Welcome to my BEST DIY PROJECTS OF JUNE Linky Party!

I am so glad you are here!

I have missed a lot in blogland this past month because I was busy moving into our new home.  So I am sure that I missed some amazing projects.

Here are the party guidelines:

1. Link up your BEST DIY project from the month of June, 2011.

2.  Your project needs to be related to home decor and/or home improvement only.  Makes sense, since I am a DIY home blog, right? :)

3.  One project per blogger, please.

4. Please add a link back to my party in my post. You can do it with a text link or use my blog button.  (It means the world to me.) :)

5.  For fun, why not visit the link before and after you and leave a comment?  It makes us all feel good when we know someone has viewed our project. :)

Now, let’s party!

Bathroom Makeover Part One {Mandy’s Blue Bathroom}

June 29, 2011 AT 11:13 am 14 Comments

Happy Wednesday!

I have a couple of things to tell you before I share Mandy’s blue bathroom.

First of all, I would love it if you would come visit me over at Beth’s blog, Home Stories A2Z, today.  I am guest posting about how to discover your decorating style. (Be sure to leave a comment telling me what a fabulous post it was and how I have inspired you to redecorate your entire home!)  Thanx.  :)

Secondly, I want to remind you about my linky party tomorrow.

It’s a monthly linky party featuring the very best DIY projects of blogland.  All you have to do is look through your June projects, pick your best, and link it up.  Only ONE link up per blogger. :)

There may be fewer links at my party, but it will be the best of the best!  Of course, be sure your post is about a DIY home decor or home improvement project (no recipes, clothing, etc…).

See you there!

Now to Mandy’s bathroom!

My hubby and I just finished Mandy’s kitchen remodel, and we have moved on to her bathroom.

This is a typical bathroom of a home built in the 70′s.

Check out all the blue-ness…

Blue toilet, blue sink, blue tile….

Blue shower and tub…

This bathroom is located in the upstairs hallway, and it is the bathroom that most guests use when visiting Mandy’s home.

This bathroom desperately needs updating!

We are going to give the cabinet a new coat of white paint and new hardware.

The sink top will get a new vanity, white sink, and oil-rubbed bronze fixtures.

All the tile will be removed from the walls and shower.  The tub will get glazed a clean, crisp white.

My hubby will also be installing  a new tile floor!

It’s going to be gorgeous!

Can you picture it?

I cannot wait to share the transformation with you.  :)

If you have any advice or suggestions, feel free to share!  You guys always have great ideas! :)

A Peek Inside Our {someday} Guest Cottage

June 27, 2011 AT 12:27 pm 46 Comments

If you have been reading my blog for a while, you know that I did not want to sell our previous home and move.

We had lived their seven years (the longest we had ever lived anywhere), and had put a lot of love, blood, sweat, and tears into that property.

One of my favorite things about that home was the two car detached garage with a “guest house” above it that we built from scratch.

My husband built the cabinets, installed the floor,  painted the walls, installed the plumbing, laid the tile, hung the lights, and more.

I decorated the guest house with treasures from thrift stores and garage sales.  I painted all the furniture and was able to incorporate more of a cottage style decor, which was loads of fun!

My blog actually started with a lot of my guest house projects.

So when I knew that we were going to have to move, I just knew that we would not be able to afford a home with a guest house.  It took us a lot of time and money to create the guest house at our last home.

And I knew we would not have the money to create another guest house right away at our new home.

Maybe we would have a guest “room”, but not a guest house.

So imagine my surprise when we looked at the property of our future home, and in the back yard, I saw this…

My husband said I literally ran up to the front porch in excitement, but I like to say that I walked briskly. :)

I just couldn’t believe my eyes!  This property already had a guest house!

The owner who built our home was an artist.

So he created a studio for him to paint in.

I love this little sign on the side of the guest house…

“Studio & Poutin’ House!”

What a great idea.  When my kids start fussin’, I can just send them to the Poutin’ House! :)

Here is the front of the cottage (I think I want to call it my guest cottage, doesn’t that sound quaint?)

We hope to maybe add hardyboard siding to the front, and paint it a different color.  Of course, we would get a new door!

