Clipboard Project for my Craft Closet

Hey guys!

Before the weekend is up, I just wanted to share a quick little project with you.  :)

I just spent the whole past week talking about my laundry/mudroom, so I thought I would share something completely different!

Remember the series my sister and I hosted during the month of January?….

And remember when I reorganized my craft closet?

Here are the before and after pictures….

Something I made for that project was my little clipboard.

It was so easy to make.  I’m sure you have seen this done a million different ways in blogland, but here’s how I made mine:

I bought this clipboard for $1.00 at Goodwill, and I already had some scrapbook paper.

When making your clipboard, you do not have to paint the metal clip, but I wanted mine to be black.

In order to keep the paint from scratching off, you need to spray the metal clip with KILZ spray primer first.

After that dried, I sprayed the clip with some black spray paint.

The most difficult part of this project was cutting the paper to fit around the clip.  I actually messed up and had to cut it a second time.  So be sure you have a couple pieces of scrapbook paper you could use in case that happens to you.  :)

I hate to admit that I actually forgot to take a picture of the next step.

But I put a layer of Mod Podge on the clip board with a sponge brush and then laid the two pieces of paper I had chosen on top to dry.

Once it was dry, I put another layer of Mod Podge on the top of the paper.

Here is a picture I found on the internet from www.splitcoaststampers.com that shows this step well…

You can get Mod Podge at Walmart or any craft store.

The only thing left to do was add some ribbon to the clip.  I just used coordinating ribbons and tied them to the clip until I liked the results.

That’s it!

Super easy, but super cute!

This makes for a great teacher gift too.  I think it would look great with a monogram in the middle of the clipboard, don’t you?

So for just a few bucks, I have a cute and unique clipboard!

Why not give this project a try?

Send me pictures if you do! :)

  1. Your closet and clipboard look wonderful. I don’t use a clipboard, but think I’m going to have to make one to give to a friend, because this project is so cute.

Maybe a template from plain white paper would help with getting around the clip.

    1. Hi, I just thought I’d let you know that you can make your own modge podge!
obviously, you can just google “make your own modge podge” or here are a couple of links I found – it’s much cheaper, anyway, than the store-bought stuff.
I was in the UK for a while where I could find it but didn’t want to pay 3 times what I was paying in the states – which was already a lot.

  2. You did an awesome job. I absolutely love the clipboard. I want to make one so bad, but my time is taken up with so many other things right now. I am hoping that with summer coming that my grandchildren and I will be able to have time to work on some. Once again, great job!

  3. CURIOUS: I know it’s personal preference, but did you paint the back or paper the back? Thanks for the Kilz tip – I like the clip sprayed black. Unfortunately for me, I went ahead and tried this project on my own and made lots of mistakes (didn’t wait for the modge podge on the board to dry before putting the layer on the paper = WRINKLES) and didn’t prime the clip = chips off. Oh well, live a little, learn a little!
