

Each post I have written and every comment you have left have been little “band aids” on my hurting heart.  And my heart is beating stronger now.

Is it completely healed?  No.  But it sure is looking a whole lot better than it did a year ago.

I needed to share my mother’s love, because she just had so much of it to give away.  And I felt she was cut short of the chance to give it away and touch others.  And I didn’t understand why God would do that?  Why would He allow one of His most faithful and true workers to be taken from this earth too soon?  Not to mention the fact that I still needed her.  And her husband needed her.  And her grandkids needed her.

And then I hear Mom saying, when she found out she had cancer last year, “I don’t understand God, but I trust Him.”

Mom trusted Him.  (And this little girl was watching her.)

And she taught me that I can trust Him.  And I do.

I trust Him with my fears, my heartaches, my life.

And let me make it clear that it is much easier for me to write those words than to actually believe and practice them.  It’s a daily battle.  A choice I must make everyday…TRUST.

But that is the person I want to be.  The person I will always strive to be.

One of Mom’s favorite quotes that she had written in one of her bibles was by John Newton (the author of “Amazing Grace”)…“I am not what I ought to be, I am not what I want to be, I am not what I hope to be in another world; but still I am not what I once used to be, and by the grace of God I am what I am.”

One thing I have definitely learned this past year is that life is a struggle.  It’s hard.  It hurts.

It makes me yearn for heaven and home  where…“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Revelation 21:4

So what do I do until then?  What do we do?

Look for God’s blessings in the midst of our struggles.  They are there, friends.  Look hard, you will see them.  Don’t stop looking until you do!  Pray and ask God to open your eyes so you can see them.

Do you remember the old hymn “Count your blessings”?  Mom used to sing that all the time when I was growing up.  It seems she would always sing it most when we were having a bad day or upset about something.  I can still hear her sweet voice singing, a little off-key…

When upon life’s billows you are tempest-tossed,

When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,

Count your many blessings, name them one by one,

And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Refrain:

Count your blessings, name them one by one,

Count your blessings, see what God hath done!

Count your blessings, name them one by one,

Count your many blessings, see what God hath done.

Are you ever burdened with a load of care?

Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?

Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,

And you will keep singing as the days go by.

When you look at other with their lands and gold,

Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;

Count your many blessings – wealth can never buy

Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.

So, amid the conflict whether great or small,

Do not be discouraged, God is over all;

Count your many blessings, angels will attend,

Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.

Isn’t it crazy to think that during the most difficult year of my life, I have also felt the most blessed?!

Why?

Because my heart is forever changed.

Mom taught me to trust God, to look for His blessings, and receive the peace that only He can give.

“Mom, I was watching.  I always wanted to be just like you.  Thank you for your sacrifices.  Thank you for your faithfulness to God.  Thank you for the Godly example you set in life and death.  Thank you for your precious love.  This little girl will never be the same.  Love you, love you, love you!”

I want to be DownEast Basic’s Next Top Model!!!

September 12, 2010 AT 9:18 pm 32 Comments

Okay, here is a post for fun!

I am going to the Relevant ’10 conference in just 6 weeks!!!

One of the sponsors of Relevant is DownEast Basics,  and they are holding a fashion show at the conference!  How much fun is that?!

And to make it even more fun…they are choosing 5 Relevant attendees to be the models.

I’m so there!

I am begging them to let me be a model!!!

Why do I deserve such an honor?

I can sum it up in two words….FIVE BOYS!

Yep, FIVE BOYS!

(Okay, one boy is a really big boy.  I fell in love with the biggest boy which resulted in the four smaller boys.)

I am a girly-girl sinking in a pool of testosterone!  Help!

My days are filled with burping contests, worms in tupperware containers, holes in socks, underwear on lamp shades, “poop” at the ends of every sentence, ninja turtles in my bed, and toilet lids that never-ever-ever stay down!

(Don’t let the suits fool ya!  They are usually covered in dirt from head to toe!  But I just love this picture of them.  It gives me hope.)

Now, don’t get me wrong…I love my boys!

It’s just that this girl could use a little pick-me-up!

That’s one of the reasons I am going to Relevant ’10.

I am looking forward to some time away with some amazing women where we can talk about girly things, and do girly things, and act like girly-girls…oh, to dream!

And to top it off by dressing up in beautiful clothes and being a model…be still my beating heart!

So, whoever is judging this contest…please pick me!

If you chose me, I would wear these beauties from DownEast Basics new fall clothing line…

I adore scarfs, so I would definitely pick this gray one!  I would love to wear the same white t-shirt with it as well.

Then I would pair it this cute skirt or a pair of blue jeans…

If I wore the skirt, I think these leggins would be just perfect underneath…

And to top it off…my favorite accessory…a purse!

How adorable is this one…

I am sooo getting this purse, even if they don’t pick me!

So, there you have it!

Wish me luck, and leave a comment agreeing with me that I should be DownEast Basics Next Top Model!

Have a blessed day!

