“Best DIY Projects of August” linky party!

August 30, 2011 AT 9:42 pm 18 Comments

Wow!  Can you believe we are at the end of August?!  Really?!!!

September is upon us, and I am beyond excited!  It is time to bring out the mums and pumpkins.  This is my favorite time of the year!

So let’s say goodbye to August with a GREAT linky party.

Remember: This linky party is to spotlight

your BEST DIY project of August.

Here are a few guidelines for my party:

*Your project needs to be about DIY home decor or home improvement.

*Only one project  per blogger, please.

*Your project needs to be from the month of August.

*Please enjoy visiting other great projects by other bloggers and leave some comment love.

I looked through my August posts, and decided that  my best project, (or maybe just my favorite), was the DIY Nursery Word Art I made for my sweet niece, Courtney.

It is the first time I have ever made anything like it, and Courtney and I think it looks great in baby Colt’s nursery!

Courtney is scheduled to have a C-section on Friday, so please say a prayer for her and baby Colt.  Thanks!

Now it’s your turn!  I cannot wait to see your best!

(FYI:  I will also be spotlighting some of your projects on my blog in September!)

A Laundry/Mudroom Makeover Re-visited

August 29, 2011 AT 11:47 pm 18 Comments

Last December, we built a laundry/mud room in our garage.   We were trying to sell our home at that time, and we thought a laundry/mud room would help the house to sell.

Here is a before picture of our garage:

My very talented husband studded up some walls in the corner of our garage to create our new mud/laundry room…

He did all the plumbing and wiring himself, and created this little storage bench exactly like I wanted to store the boys’ shoes…

Four separate storage spaces for four sweet little boys’ shoes.  HERE  is the video of how he made it.

Cy also installed the board and batten treatment in our laundry room.  You can see how he did it HERE.

We were so thrilled with how it turned out, and I had a blast decorating it!

I completed some of my favorite DIY projects to decorate the room on a tiny budget.

One of my VERY favorite projects I have ever completed on my blog is this $3.00 Pottery Barn Style pendant light makeover.

I probably get more emails about this project than any other!

Some more DIY projects for the laundry/mud room included:

This velcro skirt  for the mud sink.

This  mirror makeover for above the mud sink.

And this little  blue mason jar soap dispenser.

I also made another Ballard Designs inspired shelf for my laundry room.

You can see the tutorial of how to make it HERE.

I was so proud of this room, because Cy and I worked so hard to complete it together.  It was a lot of fun.  And to be honest, I miss it like CRAZY!

But I have great plans for our future laundry/mudroom in our new home.  However, it  may be several years before I get to that project. :)

Thanks for letting me share our DIY laundry/mud room with you again!

Have a blessed day!

Old Doors for our New Addition!

August 29, 2011 AT 2:26 pm 38 Comments

Hi, friends!

I am soooo excited to share with you a great deal we got on some old doors!

Ya’ll know that I love an old cottage/farmhouse feel in my home, and one of the ways I plan on creating that feel in our new addition is by adding old architectural elements.

The easiest way to do that is with old doors.

I love the look of old farmhouse doors.

So imagine my surprise when my husband came home from the Habitat Store with this stash!

I about peed my pants!

These babies are gorgeous!

And to make things even more exciting…guess how much he paid for these?…

NOTHING!   NADA!

Can you believe it?!

He was at the Habitat store picking up some used French Patio Doors for our master bedroom, and an antique door (the solid brown door in the picture below) for $100.00.  (The same patio doors sell for between $350-400 at Lowe’s!)

He ended up coming home with four more antique doors for free!  I explain the story behind them in my video…it’s a pretty cool story.

The white 5 panel wood doors will be used upstairs in the boys’ rooms.

They are exactly the type of doors I was looking for.  Look how much these sell for on ebay…

And some sell for even more than that!

My favorite door is this beautiful one…

This door is close to 100 years old.  Look at the beautiful detail on it…

We are hoping to use this door in our master bedroom, either as the bedroom door, or the bathroom door.  We are considering frosting the glass.

What would you use this door for?

And would you sand and paint the 5 panel white doors a new coat of white paint, or would you strip the paint and show the  natural wood color?

I am trying to decide what to do.  If you have any great inspirational pictures of old doors, please share them with me. :)

Anyway, here is the video I took the day we picked up the doors.  I was very excited about our “score” and had to share it with you.  (If you cannot see this video in your reader, please click on my post title to view it on my blog.)

REMINDER:

Best DIY Projects of August

linky party goes up tomorrow night.

Hope you can come!

**Because I feel like these doors were a simple blessing from God, who cares about every detail of our life, I am linking my post up to Richella’s linky party, Grace Imparted.

