She Bought Our House, He Bought Her House, We Bought Their House. Got It ?

Hey Ya’ll!

I hope you had a wonderful Easter weekend!

I wanted to give you a little update on the sale of our home.

It’s pretty crazy how it has all played out.

First of all, you need to know we do not want to sell our home.  Especially me.

I love this home. We have lived her almost seven years, and it is my “Tara”.

image (Insert Gone With the Wind theme song.)

Okay, it’s not as glorious as Scarlett’s Tara, but I love it just the same.

It has been the perfect home to raise my four boys.

(This picture was taken two years ago on our property.)

Our home sits on 3 beautiful acres surrounded by Kentucky four board fencing.  It’s also on a dead end street, so there is not a lot of traffic.  There is land on all four sides of our home.  Two acres are between our house and our neighbors’ homes on each side.  And there is 300 plus acres of land behind us.  We have a lot of privacy, and we love it.

Unfortunately, we are not in the school district that we want to be in when our oldest son goes to middle school this fall.

And since I am not going to teach this fall, we need to move.

We put our house up for sale last fall (a 6 month contract) with our realtor that ended around the first of April.

Since we had gotten hardly any bites on our home, we decided to take it off the market.

We were going to look into the option of going to court and signing over our “educational rights” for Jonathan to someone who lives in the district we are needing to be in.

We also decided to do a few needed projects around the home in the mean time.

So we started our staircase makeover.

And then this happened in our kitchen…

Boy, was I glad our house was off the market!

Then one day my husband called me to tell me our realtor called and there was a lady that wanted to look at our house.

I reminded him that it was off the market.

He said the lady was up here from Louisiana looking at just three houses and ours was one of them. (She had seen it online when it was on the market.)  She was going to be buying a house that day!

I reminded him of the terrible condition our home was in, and he said he would tell the realtor “no”.

Then he called me back a few minutes later and said the lady from Louisiana was on our street looking at our house, and her realtor said she really wanted to see inside.

No!  I thought.  I don’t want to sell our home! Plus, it’s a wreck!

My husband thought we should at least let her look at it.  And out of frustration I said, “Let her look at it.  Our house is a mess!  Serves her right.  Hope she enjoys our mess. If she buys our house, she is crazy.”

Well, guess what?  She’s crazy.

Here is a rundown of what our house looked like that day…

One half of our kitchen ceiling was missing and you could smell the damp sheetrock and insulation.

Their was a hu-mong-o pile of sheetrock and insulation (that we had to tear down from our ceiling) covering our back patio.

No beds were made in any of the rooms.

Toiletries were all over the bathroom counter.

The boys’ bathroom had toothpaste smeared all over the countertop, the toilet seat was up, and something yellow was mellowing in it. :)

Toys were strewn all over the den, and there were three huge piles of sorted laundry in the laundry room floor.

A mess, I tell ya!!

And that Louisiana Lady still made us an offer!

What?!!

I kept my house spotless for six months, and we couldn’t get a bite on our house.

Then we take it off the market, and the place looks like a tornado hit it, and we sell it?

Crazy.

Did God just kick us out of our house?  :)

It sure wasn’t what I had planned.  Go figure.

Well, we signed a contract on our home pending the sell of the buyer’s home.  (Which I was kind of hoping wouldn’t happen.)

Guess what?

She got a solid contract on her home three weeks after she put in on the market.  That’s unbelievable in this market!

So we are supposed to close on our home by the end of May.

sniff. sniff.

We were thinking about renting something until we decided what we wanted to do, but we found a home that we like.

It’s not our forever home, but it is in a great location and in the school district we want to live in.   We have made an offer on it, and we are supposed to sign a contract this week.

I will give more details later if it all works out.

So there you have it!

She (Louisiana Lady) bought our house,

He (Solid Contract Man) bought her house,

We (Worn out family of six) bought their house!

You know what I love about it most… I get to take YOU along for the ride!

Hold on!

  1. Wow. Wow. Wow. How amazing is that! :) Definitely a God thing. :) So happy for you, although I totally know how you feel. We get emotionally connected to our homes that we pour ourselves into.

Can’t wait to see pics of the new place! :) The roof’s not falling in, right? LOL

  2. God does have a sense of humor!! Just when we think we got it all figured out and give up, His timing is always right on time!!

  3. Never know what us Louisiana ladies might do :). Sounds like doors were opening and closing right and left. It is amazing how God works!

  4. The front of your house looks SO much like this house that a photographer I follow (her blog) is buying. Hey.. She’s from there too! Seriously.. I bet it’s the same person.

  5. You have a beautiful home. I can certainly understand your reluctance to give it up. But, I guess you were supposed to sell it after all. What a crazy story!

  6. Isn’t it wonderful how things happen? My husband and I were just talking last night about schools and our need to either sale or send them to private school–why can’t the schools just be good?

  7. Yeah, I would have to agree with April: who’s house are you buying? I am confused at this point.
Anyhow, I have been looking forward to hearing your house story. So glad you posted it today.

    Good luck!
PS: My house is on the market, too. Hardly any bites and there better be one because we have made an offer on other house sitting on one acre of land behind PA State Game land! Woo hoo! I really really need to have my house sold soon so we can move!

