A Slipcover for My Office Chair

I have been wanting a different chair for my office for quite some time.

When we created the office about 5 years ago, my husband bought me a rolling chair from Walmart, I think.

It worked okay, but it proved to be extremely dangerous at times.  I may or may not have flipped out of that chair on numerous occasions.

I was wanting to get a new office chair, and of course, I love the ones they have in the Ballard Designs catalog.

This one costs $499.00-613.00.

Well ya’ll know I do not have that kind of money.

So you can imagine how excited I was when I saw this chair at Goodwill….

I about hit the floor when I saw the price tag…$12.50!   Can you say, “SOLD!”

The chair was actually in excellent condition except for some tears in the leather on the arms of the chair.

The color of the leather was a little orangier (is that a word?) than I wanted for my office.

I decided to paint the legs and arms black, and make a slipcover for the rest of the chair using a white canvas material.

When I make a slipcover, I like to pin the material to the chair and use a pencil to draw a line where the seam is on the chair.

Here is the material pinned to the back of the chair:

I drew the seam line then cut about a half inch below the line.  (Do NOT cut on the pencil line!)

It took some time and patience to figure out how to slipcover around those arms, but I finally did it.

I added velcro under the arms and velcro at each pleat on the corners of the chair to hold the slipcover in place.

And now I can enjoy my new office chair!

And I have not flipped over in this chair once!

I made a few videos of how I slipcovered this chair and plan on sharing them with you this week.  (I hope.) :)

I have about 30 dollars total in this chair.

That is a savings of over $450.00!

Cha-ching!

Have you found any Goodwill Goodies lately?

  1. Oh, I love it! You are so talented! I just recovered my dining room chairs (a simple stapling project), and thought I was awesome- but this is fantastic! My parents have an old office chair like that…

  2. Wow! I’ve never seen anything that interesting in the Goodwill stores I have visited. Super job. Can’t wait to see the video.

  3. Ah, yes, the office chair flip-out. I did it so often I was thinking I’d be a gold-medal contender should it ever become an official Olympic sport! It most often happens when there are not enough legs on the chair to stabilize it. Four is the magic number you want for optimal launching from your chair; five pretty much guarantees stability and far less danger.

You did an amazing job on the chair, Traci, I am liking as much as the one from Ballard’s! In fact, I think I like it better because of the slip cover and the black wood. Well done, very well done!

    Best,

    Kimberly
