Dear Mom,

Dear Mom,

Three years ago today, I held your hand as you left your temporary home to live forever in the home your heart longed for, Heaven.

I think often about that day, Mom. I remember how our hearts were breaking as we stayed near your bed knowing our moments left with you were few.  I remember how your body was frail and how the cancer had taken its toll on you.  And yet, I remember you never looked so beautiful to me in all my life.

Even in your last moments on earth, you were such a witness to me.  In life and in death, Mom, you glorified Christ.  I still wanna be like you.

Mom, more than anything, I want you to know that your life continues to inspire and influence me.  In your passing, I have learned that a mother’s love never leaves her daughter’s heart.  I still hear you often giving me encouragement and words of wisdom.

I want you to know that all of those years that you poured your life into mine was not in vain.  It mattered, Mom.  Your love has left everlasting fingerprints on my heart.  So many times, I make decisions because I know “it’s what Mom would want me to do.”  So many times I make choices because I know “it’s what Mom would have done.”

You are not forgotten, Mom.

Every sacrifice you made, every tear you cried, every hug you gave, every shirt you folded, every meal you cooked, every prayer you prayed, every smile you smiled, every time you listened, every encouragement you shared…

Everything, Mom.

It all made a difference in my life.

And now as a mom of four, I think I truly understand the depth of a mother’s love.  And I often ask myself, “My mom loved me like this?!”

Sometimes I watch Eli as he naps, and I stare in wonder at his sweet little nose and long eye lashes.  And my heart wells up almost to the point of pain as I realize that I could never love anything more.

And then it hits me, “Mom loved me like this?!”

As I stress over how to make ends meet and provide for our boys, I wonder how you did it all, and I think to myself, “Mom loved me like this?!”

When I lay in bed and night and pray (and sometimes worry) about the future of my children.  How I wish I could shelter them from every pain in life and take away all their troubles.  And my heart aches because I know that I cannot do it all and I cry out to Jesus.  Then I wonder if you laid in bed at night and worried about me too?  And I can help but think, “My mom loved me like this?!”

Oh, Mom, I always loved you.  But as I get older and go through the stages as a wife and mother just like you did…I love you even more.

How truly amazing you were, Mom, and I “rise up and call you blessed.”

I know now why one of your favorite scriptures was “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.” 3 John 1:4

I found a letter from you, Mom.

mom 001

You wrote it to me in 1983.  I was 13 years old, and you were only 39.  I know we were going through one of those “mother/daughter stages” where we didn’t quite see eye to eye at times.

My Jonathan turned 13 just a couple of months ago, and I am 41.  He is going through a “wanna grow up” stage, and I feel like one of those moms that is always harping on their children about everything.  I desperately want him to know how much I love him, and I’m not trying to be so hard on him.

That’s why this letter means so much to me.  You went through the same struggles I am going through.

001

Mom, I am married and away from home.  I am happy and like myself. Smile

And guess what, I can look back over my life and say without a doubt,

“My Mother loved us kids with all her heart!”

Thank you SO much, Mom!

I love you,

Traci

  1. Traci – Your post brought tears to my eyes. I too, lost my Mother to cancer and it is so hard not to think every day “Oh, I need to call Mom and tell her this or that”. I still tell her so many things daily and I know she hears. But, to be a Mom is such a revealing part of life. We just don’t know a Mother or Father’s love until we are in that situation. And at that point, we KNOW the kind of love they had for us. And then to think of our Heavenly Father’s love – there’s no way we can comprehend that at any point in our life.

Thinking of you and your mother this day.

    Judy

  2. Traci…I shed tears with this post too. You touched my heart…cuz I miss my mom and my mother–in-law too! They were both so wonderful! But it also made me hope that my three girls will remember how very much I loved them, when I am gone from this world.

I have been following you and your sister since just after your mom passed on to heaven. And I remember the posts from when your dad remarried. I think you girls are amazing…and I love how much you loved your mom.

I pray for my kids and grandkids ALL the time. And I love 3 John 1:4 too.

Thanks for sharing your heart! ((Hugs)) to you as you remember your Momma today!

  3. Traci-
I am sitting here with tears streaming down my face from reading your post. I am fortunate that my mom is alive and well . . . but your post made me realize that I need to reach out to her more often. Too often we take those who love us (and who we love) for granted. Thank you for sharing such a personal part of your life.

    I needed to read this.