Kitchen Island Makeover by My Suite Bliss, PLUS a Word Art Giveaway!!!

August 26, 2011 AT 8:29 am 3 Comments

I am so happy to have Brittney guest posting for me today.  She has some great little projects to share with you,

plus a GREAT word art giveaway!

Be sure to click over to her blog to enter her giveaway, and say, “hi!”

Hello!  I am so excited and so lucky to be here today on Beneath My Heart!

My name is Brittney and you can find me at mysuitebliss.blogspot.com.

I love decorating.  In fact, I often stay up for hours in bed dreaming about my next project.  If you know me well, you know that I am always up to something around my house, and my blog is a journal where you can see all my projects.  My favorite part about decorating is recreating a million dollar look for less!

I am here today to share with you my most recent project . .

Meet my old kitchen island:

Meet my NEW kitchen island:

Here you can take a peek at how the process went down:

All I did was trim out the ends (home depot $20), paint everything white (Sherwin Williams white duck), add new drawer pulls ($Lowes 4 each), add corbels for a bar addition, and then add the walnut butcher block stained in midnight (greyloch cabinets $460).  I wish it took as long as it sounds.  A project that takes patience but well worth it!

Here is a photo that gives me inspiration in many ways…white cabinets, black board paint in creative places, an amazing chandelier, and of course the large EAT letters.

Here is how I created the word art for only $15.

I hope you were inspired today with a few of my suitebliss creations.

Please stop over and say hello and enter to win my House Rules sign!

Plus, you can follow me as I complete our kitchen makeover and more!

I hope to meet you all!

Thank you, Brittney!

Your island turned out gorgeous!

And I love your giveaway!  Can I enter?!

A Stenciled Shower Curtain Tutorial using the New Martha Stewart Decorative Paint Line!

August 25, 2011 AT 10:55 am 31 Comments

Hello, friends!

Thank you sooooo much for the over 100 sweet, uplifting, encouraging, loving comments you left on my blog post yesterday!  You guys are so precious to me. :)

I went to my physical therapist again yesterday, and she hooked me up with those electro-thingys  to help the muscles in my back relax.  I am feeling much better.  I am still overwhelmed with all of the things I still need to do, but I am taking all of your great advice and taking it one step at a time.  I’m gonna live in the moment and not be discouraged by unfinished projects or work.

Many of you suggested that I tackle one corner of my home at a time, and that’s what I have decided to do!  I’m not going to focus on how every square inch of my home needs to be remodeled. :)  I am going to start with one little section, and work on it until I am finished.  (Not including the addition.  My hubby will be continually working on that.) :)

So I am focusing on the boys’ bathroom for now.

We have already done a couple of things like removing the sliding shower doors and the moose head toilet seat.  :)

But we still need to remodel the vanity and paint the walls.

Today, I am going to show you a shower curtain I made for the boys’ bathroom using the NEW Martha Stewart Crafts Decorative Paint Line, brought to you exclusively by Plaid Crafts!

A couple of weeks ago, I got a huge box of Martha Stewart products in the mail.

It was a HUGE loot of goodies!

I was amazed by all of these cool products, and so were my boys!  (I had a hard time keeping them out of this stuff!)

The new Martha Stewart Line is available at Michaels stores in the US and Canada starting the last week of August.  I’ve heard some stores are already selling them. :)

There are over 160 different paint colors to choose from, and they work on ALL crafting surfaces including wood, metal, glass, ceramic, terra-cotta, and fabric.  They are also indoor/outdoor safe, and dishwasher-safe on glass.  That helps to take a lot of guess work out of buying paint, doesn’t it?!  Yay!

Another added bonus is the paints are non-toxic, so they are safe to use with children. :)

I decided to use one of the Martha Stewart stencils for my shower curtain.

I had a drop cloth (which was a curtain in my previous home) that I thought I could use for the shower curtain.  It was a 6 ft x 9 ft drop cloth.  Since the tub was about 6 ft across, this would be perfect.  I didn’t have to hem the sides or the bottom of the drop cloth.  The only part that I had to sew was the top! Perfect!

I used the Martha Stewart stencil brushes to do the job…

I taped the stencil to the bottom of the drop cloth with scotch tape because that is all I had.  But it got the job done!

Then I mixed some navy blue paint with Martha Stewart’s fabric medium and painted over the stencil.  This was the fun part!

I was hoping and praying that it would look good when I took the stencil off the material, and it did!  Whew!

I continued this same process all the way down the shower curtain until I was finished.  Then I ironed over the whole thing when I was finished to let the paint “set”.

And I love the way it turned out!

I KNOW you love seeing a picture of my toilet! :)

It only took me about 30 minutes to do this stencil project.