This is what the side of the cottage looks like…

We are going to possibly add on to the cottage where the deck is.  We want to add a bathroom to the cottage.  Right now, there is storage under the deck.

Here is the view from the deck…

When you walk in the sliding glass doors from the deck, you see this…

As you can see, the cottage is full of the guest house furniture from our previous home, and a whole lot of other stuff that wouldn’t fit in our home!

I do not know what we would have done without this extra space to store things in!

There is wood everywhere!  Wood walls, wood floors, and a wood ceiling…love it!!

Won’t it be fun to decorate this little space?!!!

It will be a while before we can do anything.  No funds, of course. :)

I am dreaming of spaces like this…

(Sarah Richardson’s Bunkie)

When we are finally able to renovate this little guest cottage, we will share all the fun with you!

As a side note…

Just a little reminder that this Thursday is my linky party!

(I had to skip my party last month due to my move, but we are back in action now!)

I cannot wait to see your best DIY project of June (home decor and home improvement related)!

Have a blessed day!

Refreshing My Outdoor Furniture!

June 24, 2011 AT 6:03 pm 23 Comments

Just wanted to show you something I did that didn’t take much time or money.

My outdoor furniture was looking kind of rough…

(See the ugly brick I want to paint?)  :)

So I got out my handy dandy can of spray paint and freshened her up!

See the difference a little paint and a few minutes can make?  The newly painted chair is on the left…

Then I decided to paint my black iron table and chairs.

I have had this table set for about 9 years!  It was a hunter green when I bought it for $25.00 at a yard sale.  I spray painted it black.

(Picture of my table a few years ago on the patio of our previous home.)

Every couple of years, it gets a fresh coat of paint.  The chairs were scratched up from the move and the paint was dull from weathering.

The satin black spray paint made it look like new!

(Freshly painted chair on left)…

Doesn’t she look all shiny and pretty!

It only cost me a few bucks and about 10 minutes of my time to have brand new looking outdoor furniture!

Have you spray painted your outdoor furniture yet this year?

Send me some links!  I would love to see them.

More Painted Brick Homes…{And my favorite!}

June 23, 2011 AT 5:35 pm 53 Comments

Okay.  I am obsessed with painted brick homes.

They are just so stinkin’ beautiful to me!

My hubby was working on Mandy’s bathroom remodel  last night, and the boys and I went with him.  While he was slaving away in the bathroom, we took a joy ride to that beautiful area of Lexington (or “where the rich people live” as my boys say) to go on a scavenger hunt for more painted brick homes.

It is a very wealthy, established part of Lexington.  Former UK head coach, Tubby Smith, lived in this area.  Honestly, there are more painted brick homes than non-painted brick homes around there!  Sometimes there would be a whole street of painted brick homes.

I was in heaven!

Look at some of these beauties…

This home was a gray color.

Side of house…

(the landscaping was amazing!!)

Here are some more gorgeous bone color homes (which seemed to be the favorite color in this area).

I love the two pictures of the home below because it is something we could totally do to our house.

We are thinking of adding a second story someday with dormer windows, and eventually a two car garage to the side.

I am also wanting to extend the front porch someday.

Can you picture it?

I didn’t like this paint color at all.  Just had to throw it in the mix.

(Please forgive me if this is your house.  If you like this color, that is all that matters.  I’m sure you are a lovely person, despite the color of your house.)

I had to drive by the home below twice to get a picture of it.  The first time some people were standing outside the home, and I thought I would totally freak them out if I started taking pictures of them.

I was right, wasn’t I.

This was one of my favorite homes.  It was breathtaking!

white brick house

The landscaping was amazing, and the paint was the perfect “bone” color.

Here is the garage that went with the home above.  It sat to the left of the house.

A beautiful home painted in a taupe color…

At this point, I had all the windows rolled down in our car, and my boys were hanging out the windows like a bunch of hooligans.

They were yelling at all the walkers and runners going by.  You could totally tell we were not from those parts.  :)

This house was a show stopper to me.  My boys asked, “Mom, will we ever live in a house this big?”

To which I replied, “Um…no.”

