A Peek Inside Our {someday} Guest Cottage

When we were considering buying a 1400 sq foot brink ranch on five acres, I wasn’t too happy about it.

front-of-house

Until I saw what was in the back yard….

My husband said I literally ran up to the front porch in excitement, but I like to say that I walked briskly. :)

I just couldn’t believe my eyes!  This property had a guest house!

The owner who built our home was an artist.

So he created a studio for him to paint in.

I love this little sign on the side of the guest house…

“Studio & Poutin’ House!”

What a great idea.  When my kids start fussin’, I can just send them to the Poutin’ House! :)

Here is the front of the cottage (I think I want to call it my guest cottage, doesn’t that sound quaint?)

We hope to maybe add hardyboard siding to the front, and paint it a different color.  Of course, we would get a new door!

This is what the side of the cottage looks like…

We are going to possibly add on to the cottage where the deck is.  We want to add a bathroom to the cottage.  Right now, there is storage under the deck.

Here is the view from the deck…

When you walk in the sliding glass doors from the deck, you see this…

As you can see, the cottage is full of the guest house furniture from our previous home, and a whole lot of other stuff that wouldn’t fit in our home!

I do not know what we would have done without this extra space to store things in!

There is wood everywhere!  Wood walls, wood floors, and a wood ceiling…love it!!

Won’t it be fun to decorate this little space?!!!

It will be a while before we can do anything.  No funds, of course. :)

I am dreaming of spaces like this…

(Sarah Richardson’s Bunkie)

When we are finally able to renovate this little guest cottage, we will share all the fun with you!

  1. before i even got to the bottom of your post, i was thinking about sarah richardson’s bunkie. i want a bunkie–mainly because i want a reason to say “bunkie” more often–such a fun word! :)

  2. Hi Traci! As I was reading you post I was thinking about Sarah Richardson’s new show on HGTV — “Sarah’s Summer Home” — have you seen it? She whitewashed most of the walls and floors, covering the knotty pine ever-so-slightly. It’s gorgeous! And then you posted a Sarah Richardson photo, so I assume you know what I’m talking about.

I love your guest house. You are going to make it into such a beautiful, restful spot some day.

  3. Oh, Trci! What a darling guest house! I’m so proud for you! I know with all of your talent and in time you’ll have that little house looking like a doll house! ;) Now, when company comes just poke in a pee pot for them! :)
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia ;)

  4. You know that was a gift from the Lord. I’m sure He could hardly wait to see the look on your precious face when you discovered it. Oh, He does give good gifts to His children. I am so thrilled for you!

P.S. I’m Rachel’s mom. You were such a sweetheart to keep the “Praying for Rachel” button on your blog for so many months. I blogged about her last visit to the Pediatric Neurosurgeon today. She was given a clean bill of health and we are overjoyed at all that God did!!! She is a walking, living, breathing miracle. Thank you for all of your prayers. He heard every one!

  5. Wow, what a treat to have that already built and pretty much a clean slate to start off on. I am so jealous. I was wondering if you would tell me the dementions of that guest cottage. It looks just about right for what we are trying to build on some property we have. I just need a small cottage to stay in while visiting there and that looks just perfect for what we are doing.
I wish it was already there waiting for me to add all the fun touches like yours is, but, we will get there eventually. I’ll be watching to see what you do to your little cottage.

  6. So glad you found the bunkie pics from Sarah’s summer house. Isn’t it amazing and inspiring? Your guest cottage has so much potential I can hardly stand it! What a fun and unique space to have. Can’t wait to see what you do with it. :-)

  7. Traci,

I’m sure that you did “walk briskly”, ladies don’t run:P What a wonderful guest cottage that will be some day and even if “someday” is not in the near future, planning is half the fun, isn’t it?

  8. What a cute little cottage. That’s so great that you were able to get a guest house when you moved. I’m sure that made it easier.

  9. Love that little cottage house. I too adore Sarah Richardson’s style and love what she did with her cottage and bunkie. She is featured in this months COUNTRY LIVING magazine. Did you see the Sarah’s Cottage episodes? Love it!
That little gem of yours is going to be so much fun to makeover when you have the time and money. Can’t wait, as I know you will take all of us on that ride with you. : )

  10. Can’t wait til this little makeover starts!! Such a cute & quaint space! Thanks for the reminder about the linky party…I would have totally forgot!

  11. I, too, have always wanted a guest house. We moved to Maine, which means we have lots of company. We are currently building a garage (as in now http://bornambitous-bornimaginative.blogspot.com/2011/04/excavation.html) that is sooo similar to yours, except it doesn’t have dormers (yet…we’re thinking of adding them later perhaps). I wanted to put a guest nook there too. Your old one is SO inspiring! I have a whole bunch of nosy questions (such as did you have to drill a septic septic, how large was the space, Were there two rooms and a bathroom?). Anyway, I imagine you’re busy, but I’m completely inspired by this, and you’re pinned. :)

  12. I love your previous guest house and it is amazing that you have another one. It will be really fun to see what you do to your new little “Poutin” house.

  13. Oh my goodness gracious! How can you stand it? There are so many possibilities out there! Love the wood everywhere, but that whitewashed look is so dreamy! Have fun with this treasure!

  14. I LOVE it! If you need any help when you start working on it, give me a yell…I’ll be right over! :)
    It’s SO cute in there!

  18. Oh God is so good to give us the desires of our hearts. What a perfect little guest house. You are going to have so much fun making it just the way you want it!

  19. OMG, that is FABULOUS! I remember being sad that you would be leaving your sweet little guest house when you announced you would be selling. I didn’t see the post about the new house having it’s own. I guess that’s what I get for having a baby and slacking on my blog reading huh?
I can’t wait to see what you do with your new guest cottage! So…when can I come visit?

  20. Wow! The inside of this new guest house is perfect! You might want to claim it as your “girl cave” when the testosterone levels get too high in the main house.

  21. What a wonderful treasure to find there. I am looking forward to all the changes you will make to it. It will be spectacular.

  22. When I saw you were redoing a guest house with all wood walls, floors, etc., I thought, “How about Sara Richardson’s bunkie??” And you were one step ahead of me!! Can’t wait to watch the guest house progress!

  23. I cannot WAIT to see what you do with that guest cottage! That, along with the grounds, would have sold me on your property.

  24. God is Good! And, sometimes he has a sense of humor…AKA…the much longed for Guest House!
Love your decor inspiration! This is my first comment.
    Blessings~