P.S.  Just click HERE to see all of DownEast Basics’ beautiful clothes at great prices.  No, I am not getting paid to say that!  :)

Wednesdays with Wanda

September 8, 2010 AT 6:00 am 69 Comments

Hello sweet friends.

(Please be sure to read to the end of this post because I need your help with something.)

This past weekend, we celebrated my dad’s 69th birthday.

It was his first birthday without Mom.

I don’t know if you remember from last year, but my mom found out she had stage IV gastric cancer on August, 6th, 2009.  Four weeks later we celebrated Dad’s birthday.

We had a wonderful time together, but there was a sadness knowing that it would probably be their last together.

Saturday, I had my family over  to celebrate my dad’s birthday and (my) Luke’s 9th birthday.  Luckily, we were very excited to watch the UK vs. U of L football game that day!  (HUGE rivalries.)

It was a great distraction for dad.  We all wore our UK blue and cheered the Cats to a victory over Louisville!  Go Big Blue!

Here are a few pictures from the day…

What would we do without our families?

Just by being together, we turned what could have been a very sad day into a day with many smiles.

Of course, it’s very easy to smile when you are celebrating my dad!

He’s such an amazing father and grandfather.  I didn’t think I could love him any more…but I do!

I can hardly believe that in two weeks it will be the one year anniversary of my mom’s passing.

I cannot believe it.

To even say that I have been without my mom for a YEAR is beyond grasping.

Mom passed away in the early hours of the morning, September 22nd, 2009.

That day and the days to follow are somewhat of a blur to me.  Her passing came so quickly and was so unexpected.

We immediately began doing what all families do and began making plans for her funeral.

As the days passed after her funeral, I had a burning inside of me to share about my mom on my blog.

My readers (YOU) had given me so much comfort during that trying time.

I wanted you to know my mom.  Really know her.

Because in my opinion as her daughter, anyone who didn’t get to meet my mom on this earth really missed out!

She was one of a kind.  She was rare. She was special.

I pray that over this past year, as I have shared with you stories of my mom every Wednesday, that you have been able to get a glimpse into the beautiful heart of my amazing mother.

Was she perfect?

Absolutely not.

Did she make mistakes?

Absolutely yes.

But did she make a huge impact for God’s kingdom none-the-less?

You better believe it!!!

God can use each of us to touch the lives of others if we will just let Him.

I believe that God has even used my little ol’ blog to touch the lives of others through the stories of my mom.

I’ve been humbled by so many of your emails and comments.

So many of you have said you have been so blessed by my posts.  But the truth is ladies, I am really the one who has received the most blessings!

Though this past year has been one of the most difficult years of my life, God has used this blog and YOU to shower me with His blessings.  My cup runneth over!

When I started writing about Mom every Wednesday, I had no idea how long it would last or what I would even write about.  But each week, I felt the Lord lay something different on my heart to share.

I have talked to my sister for quite sometime about whether I should continue writing about Mom each week, or stop at her one year anniversary.

Right now, I am thinking that my last weekly Wednesday with Wanda post will be on Wednesday, September 22, 2010.  (The one year anniversary of her passing.)  I think it is so ironic that it lands on a Wednesday.

I need your advice on what to do.

I love that my Wednesdays with Wanda posts have given me an outlet to share my faith and let you, my readers, know a little bit more about me.  So, I wonder if I should keep Wednesdays as my “faith” day.  A day that I just share what God is teaching me, or has taught me.  I could still share stories of my mom during that time too.  I thought I could call it “Matters of the Heart”, or something?

That way, you could still come see me each Wednesday, and hopefully be encouraged in some small way in your walk with Christ.

Or if I didn’t do that, maybe I could do a Wednesday with Wanda post the first Wednesday of each month?

Or should I just keep doing them every Wednesday?

Let me know what you are thinking, ladies!

I need to hear your voices!

If you haven’t ever commented before, but have an opinion about this, please let me know.

Your comments will help me decide what to do.

Here’s one thing I DO know, though…

I couldn’t have gotten through this past year without YOU!

Sending many blessings your way,

Traci

My Willow House Party

September 6, 2010 AT 9:36 pm 22 Comments

Ladies, I am so sorry for not posting sooner!

Besides being unbelievably busy, my laptop went ka-put!  I have not been able to access my blog for about a week.  I have only been able to check my gmail on my phone.  Man…I feel so out of it.

So, I finally twisted my husband’s arm until it completely fell off, and he broke down and bought me a new desktop computer for my office.

I had a desktop computer that I purchased in 1999, which is a trillion years old in computer years.  It was soooooo slow.  Literally.

It would take over 15 minutes for a page to load on the internet.  Not kiddin.

I would click for a page to open, go downstairs and fold the laundry, come back upstairs, and the page still hadn’t loaded.

So when my laptop is down, I am basically computerless.

Maybe it’s a good thing.  But it sure didn’t feel like it.

But since I am teaching now and will be bringing home a paycheck in a few weeks, my loving (one-armed) husband gave me the green light to purchase a mini-mac for my office.

One word….LOVE.  (and I love my husband too.)  :)

Mac’s rock!