    Best,
    Stephenie

  4. Hello Traci – Wow your post brought back so many wonderful and awful memories as I too lost my Mom to cancer and stood at her bedside as she took her last breath. It totally changes a person to watch such a beautiful and loved woman be ravaged by such an awful disease. I miss her SO much and wish she was here with me as I battle the same horrible disease but without her. God Bless you and your family and know your Mom is watching down on you and you will see her again someday. Your children are lucky that you were so loved as a child that you now make them feel the same love and security in their home. Happy 1st Day of Fall!

  5. Traci, what a sweet letter to your mom and an equally touching letter to you. I welled up with tears reading your post thinking the same thing about my relationship with my boys and my mom’s with her daughters. I can tell that you had a wonderful mother because you are such an amazingly kind, caring, funny, creative and all around wonderful person!

  6. Tears are streaming down my face as I read this beautiful letter to your mom. I’m sure if she was here she would be so very proud of you. Thanks for sharing this with all of us. My mom reminds me so much of yours. A Godly woman and wonderful example to me. She will be 80 this year and shes adjusting to life after losing my dad this year. We all miss him so much but are grateful he is with Jesus… Just like your mom. Bless you sweet sister

  7. Thanks Traci for a beautiful and touching remembrance of your mother. I enjoy following your blog and the testimony of your Christian faith and the example of your mother’s love and devotion to her family and to Christ.

  8. Remember, someone is not truly gone if you remember them in your heart and thoughts .You can still give them a big hug in your mind. Just as you sadi,”My Mom loved me like this.” What a warm, lovely feeling that is.

  9. Traci, Thanks so much for sharing this precious letter. Lifting you up, praying for you and your family as you remember your mom. Love and blessings

  10. What a special memory of special times. We all have those moments when we feel we went to far at helping our children. Boy can I remember those days with my 3 girls. I hope some day they will know too that it was done out of love. You are blessed so much.

  11. Traci,
I am forever grateful to have met you briefly at Haven. Your love for your mother spills over in all that you do. She would be so proud of you and who you have become. These words to her made me cry like a baby…absolutely beautiful! I am praying for you today as I know this is a difficult day. What a legacy she has left and what a tremendous woman!! Bonnie :)

  12. My Mom has cancer and I know I will be facing this. She is on her fourth round of chemo and she is still optimistic and strong of character. It hurts to see her in pain. My mother is also a woman of God and has always been a strong influence in my life. Thank you for assuring me that her influence will always remain. Bless you as you go through the grief again at this time and bless you as you see the good.

  13. Hey babe–I know this day is still so hard. It will always be the anniversary of one of the hardest days of your life. But how wonderful that, even in the midst of the pain, you can think about what a wonderful legacy your mom left you–and how she taught you to be such a great mother! I am so grateful you had her as your mother, even though it was for too short a time.

How cool that she’s now celebrating having been face-to-face with Jesus for three years–or is it three days? Or three hours? Or three minutes? Won’t it be something when we’re all there together?

    Love you, friend!

  14. What a beautiful tribute to your loving mother and your relationship. Can we really ask for anything more than to KNOW we are loved?? Praying for you, Traci, on this day of remembrance of your sweet mama.
    xo Heidi

  15. Holding you close in my heart and sending you a big hug today, Traci. You were a blessing to your sweet momma and are a testimony of her love to your own children. May God bless you, sweetie. ♥

    xoxo laurie

  16. Traci, like so many, I have tears as I read this beautiful tribute to your precious Mother. As others mentioned, I too lost my Mom, it’s been thirteen years ago, but her influence on my life was so significant! My youngest sister suffered with cancer and left this earth also three years ago…my best hope is the thought of eternity with our Lord, after this life. My thoughts go out to you, especially today as you reflect on your Mother, and her beautiful life. Thank you for sharing.

  17. Beautiful post Traci! Tear are falling down my face. PTL we have the hope of salvation and seeing our loved ones again!

  18. Traci, I lost my Mom 3 years ago last month and there are so many times I begin to pick up the phone to tell her this or that. How I miss talking to her. My Mom became a believer shortly before she passed so I look forward to spending Eternity with her. Blessings on you.

  19. My Mother is an Alzheimer patient in a nursing home. It’s a horrible disease, and as I’ve been told many times, it’s the long good bye. After reading your post tonight, I realize how much my Mother cared for me. I think of all the times she gave advice and tried to make my life better than the life she lead when she was growing up. Sometimes, I took her advice, and sometimes I ignored her. OH, what I would give to have a “do over”. It’s wonderful to know you and your Mom had such a great relationship. Thanks for sharing. God Bless You.