But it doesn’t hurt to dream…

Here is another darker color brick…look at that lawn!

Okay.

You wanna see my favorite house?

You wanna see the house that made me say, “Oh my heavens!”

You wanna see what color I think I might paint my house?

(After I knock on the door and ask the owner what color the brick is painted?)

HOLY MOLY, BATMAN!

I love this house!

Okay…so it is like 300 times bigger than mine will ever be, but would you look at it?!

I love the color!

If you could see it in person…it is not stark white, but it isn’t bone white either.

It’s just right.

I love the brown wood door.

I am hoping to get an antique wood door for our front porch.  And we will be needing a new roof soon, so maybe we could do the same gray shingles.

Isn’t it lovely?

When we first started thinking about painting our house, we were leaning toward a taupe/gray color.

Sort of like this one…

And I still love this color.  And I’m not gonna say that we won’t paint our home this color.

Many of you said on yesterday’s post that you liked the gray or taupe color homes the best.  It made me second guess my choice of off white.

But I really love the off white brick.  And I think it will stand out beautifully  on our property.

If I do not do the off white, I think I will go with this “bone” color (my second favorite color)…

white brick house

I just love painted brick.

It’s classic and old south to me.

I’m not sure about the shutters yet.

Dark brown?

Black?

Dark Gray?

We’ll see…

Funny thing is, my sweet Aunt Pat (my mom’s sister) left this comment on my “painted brick” blog post yesterday…

Traci,
I love all these beautiful houses!

I just wanted to tell you and I’m sure you probably already know

that Wanda always loved and wanted a white (or off white) house with black shutters.

I’m just sayin… Whatever you pick, I know it will be stunning!
Love you!

No, Aunt Pat, I didn’t know that about my mom!  It made my heart skip a beat.  Now I know where I get it.  :)

Thank you for telling me.

That makes my love of white brick homes even more special.

Now, I’m not going to tell you that I am 100% for sure gonna paint my house an off white.

I do have to get a confident thumbs up from my better half.

So, we’ll see…

Thanks for all the comments you left yesterday.  It was so much fun to read each one.

So what do you think?

Do you think my home will be pretty painted off white?

Would love to hear your thoughts.

I love you guys.

Painted Brick {A plethora of inspirational pictures!}

June 22, 2011 AT 4:24 pm 82 Comments

I think that we have definitely decided to paint our brick exterior probably.  :)

(Our home before we moved in.)

The boys and I jumped in the car a couple of days ago and drove through an area in Lexington that is full of older brick homes.

Many of those homes have painted exterior brick.  I was hoping to find a color that I loved.   (And I think I did.)

I took my camera and snapped pictures through the windows!  Sorta felt like I was doing something illegal.

Surprisingly, the boys loved it!  They kept yelling, “Ooh there’s one, Mom!”    “Over there, Mom!”

They actually want to do it again sometime.

As a child, I remember riding around with Mom looking at houses.  Especially when she was trying to get ideas for landscaping around her house.  She even took pictures. :)

If you are stuck in a rut and need inspiration, just go visit your favorite nearby neighborhood and soak up all the great inspiration.

Here are even more pictures I took of painted brick homes…

Look at this beautiful white washed brick home…

Of course, I love this color palette…(those red pillows!)

I tried to get a picture of UK Basketball Coach, John Calipari’s home, but I couldn’t slow down to take the picture.

So I grabbed some pictures off the internet!

Here is his beautiful painted brick home…

So what do you think?

Tell me which picture was your favorite, or what paint color you liked best?

(Then I will tell you which color I think I have decided on!)

Kitchen Makeover Reveal

June 21, 2011 AT 8:50 pm 37 Comments

Do you remember the kitchen makeover we started over at our friend’s house over a month ago?

We started it right before our move (not a real smart idea).

But my hubby finished it about a week ago, and we love the way it turned out.

Here’s some background information if you missed it:

I have a longtime friend, Mandy, who called me about some advice on re-doing her kitchen.  She had gotten a contract on how much it would cost, and my husband knew he could do it for a lot less.

So Mandy asked us to complete the makeover.