I used my sewing machine to create some button holes on the top of the shower, but I was hoping to find some cute shower curtain rings before I show you that part.

The possibilities are limitless with this line of craft products!

Look at the beautiful pillows that Jen at Tatertots and Jello created with her Martha Stewart Stencils!

You can see Jen’s tutorial and review of the Martha Stewart Decorative Craft Paint line  HERE.

My sweet in-laws are coming in this weekend, so I will probably not do anything else to the boys’ bathroom until next week, but I have a few things in mind.

And I am going to be using some more of these wonderful products from Martha Stewart and Plaid to help me!

If you are interested in trying out some of these products for yourself,  here is a link to a 40% off Michael’s coupon.

Have a blessed day!

Honesty Alert: Feeling Overwhelmed

August 24, 2011 AT 9:11 am 129 Comments

Hey Friends!

I hope you are having a great week so far.  :)

Today, I was hoping we could just chat…ya know, as friends.

I’ve been feeling overwhelmed lately.  Well actually, ever since we moved in June.

I absolutely love the land and location of our new home, but the home itself has been a difficult adjustment.  I can truthfully say that I dislike everything about the inside of our home (minus the addition).  The rooms are very small, the flooring is hideous, my kitchen is disgusting, storage space is limited, and most days I feel like I am living in a junk pit.

I do not like to complain on my blog because I want it to be a positive, uplifting place.  And whenever I start to complain about my circumstances, I feel like a brat.  I begin to think of people who are less fortunate.  Of children who would love to call my house “home”.  Of people who sleep on the ground rather than a bed, and who would never complain of a room being small.  Of children with hungry bellies that wouldn’t give a hoot about how ugly my kitchen was, but instead would be smiling as they discovered the food within it.

I really have nothing to complain about.

So why am I complaining to you?

Because I want to be real with you.

Every since we moved into our new home, I have been posting about all the projects we have been completing around our home.  I have been sharing videos of our hard work, and of some of the fun.  And you have left so many sweet comments.  Many of you ask how I get it all done?  How do I keep it all together?

Well, I don’t.

Last night, I was sitting on my couch crying.  Not bawling crying, just crying.  I had been to my physical therapist earlier that day, and my back was killing me.  I do not think I have ever shared this on my blog, but I have scoliosis in my back, and I deal with chronic back pain.

I had so much to do last night, and my back wouldn’t let me.  I felt defeated as I looked at the piles of “stuff” that still needed to be done.  Like all of this junk in front of my fireplace that I don’t have time to organize.

And this gorgeous antique buffet that I purchased at the Habitat Store a couple of months ago, but haven’t had the time to refinish.

And my back patio has just been storage for more junk and projects.  The theme song from “Sanford and Son” comes to my mind every time I look at it.

Adam and Eli’s closet door has looked like this since the day we moved in…

I do not even have the energy to share pictures of my kitchen and bathrooms with you.  :)

Should I even bring up the 200+ emails in my inbox that still need to be answered and taunt me every time I open my gmail account?

Everywhere I look, I am reminded of all the work I have to do.  It’s not a good feeling.

And oh yeah!  Let’s not forget that I am raising four boys!  Yowza!  There are baseball practices, piano lessons, homework, meals to cook, laundry, etc.

Ugh.   I feel so overwhelmed!!

And I needed ya’ll to know that.

I need you to know that I do NOT have it all together.  I need you to know that sometimes I just want to cry from all the frustration.

So what’s a girl to do?

Continue crying?

Eat an entire tub of ice cream?

Write an entire post about her woes and complain to thousands of people she has never met in real life? :)

Or Pray.

Seek God.

Read His Word.

Can you hear me preaching to myself?

I need to keep my life in perspective.

I need to keep my mind focused on what matters most.

That is not my  home.

Not my blog.

Not my DIY projects.

It’s my heart.

Am I seeking peace in Christ?

My mom’s favorite verse was, “Peace I leave with you.  My peace I give to you.  Not as the world gives, do I give to you.  Let not your heart be troubled nor let it be afraid.”  John 14:27

John 16:33 says, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace.  In the world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

Psalm 105:4  “Seek the Lord and His strength, Seek His face evermore.”

I want to share with you an excerpt from my devotional book, “Jesus Calling” by Sarah Young.

It is written like a love letter from God.  Here is what He is saying to me  today:

“TRUST ME in the midst of a messy day.  Your inner calm–your Peace in My Presence–need not be shaken by what is going on around you.  Though you live in this temporal world, your innermost being is rooted and grounded in eternity.  When you start to feel stressed, detach yourself from the disturbances around you.  Instead of desperately striving to maintain order and control in your little world, relax and remember that circumstances cannot touch My Peace.