  20. This blew me away tonight. There are four siblings living, one in heaven, we don’t always all see eye to eye but my sisters and I have that great love for one another.

You brought me to tears tonight thinking about them. I wish our brother was closer to us but it is his choice and it breaks my heart.

What a very blessed family you have. A true treasure your mother was and will always remain to you, your siblings and her husband I’m sure.

    Thank you for sharing.

  21. Traci,
You are a very special person. I feel very honored that you shared this wonderful tribute with your followers. It just shows how genuine and caring you are. Thank you for letting us cry together. You’re a wonderful daughter…. :)

  22. October 4th will be two years for me. I do just like you, though, and think of her all the time. She always encouraged me. She was my biggest cheerleader and I never, ever doubted her love for me. I wonder if my son sees me the same way. I guess each generation is left wondering the same thing, because Momma always wondered if she were as good a mother as HER mother was to her.

And by the way, I will never forget the encouragement you and Cyndi gave me that year at Relevant. I’m sitting here tearing up about it now! :) Thank you for being willing to listen to me! :)

  23. Beautifully written. I can identify with so much. My mom was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) when I was 10 and died when I was 15. Her strength in the Lord was amazing and inspiring through all that. She’d say “I have two choices. I can concentrate on living or I can concentrate on dying. I choose life”. Like you, my mom shaped me to be where I am today. I actually started blogging as a way to show my kids who I am and what we did. I hope I live a long time with them, but if I am to go Home early, at least they’ll have a lot to remember me by. :) My prayers are with you.

  24. Thank you Traci. My mom has passes and I look back so many times to wonder how she did all that she did. There were 7 children plus she worked at a factory to add to dads salary to be sure we had food on the table, clothes on our back and a roof over our heads. So many times I wish I could take back the grief we caused her. Thank you for sharing it brought back so many thoughts that I thought I had forgotten.

  25. Such a wonderful post, my my mom has been gone 11years this coming November and I do miss her so much even though time has gone by. Yes, I still want to pick up the phone and call her and tell her about how everything has turned out for me but I believe she knowes:)

  26. Very moving Traci….some people go thru life without even having someone special in their lives, but you were one of the lucky ones.
    Blessings

  27. Hi Traci,
Thank you so much for your letter to your Mom. I lost my Mom a week ago today and I’m still thinking about her all the time and thankful that she joined our family when I needed her the most. Betty married Dad when I was 17 and “knew everything”. Boy, did she have lots to teach me!!! She was the very best Mom I ever had and I always knew that I was truly loved (as well as knowing that Dad was TRULY loved).
Mom’s funeral was very simple and beautiful, just like she was. The Preacher read a poem that I’d like to share:
    “Save My Seat”
Many years ago my wife and I were attending a gospel sing in a large church. She said she needed to go to the ladies room and said, save my seat I’ll be right back.
Many years later I was standing by her bed and the nurse said it won’t be long and she’ll be gone.
As I held her hand and stroked her hair, I kissed her and whispered, Save my seat I’ll be along soon. Save my seat in that big room. Save my seat as I’ll follow you. Save my seat, I’ll need it when I see you. Save my seat next to you, I’m coming too.
Several months later as I stood by her grave, I reached out and touched her casket the last time. As I did it seemed I heard her say:
I’ll save your seat in my new home, I’ll save your seat so we’ll be together, I’ll save your seat at Jesus’ feet. I’ll save your seat til we meet.
As I walked away with people all around, I felt so alone, I just looked down.
As I turned to look back one last time, it seemed I could hear her say: I’ll save your seat for you some day. I’ll save your seat in your new home. I’ll save your seat again when we meet. I’ll save your seat at Jesus’ feet.

Isn’t it beautiful? Turns out my Dad wrote this several years ago. Thought you would enjoy. Thanks, love your blog.
    Sharon

  28. Your post was amazing, I too can sympothisze with you. I lost my mom also about 4 years ago. I was devistated being an only child. Shortly after her passing I had one of the biggest accomplishments of my life as a published childrens author/illustrator.I should have been thrilled but without my mom to share it with it was not the same. I can see you loved your mom unconditionally and thats what lets her legacy live on. Bless you

  29. Beautiful! Just beautiful! I lost my mom two years ago. I think she was a lot like your mom. I talk to her frequently while sitting on my back porch. :)

  30. How very touching! I wish I had written to my children and not just told them how much I love them. You can never go back but you can ALWAYS go forward! Thanks for sharing such a precious letter.

