Filling up the boys’ stockings for Christmas is one of my favorite parts of the holiday.

Maybe because finding my Christmas stocking all filled up was one of my favorite childhood memories!
There is just something magical about seeing your Christmas stocking all filled up with goodies.
Click on “read more” to see what kind of goodies I found for my boys’ stockings!
So I was so excited when I was given the opportunity to spend a $25.00 gift card to Dollar General to help me fill up the boys stockings!
Yesterday, I went to Dollar General to see what kind of goodies I could find. Eli and Ana went with me.![]()
Ana is my precious neighbor whom I love spending time with! She likes to come down to our house and play with “the boys”.
She gets right out in the yard with them and plays football in her sparkly flats and bows in her hair! I love it!
With our Dollar General gift card in hand…
We went shopping!
Ana is a great shopper. ![]()
I love the “dollar section” because you can find all kinds of little goodies to put in a stocking. I found some cute tattoos for just a dollar that the boys will love.
They had a wide selection of puzzles. I grabbed a few of the $3 puzzles for the boys.
These games were too big to fit in the boys’ stockings, but I wanted to show you that they have some great ones. Operation is my favorite. ![]()
We filled up our cart and headed to the check out counter. I bought Eli some Lifesaver gummies and Ana some Snowman Cotton Candy (with my own money) for being such great helpers.
(Eli had no clue that we were buying things for his own stocking!
He was too distracted by all the toys to pay attention to what Mommy was doing.)
Now to the fun part!
I got to go home and fill up the stockings!
Okay, so I am not at MY home. I am actually at my dad’s house the whole weekend while Cy is home staining and polyurethane-ing the floors in the kitchen and den.
Yay!
So I laid out all the goodies from Dollar General in Dad and Janet’s laundry room floor to take some pictures.
Here are the tattoos that the boys are going to love!
I got the younger three some cool lenticular puzzles…
What is Christmas without some PEZ candy? ![]()
Jonathan is my 12 year old, and he is getting too big for toys. (So he says…)
So I got him this brown journal for $3 and some pens for $1. He loves to write and draw, so he will love this gift!
I found this cute little package of airheads with lip balm for just $2.
I also got a package of these marshmallow candy canes for $1. I love buying things like this because you can divide them up and put a little bit in each stocking.
I did the same thing with these Sixlets. (Which is one of my favorite childhood candies, btw.)
So, I got all of these goodies from Dollar General for $25…
Then I divided it all up between the 4 stockings…
I stuffed them up, and they are ready to go!
I have a few more things that I will add later, like socks and toothbrushes, you know…the usual. ![]()
But for now, I am thrilled with how much stuff I was about to put in each of their stockings with my $25 gift card to Dollar General.
What is your top money-saving tip for filling stockings?

Thanks for the great ideas for little boys. We (my 2 SILs and I) will fill 25 stockings this year. Every one from Gpa and Gma down to the new born baby girl will get one (hope Chloe arrives before Christmas) with a variety of goodies, spanning 89 years! Love it all! I just go around looking for practical little things for the grown-ups, travel sizes, etc. and fun stuff for kids. Then I put candy and peanuts in a baggie like the treat bags we used to get after our Sunday School program. Merry Christmas!
I love the idea of going to Dollar General. This year I am hosting my side of the family at our home for Christmas. While I am the youngest (no nieces or nephews yet) we still love stockings! My parents are bringing the stockings but I wanted to contribute too since it’s my house! I elected to get everyone new house shoes. I’m not sure that my stocking hooks with hold the stockings filled with shoes…we shall see. Thanks for sharing!
Fun post. My boys are grown, but stockings were always the most fun & memorable part of Christmas morning gift opening. I always did a new toothbrush & toothpaste for each boy. A few yrs. ago, I did not do it (they were all married) & they were all dissappointed. One of them said, “I just told C. (his wife) not to buy toothpaste, as Mom always gets us some for our stockings.” So that is a MUST for our Christmas stockings… all, even DIL’S all get new toothbrushes & each a tube of toothpaste in thier stocking… : )
I thought everything at the Dollar Store was a dollar?!? We have a Dollar Tree near us and I went there last week (in my cast on the way home from the doctor) and found the cutest ornaments to put outside in a hurricane or bushel. I need to go back and buy some more! I didn’t know I would LOVE them! I like to get “ziploc” bags there because at a dollar, they are so so much cheaper than those at the grocery store and do the same job. Half the time, I am not even storing food in them. I also found Disney puzzles for a dollar and I have seen them elsewhere for five or six dollars. My kids put their boots under the tree on December 6th for St. Nicholas Day and St. Nick puts a few dollar store goodies in their boots. I never used to frequent these stores and now I make a run once a month or more. It is also a great place for inexpensive classroom treats when you cannot send food to school, which is happening more and more frequently.
