Building a Barn Door {and good times with my in-laws!}

The week before the 4th of July, my mother and father-in-law came up to see us.  It was the first time for them to see our new home!

I have been blessed with wonderful in-laws!

So many people ask me where my husband gets his amazing work ethic?  Well, here’s the answer..

This is my husband’s father, and the boys call him “Pop”.

He is one of the hardest workers I know.  He can build a house from top to bottom, restore old buildings and old cars, has exquisite taste, and is always ready to help others.  (And isn’t he handsome?!)

Whenever my in-laws come for a visit…we work.  We do not lounge around, believe-you-me!

This visit was no different.  Cy and his dad decided to start making new doors for our barn.

The boys were loving this idea.

Pop and Cy had four little handymen around them at all times. :)

Eli helped carry the  nails in the army pouch Pop bought him at the habitat store…

I love that my boys are soaking up their dad and Pop’s hard work ethic and carpentry skills!

One side down, and one to go!  I am going to love these new doors.

We are planning on painting this barn an off white color to match the house.  (When we finally paint it!)

The best thing about working hard is celebrating it!

We went out to eat at one of our favorite restaurants one night…

And my beautiful MIL and I took a break one day and visited one of my favorite little places..

The Glitz in Nonesuch, Ky!

If you are ever nearby, you have to go check this place out!  It is so much fun.

There is a very “glitzy” restaurant in the bottom level…

You will be amazed at all the “glitz”!

And the menu is full of the most delicious food you have ever tasted…

My favorite thing on the menu (and my mom’s!) is the Nonesuch Kiss dessert…

Upstairs at the Glitz is two levels of antiques ( and more glitz!)

Look at this adorable little fish ornament!

So much eye candy!…

I was able to find a few things that weren’t so glitzy..

But they were WAY out of my price range.

The very best part of my lunch at The Glitz was getting to spend some quality time with my mother-in-love.

I am so blessed!

My MIL and I are so much alike.  We both love to go thrifting together, we love antiques, we both can sew (she used to reupholster the interiors of Porsches!  Yes, the car!), and we both love cokes from McDonald’s!

We had such a wonderful visit, and we hated to see them leave.

Thank you, Pop and Grammaw, for such a special time!

  1. What a lovely family!
And your new barn is going to be lovely, fun & practical…. think of all the “boy toys” you can store in there… : )
I have 3 grown boys & I am really always amazed at the things they know about building projects, cars & such… I often ask, “How do you know that kind of stuff”? (They are in business & engineers.)
I think it was just from following their dad around & thier 2 handy grandfathers….
You are Blessed… as am I… I am thanking God today for 2 fabulous grandfathers… Thanks for the reminder.. : )

  2. I love that your boys are soaking in all of this building stuff. One year my son asked his grandparents for a REAL drill for Christmas. He got it….he was 3 1/2. That was before cordless drills. Just gave him a 2 x 4 and he was occupied for hours.. I know…a real drill at 3 1/2,…what was I thinking? NOT,,,I guess. He always loved to fix things. He would take apart toys just so he could put them back together. He’s 25 now and the go to guy when his friends need something built, fixed, etc. He’s in medical school now. Yep…..wants to do ortho surgery. Says he still gets to play with drills and tools….they’re just a little smaller.

  3. Your barn doors are going to be fabulous. Isn’t it wonderful to have such a fabulous family and so much talent too. When my mom and dad use to come visit it was always a work visit. I miss them so much. Thanks for supporting the Cloche Party too. You are the best. Hugs, Marty

  4. You are so blessed to have in-laws you love and appreciate- and I’m sure they think they’re blessed to have you, too. It’s so great to see all those handsome boys working hard and building things. I only “know” you from this blog but I can tell that you’re going to raise some fine men. I’m praying the same thing for myself. The world could use some more good men!

  5. Wow!! Lots of Glitz going on!! Your new barn doors look great & I love that sweet pic of eli with his little pouch on….ADORABLE!! Your boys are going to grow up to be handy just like their dad & Pop!!

  6. Hi Tracy! I’m a first time commenter, but I have a proposition for you. I have two girls (ages 5 and 1)… would you be interested in arranging marriages between them and any two of your boys?! They are all so adorable and will grow up to be such amazing men. Your barn doors are beautiful!

  7. Hey Traci, It’s so good to hear about your good relationship with your inlaws. Not everyone can say that. I am so thankful to have wonderful inlaws. My mother-in-law was precious! As a matter of fact, my blog is named for and dedicated to her. I like to compare our relationship to that of Naomi and Ruth in the Bible. I also love the Glitz! Another place we are gonna have to get together! Gail

  8. Hey girl! What a wonderful thing for you to have such a great relationship with your in-laws. They sound like grand people–but then what would you expect of Cy’s family?

I love that your barn doors look like barn doors–or at least the way I always picture barn doors. Sounds like your new property is turning out to be an ideal place for four active boys. I’m so happy for you! (By the way, is this property in the right school district?)

  9. Hey friend~

  12. My comment is that it is so nice and refreshing to hear a young woman (yes, you Traci) comment on how much she not only loves and enjoys her direct family, but how she also realizes how fortunate she is to have wonderful role models as in-laws!! I’m sure your inlaws enjoyed their visit as much as you did. Thanks for sharing the great pictures, I enjoyed each one.

  19. I got a kick out of the picture with Eli & his silly bands! My youngest LOVES silly bands & wears them ALL at the same time too. His older brothers shake their heads at him, but I think it’s cute :)

  20. It is such a wonderful blessing to have a great MIL. I HAVE ONE TOO! So glad you girls were able to slip away and enjoy some glitz. :) So excited to see your projects are coming together on the “new estate”.

  21. Have been reading through some older post and ran across this one and just had to comment. My former MIL (she lived in Versailles) took me to The Glitz for lunch and antiquing afterwards. It was such a lovely and fun time. So much so that my MIL and I ended up taking my mom there some months later. Great place.

This post just brought back some wonderful memories. Thanks for sharing your trip with your MIL….what a blessing.

    Hugs,
    Cindy