  8. Great how things happen God’s way, I’ll be following to see how everything works out! Hang in there:)

  9. So funny how things work out! When I went to sell my townhouse I had no luck! Then when I decided to update the countertops, some lady wanted to see it. There was sawdust, tools, and wood everywhere…a royal mess! Guess what…she bought it! LOL:)

  10. That’s how it worked out for us, too! I love it when you know it’s NOT your plan but GOD’s plan!! His had to be way better than ours anyway!!

  11. God continues to work in mysterious ways. And I love how you wrote, “it’s not what I had planned” – isn’t that ALWAYS the case? He takes our plans & turns them upside-down and says, “Ha!” :D Congrats on the sale & purchase of your homes!!

  12. Wow, how ironic! Best of luck with the move and also entering the contract with the new house. We closed last week on our home and moved in this past weekend. It’s a great feeling and one that you’ll have soon!

  13. Us folks from La ARE crazy! haha- I’m from New Orleans… And no mess that you have could compare to the post-Katrina mess, so she probably didn’t even notice! :) Congrats and condolences on the sale of your home. We just put ours on the market, and I’m heartbroken to be leaving the home where my babies were born… But we’ve got to make room for the next baby!

  14. Traci, Ready for the ride! Think I’ll get a pretty hot pink seat belt with rhinestones on it to belt me in as I ride along!!!

    God bless,
    d

  15. Traci I tell you what something is in the air with moving this year. So many people I know and blogger friends are moving now or very soon. Including us in about six months. We’re going into our third military move and heading to Maryland. I’m excited and ready to decorate a new home all over again. Thanks to my bog friends inspiring ideas I’m definitely ready. Woohoo! Congrats to you all on the speedy sale and the new home. I can’t wait to see it! It sounds like it was meant to be. Show us photos of it soon.

    Warmly, ~Melissa

  16. About 5 years ago we put our house on the market. For almost 9 months….while our new house was being built we kept that place spotless. And we never had an offer until we lowered the price $20,000.00 And then we had a couple of offers and took even less. It worked out just the way the Lord had it planned though. We only had to pay double payments for two months and we got to move at our leisure since we closed on the new house first and could move a few things at a time over two months time. So all of the worrying was for nothing….God worked it all out. (:>)

Your story is very interesting! Funny how you kept it spotless when it was on the market…..and then that lady bought it when you least expected it under all of those circumstances! Just God’s plan I guess!

    Happy Moving!

  17. Well, if all that came together, it is certainly “meant to be.” Just go with it. God will care for you all! My thoughts are always with you.

  18. How exciting, Traci. I know there are mixed feelings in your heart but I think you can work your magic in any home you live in and make it a beautiful place for your family. I have faith in you, my friend!

  19. Traci is it okay that I’m tearing up just reading this post. I know God has a plan…repeat three times. This is what I do when I don’t understand anything. Since I never understand anything I just through my hands up and say; I know God has a plan…
Know what? I’m excited for this new journey of yours. It’s selfish I know, but I am giddy about your new projects….what will we learn today! :) Bless your new home!

  20. Everything happens for a reason. That shows the lDy has good taste that through all of that mess she could see the potential and love in your house.
    Best of luck!

  22. Traci,

I have been following your blog for the last couple of months and LOVE IT! I am a mom of four too…and a teacher! God bless you and your family as you begin on this journey!

  23. WOW! what a story. We just never know what God has in store for us! I am sure He has great plans for you and your family in your new home! It must be something amazing to have orchestrated something as wild as your story. Love it when “our” plans fall through and His come through!

Blessings on you and your family!!

  24. Wow. Our situation exactly. Don’t want to sell. Love my house. Wrong school district. Not teaching. No serious bites or showings. Except our 6-month contract isn’t up yet (almost). . .and we don’t have any offers looming. . .interesting how small the world is, huh? Best of luck to you. . .God does know what’s around the corner, even if you don’t. Know our situation is intimate to Him too.

  25. hELLO Love your blog.
In Iowa we can choose which school our kids attend. the ‘new’ school just has to approve it .
too bad that’s not the case there. (something to work on :-)

although we felt God leading us to Home-school :-)

    God Bless .. lisa

  26. Oh my goodness, Traci! We have been through the same mess here with school districting (I actually live in your hometown!). After our neighborhood was “redistricted” to the most undesirable middle school in town, we began trying to sell our house. The problem was so did everyone else! We too have taken it off the market and will enroll our children in a private school in the fall. Not how we wanted to spend their college funds, but we have been left with no alternative. I don’t know if it makes me feel better or worse that this is happening in neighboring communities as well! I guess it’s a testament to the condition of public schools in our state….. Best of luck with the move and congrats on selling! Love your blog!

  27. God is good! We made an offer on our new house last summer that was our dream house in our subdivision and was a foreclosure. we unexpectedly won the bid and didnt even have our house on the market yet. We sold ours in 2 weeks. and there are still houses sitting for sale around ours…a year later… God had his hand on us, it all worked out for His glory. and so will things with you. Seek ye first…

  28. raci, Im new to your blog and I absolutely love this treaure I discovered by accident!!!!Congrats on selling your house but Im lost are you still going to “rehab” the house frm the 1800s?
