Look What I Found in my Shed!

The weather here is Kentucky has been unusually warm lately, and I have loved every minute of it!

I am so glad that Spring is finally here!

I’ve been “itchin" to do some Spring cleaning lately, but it’s kind of hard to do when you are in the middle of a major home renovation.  Smile

But one thing that I HAD to do quickly, because of the hot temperatures, was to clear out our winter clothing out of our closets and replace them with our Spring clothing.

For the boys, I was needing to head out to the shed and grab the tubs of hand-me-downs and go through them.  Luke gets Jonathan’s clothes, Adam gets Luke’s clothes, Eli gets Adam’s clothes, and Jonathan gets nothin’!  (He’s the lucky oldest child who always gets new clothes.)

When we moved in to our home last June, we literally threw a ton of stuff into our shed.  I had no time to organize it.

I don’t think I have ever shown our shed on my blog.  It’s nothing much to look at, is it?  It is painted the most hideous colors I think I have ever seen in real life!

We are hoping to do a little makeover on our shed this summer.  We’ll probably paint it to match our home.

Though our little shed it pretty ugly, it has been a huge help for us.  I don’t know what we would do without it!

Since I hadn’t organized the shed since we moved in, when I went out to find the tubs of boys’ clothes, I had no idea where they were.   I had to empty the shed of its entire contents to finally find the tubs I needed.

It was a total pain.

BUT it was beautiful outside, and it forced me to organize the shed.

When I opened the doors, my eyes quickly caught something in the back of the shed.

There are two tall wooden cabinets in the shed that were left by the previous owners.

I hadn’t really paid much attention to them because I figured they were full of junk or supplies.

But once I cleared everything out of the shed and got to look more closely at the cabinets, I found out they were completely empty!

They are dirty and need a new coat of paint, especially to cover up the little pictures of fruit on the front door…

But when I get my hands on these two cabinets, they are going to be PERFECT lockers for Jonathan and Luke’s room!

I love these wood lockers from Pottery Barn.  I could easily paint my cabinets and stencil a number on the front like these.

Or maybe wrap them in beadboard and add some cool handles…

I also think it would be fun to paint them a bright color like red!

Do you like the little surprise I found in the shed?

Do you think they will look cute in the boys’ room?

  1. Ok so just seeing inside your shed gave me an idea for me – THANKS!! I was out of town after Christmas and wasn’t able to purchase one of those handy-dandy wreath container thingies and my husband just kind of laid the wreath in the shed… duh, now I need to put up a nail & hang the wreath so it doesn’t get crushed. Why didn’t I think of that? :) Thanks for letting us see inside your shed! And I love the wooden cabinets.

  2. I love the idea of the red! Would be a great pop of color and with boys, wouldn’t show dirt so much :) Can’t wait to see what you come up with!

  3. Lucky lady! I wish I had an eye for things the way you do. I wish I could look at something and see what it could be. I’m gonna have to start praying for that gift! :)

  4. Great find. It’s amazing how we can overlook things. Can’t wait to see what you do! I hope I find a gem ln the rough around my house soon…I do plan on cleaning my attic after Easter. ;)

  5. Dude, how lucky!!! I’d love to find something like that in our shed. But it’s not happening :D Can’t wait to see what you do with them!

  6. Always nice to get that unexpected surprise! An added plus to make something pretty AND useful out of them. Win/win…more room in the shed now, too. Yay for you!!

  7. Traci~You always make me laugh! You also remind me of when my boys were smaller. I have four boys, and every Spring and Fall I would make them try on all the stored clothes. They would moan and groan but I loved it. I loved organizing their drawers and giving the hand-me-downs to the next smallest boy. It was like Christmas!! (for me anyways!). Great idea about the lockers. I love the look! Have a great weekend! ~Linda

  8. I was waiting for a critter to jump out at you! Well, what a nice thing for the previous owners to leave behind. Those lockers are great.
I just want to tell you how much I enjoy your blog. Always upbeat, positive and creative. You make a HOME, not a house. Big distinction between the two. Thanks, Sarah

  9. What a great find! However you decide to decorate them, I know they will end up looking amazing!

Our Matt is in the same boat as Jonathan, but the size difference between he and Daniel make it hard to keep things for future use. Daniel is just built so different, I don’t think he will ever be able to wear some of Matt’s things. Because Matt typically gets new clothes (even though I have always gotten them on good sales), he has this aversion to clothes already worn by someone else. I’m trying to break him of it, but he is driving me NUTS! :-)

  10. What an unexpected blessing! They will make perfect lockers for your boys! I like the pottery barn look the best. The white bead board lockers look a little too cottagey for a boy’s room. But if you painted the bead board a strong color, that would be nice, too. hmmm….

  11. I just love surprises. You could mix the two styles – the Pottery Barn with the bead board. I love your dedication to your mom. I lost my mom in September of 2006 and still miss her every day.

  12. What treasures! I love the white beadboard! Can’t wait to see what you do with them. I only had one child and he wore handmedowns from friends and relatives for most of his life. Though 22 now and out on his own, he appreciates new, but he has no problem with previously worn. I am so grateful and blessed by him!

  13. Those are too perfect. I couldn’t tell if they were wood or metal as i think that would influence any decision. It looks like there’s some nice old hardware already on them that I would definitely try to save. I do like the potterybarn ones best.
I kinda like the little decals, although they’re not very boyish or bedroomy. I think you should take a good pic before you paint them over. Lots of blogs post that sort of thing to use in other ways, as I’m sure you know. I’m currently trying to do the same thing with an old top to a Hoosier cabinet. I just think of the women that tried to pretty up their homes with such a thing. I’m glad you’re not such a romantic about that sort of thing or we’d never see any of your amazing and fearless transformations!
Can’t wait to see the end result.

  14. love your little find….and I have to admit, I thought you were going to show us a pic of a mouse or something. Phew! I am so glad it was the cabinets and not a mouse. LOL! I love your idea of lockers for the boys room. Very cool. I even think they would be awesome painted red or maybe even blue. So much fun when you can uncover something for free and dream about what to turn it into.

  15. I have to admit, I was kinda afraid to scroll down to find out what ya found….Ha ha! Then when I saw those cabinets I was HOPING they were empty!! GREAT find & they will make GREAT lockers for the boys room, you can even paint them in their favorite college/sports team :)

  16. Love unexpected treasure especially when they are free, For the boys I like you idea of red or bright color and paint fake locker air slats, maybe a number or name.

    Love your furniture redo photos.