  31. This post spoke to me. I forwarded it to my 37 year old daughter. I wonder why we feel as though we fall short as mothers. How wonderful that you found that letter from your mom. I enjoy your blog even though I am old enough to be your mother. I am sure she was proud of you as I am of my daughters.Sorry for your loss.

  32. Thank you for sharing this! What a sweet tribute to such a wonderful mother! I feel the same way about my mom, who is also my best friend. I just love your blog!
    Sally

  33. Thank you for such a heart felt post. I am holding back tears as I write this. I have a very strong-willed 11 year old girl who feels like all I do is nag at her. Our relationship is rocky (to say the least), but I love her with all my heart. I pray that someday (soon!) she will see my love for her, and how much my heart aches for her to make choices that please God and will bring about His unending blessings.
Thank you again for sharing your mother’s letter. I pray our relationship is strengthened and she will come to the same conclusion as you, that I love her with all my heart.

  34. Traci so beautifully writtten. I lost my Mom to Cancer in 2005 at the young age of 65. Your words touching. I found the tears pouring down my face…hoping that my four precious children will feel this way as I do of the loss of both my dad (61) and my mom (65) years young. They were not perfect but they were mine and I was theirs. Miss them every day.

  35. Traci, you are amazing! And your Mom is smiling down on you and VERY proud of the woman you are! Thank you for letting us read your letter to your Mom. Precious!

    Susan A.

  36. This is a beautiful post Traci…. makes me want to appreciate my mom all the more! I thank God for Godly, wise Moms (and Dads of course too). Thx for sharing this! Much love!!

  37. Oh Traci, can it really be three years? I share your pain of losing a parent, and once again I thank you for being such an example of grace and dignity. Your dear mom must be so proud of you as she watches over you and your family!

  38. Traci–
You and your mother are witnesses to God’s love and grace! Thank you for sharing these most personal and intimate details as a testimony for others! I know your mother is smiling on you, as she must be so proud of the woman that you are–a woman who is always seeking Him for understanding! How wonderful that we will be with our loved ones again in His most perfect kingdom!!! Your words are so pure and honest, Traci–thank you for that!

    With Love!

  39. Dear Traci,
This was very precious to me. Thank you for sharing. As my last daughter prepares to leave and get married I pray that all my girls will one day understand the depth of my love for them. Your words are beautiful and I was blessed to read this.
    Love,
    Linda

  40. As I read your post this morning, everything about it makes me think of my mom. How blessed we are to have had such a wonderful, Godly role model! My mom passed away nine years ago with cancer. She too had the most amazing faith in Christ, she lived and died that way. You and I have so many similarities. I too have four boys and share the same name, Tracie. I enjoy reading your blog, Thank you for sharing.

  41. I love you, Traci. You have no idea how this letter to your mom made this mom feel. I pray that my children can look and did look at me through the same eyes you see your mother through. Thanks for sharing this very personal and wonderful letter.

  42. What a lovely letter to receive from your mother. I can’t believe it but I have been following your blog for 3 years. I remember Wednesdays With Wonda.
God bless you and keep your family.
    Kelly

  43. I’m so sorry for your loss… I too lost my mother to cancer just last year and tomorrow is her birthday… I see in the comments that many have the same experiences as I am, and it’s reassuring to know that I’m not the only one with those thoughts… Thank you for your post.. May God continue to give you the grace and comfort that only He can… – M

  44. Dear Traci,
What a special memory. It brought tears to my eyes. It is just a beautiful tribute to your loving mother and to your relationship with her. We all have those moments. A beautiful and touching remembrance of your mother.

My mother passed away this year in March 23, 2012, to ALS (Lou Gehrigh’s Disease) like the Titanic ship…I stood by her bedside as she took her last breath. Out of tears I saw her sinking as I watched her pass away. My heart was broken, I wanted to believe she would stay…It broke my heart to loose her, part of me went with her. Sadly her life was robbed away and me. The pain is heartwrenching. I know she wants my heart to go on, but it really totally changes a person to watch such a beautiful, full of life and loved woman be ravaged by such an awful disease. God bless you Traci and your mom.