Seek My Face, and I will share My mind with you, opening your eyes to see things from My perspective.  Do not let your heart be troubled and do not be afraid.  The Peace I give is sufficient for you.”

Ladies, please KNOW that I do not have it all together.  If I have ever portrayed that I do, I am sorry.

I’m just a wife and a mom struggling to handle all the responsibilities thrown at me each day.

But it is my prayer that I never loose focus on what matters most in this life.  And that I seek God to give me His strength and His peace in my heart.

Thank you for letting me share my heart with you today.

(I feel better already.)

:)

God bless you, sweet friends.

“The Stair Pitch Project”

August 22, 2011 AT 11:06 pm 19 Comments

Thanks to my husband, I am soooo happy to finally have stairs in our addition!!

I KNOW that I am so blessed to have married such an amazing handyman!

He  could really build this addition from the foundation to the roof, but since he has a full time job as a banker, that is NOT possible.  So has contracted out most of the work that has been completed so far on the exterior of the home, but will be completing the interior of the home by himself.

Every now and then, he calls for me to help him with something….

In the above picture, we were framing up the new wall that the stairs would be going up against.

Cy built these stairs this past Friday night.

He put some 2×4′s on the stringers as temporary treads.

To the left of the stairs, Cy studded up the entry to our new master bedroom (which I am soooooo excited about!)

Cy completed the stairs around 10:00 pm Friday night (while the boys and I ate popcorn and watched a movie.)

The boys were DYING to walk up the steps to see where their new rooms will be someday even though it was pitch black up there.

I video taped the moment and thought I would share it with you.

(I realize that I have been posting a lot of videos on my blog lately.  I am having fun shooting them, so I hope you enjoy watching them.  I think it will be neat for my boys to look back at these videos someday when they are all grown up.) :)

This video is “supposed” to be a spin on the movie, “The Blair Witch Project.”

FYI:  All family members are alive and accounted for, including the dog. :)

Pictures and (unedited) Video of the Soon-to-be Staircase

August 19, 2011 AT 11:36 am 12 Comments

Hey Friends!

Happy Friday!!!

I wanted to quickly show you some progress we have made on the addition to our home.

We now have the cut out for the stairs.

That is the wall that my new skirted desk was on just a week ago!

But now, this room leads into our new master bedroom, and it will be the place where the stairs begin to lead up to the boys’ rooms.

To make some head room for our stairs, and to save square footage upstairs, we decided to add a shed dormer to the top of the house.

Here I am showing Cy what it would look like…

We are “visualizers”.  We have to see something before we can decide if we are going to like it.  We were trying to decide on what type of roof line to use on the dormer.

And yes, Cy got on the roof too, so I would be able to “visualize” it. :)

Here is the shed dormer now.  It will have a dormer window in it and will be wrapped in the same hardy board siding as the rest of the addition.

I took some video of where the stairs will go because I think it helps you to visualize it better.

I have to warn you that this video is “raw”.  I didn’t do any re-takes or edit it.  I left my kids in it, and I may have had to stop and tell them to be quiet a couple of times. :)

Our dog, Champ, makes a cameo appearance too.

And of course, Eli sends some love messages to Layla again.  I think he thinks she is always on the other side of our video camera. :)

If you do not see a video below, you may need to click on my post title and view the video on my blog home page.

I’ve got a lot of projects planned for the weekend!  What are you going to do?  Work? Play? Both?

My Niece’s Adorable Nursery!

August 18, 2011 AT 10:12 am 17 Comments

Within the next couple of weeks, I will become a GREAT Aunt to my niece’s baby boy, Colt.

And I cannot wait!

Courtney has worked so hard in preparing a nursery for sweet Colt, and I wanted to share pictures of it with you.

I was so proud of the DIY skills she used to create Colt’s name above his bed, paint a chandelier white, and make custom shades for it.  Great job, Courtney!

She had the bedding custom made by a very talented family friend, Jenny.

Jenny is an amazing seamstress!  You should see the girls’ clothes she makes.  You can check them out on her blog, Savvy Stitches.

Jenny made the bedding, drapes, pillows, and the name sign hanging on the changing table.   Love it!

My favorite piece of furniture in Colt’s nursery is the children’s wardrobe dresser.  Because it’s mine! :)

This precious dresser was the first piece of furniture my husband and I ever bought over 12 years ago.  We got it at a second hand store and painted it white for my first son, Jonathan’s nursery.

We used it in all four of our boys’ nurseries, and to see it now in Colt’s room just makes me smile!

Courtney hung the word art sign that I made her over the dresser, and I think it looks perfect there!

boy nursery

It’s just such a sweet room, and it is already so full of love!

Courtney is going to be a great mom, and Chris will be an amazing dad.

Now come on, Colt!  We are ready for you!!!