I am so excited about what I am going to be able to do with my pictures and videos for my blog now.  The possibilities are limitless!

So now that I have a computer working in my office, I am finally able to post pictures of my Willow House Party.

Let’s start with the most important pictures first…THE FOOD!

My sister and niece helped me out with the snacks, and believe me…they were delish!

My niece, Courtney, brought these delicious “cake truffles”.  She told me on the phone earlier, “Aunt Traci, these are better than those Oreo Truffles.”

What?  How can that be?  Have you tried those Oreo Truffles?  They are heaven on earth.  (recipe HERE)

But when I took a bit of the “cake truffles”, I will have to admit that I agree.  They are soooo good!

CAKE TRUFFLES

Ingredients:

1 (18.25 oz) package of cake mix  (Courtney used yellow cake mix)

1 (16 oz) container of prepared cake frosting

2 bags semi-sweet chocolate chips

sprinkles

Directions:

1. Bake the cake according to box instructions.

2.  Remove cake from oven when done and let cool 30 minutes.

3.  Crumble up warm cake mix in a large bowl and add frosting.  Mix together with a stand mixer or hand mixer.

4. Cover and chill in refrigerator for 3 hours or overnight.

5.  Line your cookie tray with wax paper.

6.  Use a melon scraper to scoop out the mixture into balls and place on cookie sheet.

7.  Set in freezer for one hour.

8.  Melt chocolate chips in microwave or on the stove top (double broiler).

8.  Using toothpicks, dip the cake balls into the chocolate and place on cookie tray to harden.  Place in refrigerator until time to serve.

9.  YUM!

(This is a Paula Deen recipe.  Click HERE to view her recipe.)

I made some delicious cheese truffles from a recipe found in my “Best of Philadelphia Cream Cheese” cookboook.  I loved having individual bite size cheese balls versus one large one that everyone has to cut into.

Holiday Cheese Truffles

Ingredients:

2 pkg. (8 oz each) of Philadelphia Cream Cheese, softened

1 pkg. (8 0z.) Shredded sharp cheddar cheese

1 tsp. garlic powder

dash ground red pepper, cayenne (I did not use this.)

1/4 cup chopped roasted red peppers

2 green onions, sliced

1 2/3 cups chopped pecans

Crackers of choice ( I used wheat thins.)

Directions:

1.  Beat cream cheese, cheddar cheese, garlic powder and ground red pepper with electric mixer until blended.  Divide in half.  Add roasted red peppers to half and onions to the other half; mix each well until blended.

2.  Refrigerate several hours until chilled.

3.  Shape into 24 (1-inch) balls.  Roll in pecans.  Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Cyndi made Mom’s “Ooey, Gooey Marshmallow Bars” that she had posted about on her blog.  You can find that recipe HERE.

To serve the spinach dip and bread cubes, I just flipped my (former) Southern Living at Home cake stand over.  It usually looks like this:

We had the party demonstration outside.  My friend Lori, the Willow House consultant, had decorated the display table beautifully for us to enjoy…

See the gorgeous green Berry Bowl in the above picture?  I got that with my bonus points!  It is a strainer, so I can just wash off my grapes or cherries and stick in right in the fridge.  I cannot wait to get it!

So many pretty things…

The weather was absolutely gorgeous that night, mid 70′s!

My beautiful sister, Cyndi, enjoyed sipping her coffee while relaxing in the swing…

And two of my Mom’s sisters were there, Aunt Tassy and Aunt Pat.  I don’t know what I would do without these ladies in my life right now.

I hosted a party two years ago, and Mom was there.  I really missed not having her with us this time.  She would have loved the food and the fellowship.  As I cleaned the house and got ready for the party, I reminded myself of Mom in so many ways.

Having my precious aunts there made me feel like Mom was nearby.  They look and act just like her!  We sat around the patio table and talked about precious memories of Mom as we ate our food.

I was so touched afterwards by the words my friend Lori shared with me.  She said she was amazed at the closeness I have with my aunts.  She informed me that that was rare and special and that she felt honored to be a part of our family that night.

She’s right.  Not many people are as close to their aunts as Cyndi and I are.  I am so unbelievably blessed with a family that loves me so much.  Mom’s sisters have “stepped in” to Mom’s shoes many times this past year when I was feeling her absence the most.

I am so grateful for the blessing of family!

Cyndi, and my precious niece, Courtney.  When the three of us get together, you can guarantee it’s gonna be fun!!!

My beautiful friend, Lori, ready to demonstrate some of the gorgeous Willow House products…

As it began to get dark, Lori demonstrated how you could use one of the bowls for a centerpiece with candles.  It was beautiful!

She also created an adorable fall display using the 3-tier stand.  I absolutely love decorating for fall, don’t you!!?

A couple pictures of the patio all lit up at night…

It was such a great evening!  I wish it didn’t have to end.

I should be getting my products in the mail soon.  I will share them with you when I do.  Can’t wait!

Hope you had a long, restful Labor Day weekend!

Blessings.

This post is brought to you by…

Julian & Co.