That’s Dollar Tree, the Dollar General is like a Woolworths or Value Village, everything is less but not a dollar per se.
So cute, and great ideas. Years ago my great-grandmother started giving her grown and married daughters “Santa Boxes”, since their stockings at their new homes seemed to get missed :(. She would fill a box with all kinds of goodies, mostly home made house keeping items. My grandmother continued the tradition, and my mother perfected it. My sister and I never know what will be in the Santa Box, it is the most anticipated gift of all, and always saved for last….usually everyone else has moved on to reading, playing, eating, but not Gwen, Mom and me. We savor this. I now have grown daughters of my own, who get, you guessed it, a Santa box. I can’t wait for this very special part of our celebration.
I love visiting the Dollar Store for stocking stuffers. Your money really goes along way there! You got some great things!
I shop all year round, so when I find a deal, I’ll pick it up and keep it in a tub especially set aside for gifts- it spreads the cost over the year rather than at one time. I also buy a set of something and divide it up- chocolate, for example. Once I have everything I wrap a lot of it up!
My secret so far has definitely been the dollar spot in Target. They have incredible books and goodies for little girls. The stocking part is the best part on Christmas morning. Your boys are going to have a blast looking at all of the goodies that await them:)
Great ideas! I have a question regarding stripping kitchen cabinets. In your spare time (sorry) could you email me and tell me what product you recommend?
Thanks.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Dollar General Store. It’s the number one stop for my shopping EVERY month. I save $3 a box on Septic treatment alone and I can buy 2 of their air freshner refills for the price of one elsewhere. I also buy all our toiletries there. Shopping at Dollar General certainly keeps my budget on track.
Yes, they have a great selection of things for the kids too! Happy to see that you were awarded that gift card. I know that certainly helped! Thanks for sharing.
Dollar General is the best! I even buy a lot of food there. I buy all greeting cards there too. Really can’t do Christmas shopping without DG. This year I got the cutest little riding toys for two little granddaughters for at least half of the price elsewhere.
Cute ideas. Thanks for sharing. Brought back a lot of memories of filling up stockings for my three children. I never was sure who enjoyed it more, them or me! Good times.
Holy Hot Dogs!!! I agree! Target’s dollar section is fantastic!
So funny, I was just in a Dollar General last week and thought that I’d have to remember to go back for stocking stuffers!
The stocking is the best part!! I need get my dollar shopping on! ;) Oh and I love love your new sink and countertops!
Stockings are always my favorite part of Christmas. My mom spends all year planning them. And I loooooove dollar stores/aisles for those items. MIchaels has a great dollar aisle for “big kids” like me! Many of the DG brand items (Clover Valley), are actually made at the same plants as name brands. They literally just go to a separate spot for packaging. Their fudgy mint and peanut butter chocolate cookies are actually Thin Mints and Tagalongs in a different box! (My husband works for DG corporate, which is how I know this…)
I hit the sales after Christmas when everything is being clearanced out after the first of the year & stock up. We don’t do stockings…my mom didn’t do it for us & I in turn have never done stockings for mine. I do however use my finds for our elf to bring…so instead of a stocking on Christmas morning they get little gifts from after Thanksgiving til Christmas Eve. I can’t wait til after Christmas this year…I love getting all the goodies for next to nothing. I usually spend $10-15 & get enough for both girls (I’ll have to have stuff for baby boy due in Feb) each day for 4 weeks!
I was interested to see what you did for your oldest child….seems like stockings would be easier when the children are little, but then what do you do as they grow. The journal was a good idea! :) I didn’t grow up with a stocking, but I would like to start that tradition next year when my Little One is big enough to enjoy it. Merry Christmas!
Hey would you mind letting me know which hosting company
you’re using? I’ve loaded your blog in 3 completely different web browsers and I must say this blog loads a
lot quicker then most. Can you recommend a good hosting provider at a reasonable price?
Kudos, I appreciate it!