Because we love that kind of work so much, we said, “yes!”

We had to work within their budget which determined a lot of our choices in materials.

Here is a look at the “before”.

The “after”…

Before…

After…

The parquet floor was not in good shape and needed to be covered.  A wood laminate was perfect for our budget.

Mandy definitely wanted to get rid of her pink countertops, and we decided to paint her stovetop black with appliance paint to match her other appliances.

AFTER….

My hubby installed a bead board backsplash all around the kitchen and all new outlets.

He also installed under the cabinet lighting throughout the kitchen, but I forgot to take a picture of that.  Oops.

The makeover also included all new hardware for the cabinets, and a fresh coat of white paint.

A HUGE change that was made was removing the wallpaper.  NOT an easy task!

We painted the walls a nice neutral color, and then Mandy brought up an antique table and chairs that she had downstairs.  She also added some decor from around her home.

Pushing the table against the wall gives her more room in her small kitchen. It’s mostly just Mandy and her hubby using this table on a daily basis.  When they have company, they can move the table out for more seating.

My favorite piece on the table is this little antique box!  La-huv!

We still need to get a window treatment.  I am looking for a roman shade that will look good.

I think Mandy’s kitchen turned out beautiful!  It is such a huge improvement!

One more look at the before and after…

Now, look what which room we are tackling next at Mandy’s house!…

The demolition has already begun!  Woohooo!!!

Linking the reveal to…

Front Porch Ideas and More!

June 20, 2011 AT 11:30 am 5 Comments

I just have to share with you a great little site.

Front Porch Ideas and More!

return to homepage

I found their site when they emailed me to ask me if they could feature the drop cloth curtains I made for my back patio.

Of course, I said yes.

Handmade outdoor curtain panels

They did a wonderful write up/tutorial about this process.

They also asked me if they could feature how we stained our back patio to look like tile (my all time favorite project!)

staining concrete floors

Mary and her husband are so sweet.  And I think they have done a wonderful job collecting ideas of how to decorate porches.

I have enjoyed browsing around their site for inspiration, and I thought you might too.

So click on their header at the top of the page and head on over there to say “hi!”.

Tomorrow I will be sharing our friend’s kitchen makeover that we finished.  See  you then!

My Favorite Spot on our New Property

June 18, 2011 AT 6:02 pm 31 Comments

There are so many things I love about our new home.

To be honest, the home is not one of them.  :)

The things I love the most about our new home is the property.

I love our land!!

We have 5 beautiful acres to live on, and we ALL love it.

I love our front yard….

I love our “someday” guest house…

With a wonderful porch and deck area…

Can you picture the potential with me?…

My husband loves his little red barn…

And the tractor that came with it…

We love all the trees!

We even have apple trees and grapevines!

But the spot I fell in love

with when we first saw the house was this….

A little arbor made for a swing!

We cleaned it up a bit and added the swing my dad made me almost ten years ago…

I cannot tell you how much we love this spot.

It is a perfect spot to sit in the shade on a hot summer day.

It’s the perfect spot for Cy and I to sit in the evening and watch the boys play.

It’s the perfect spot to steal a few moments with a little four year old that says, “Swing with me, mama.”

We have already made so many special memories right there in that spot, that I can only imagine how many more are to come!

What is your favorite spot at your home?

My House is Now Visible from the Road!

June 16, 2011 AT 11:31 pm 20 Comments

Hey friends!

I am so excited to share with you some more work we have completed on the house.

One of the things we knew we would change as soon as we bought the house was the view from the road.

The house was completely hidden by a big beautiful tree.

IMG_0307

At first, we thought about cutting the whole tree down.

But instead, we decided to trim it up a little bit and see how that looked.

So my husband spent a whole day doing this…

IMG_1161

And the boys and I spent the whole day doing this…

IMG_1171

It was in the 90’s that day, but the boys were troopers!

IMG_1170

Even my little guy got in on the action….

IMG_1174

**Be sure to watch the video to catch him in action!!

Check out this video!

Now you can see our home from the road!

I love it!

We also did a lot more clearing out around the property that I will share with you soon!

Have a blessed day!
