DIY Owl Tree Topper

Hey Friends!

Last week, I told you about my Home Depot Style Challenge post that went live on The Home Depot Apron blog.

I was given the opportunity to decorate a tree with ornaments from The Home Depot.  I fell in love with the Martha Stewart “Winterberry” line.

It had the cutest little owls in that collection.

But I didn’t like the tree topper that came with this set.

I couldn’t decide on what type of tree topper to put on my tree.  I have always had very traditional tree toppers like stars and angels, but I wanted to do something different with this tree.

A couple days before my post was due, I found this cute little red owl at Home Goods for $7.99.  It was just a table decoration, and I bought it because I thought it might be cute on the table beside my tree.  {I forgot to take a “before” picture.}  Smile

But then I sort of wondered if it would be a cute tree topper?

So I had Cy cut off the glass bottom of the owl…

When I sat him on the tree, I felt he was kind of missing something…

So I took some white feathers and hot glued them to the bottom of the owl.

When I stuck him on top of the tree, I thought he looked adorable!  He’s sitting on his pretty feathered nest!

He’s the perfect little touch to the top of my tree!

Now he proudly perches upon our Christmas tree and keeps an eye out for who is being naughty or nice!

So you see, something doesn’t have to be an actual tree topper to sit upon your tree.  Smile

If you see something you love, see if you can turn it into your own personal tree topper.  It will be sure to be a one of a kind!

Have you ever used something

different or  unusual

for the top of your Christmas tree?

  1. Hey if I can have turtles on top of my wedding cake- you can have an owl on top of your tree! I LOVE It!!! We just got a Home Goods store this summer. :) It’s 2 doors down from Tuesday Morning and 5 doors down from TJ Maxx with a bagel shop and Trader Joes in between. :) Guess I know what I’m doing today… :)

  2. Perfect and very creative. You know you inspire when someone finishes reading your post and immediately starts looking around to ‘see what they have’ lol I think your little owl is way cute sitting up there on his fluffy little nest:)

  3. Oh my gosh! I have that owl! I bought him on clearance for $3 about 2 years ago at TJ Maxx. He was kind of an ugly green metalic color, so I spray painted him red and put him on top of the refridgerator. Too funny!

  4. I love it Traci! So cute!!! My SIL and BIL top their tree with a top hat. It’s totally them and looks so cute!

  5. I just bought a snowman’s head with scarf and top hat on a stick . Sounds ugly but it’s cute. I plan on sticking that in top of my tree and going with a Snowman themed tree wrapped with wide red and green ribbon. I plan on using white lights on the mantel underneath some type “fake” snow and putting my snowmen on display. Thanks for getting my creative juices going! I have a glass, gold and Angel tree in the living along with my Nativity scene. Love your blog. I follow your sister’s blog, too!

  7. This is an absolutely gorgeous tree and decorations. You’ve definetly inspired me to think outside the box (um angel, star lol). Thank you so much.

  8. Last year, as a shut in who also has a traumatic brain injury I cannot drive to get out and I’d been very sick with complications. My husband got very sick with pneumonia so no Christmas boxes came down from the attic either. I became quite challenged. As a disabled person, i have to use much brain power to solve a problem of such magnitude! Someone used a large aluminum pan for a part of a meal for us so I cut out a long star and a smaller one to put on top of it for stability. I cut part of the leftover aluminum in a loop and used packing tape to attach to back of star. This allowed the star to fit on top of the tree. I also had bits of a gold doily left from ornament making that went around the inner star. I poked holes and attached battery tea lights to poke through front to sparkle. To support the added weight of the tea lights, I taped a couple skewer sticks also to the back of the star and poked them into the tree. I used my Dads pile of old cotton socks I bleached and cut into strips and tied to make garland, using a crystal to dangle at each knot–this leftover from my daughter’s wedding decor. I used my copier and shrunk down Christmas hymns from my 1918 hymnal–perfectly aged! I used glitter glue around the edges. I used unusual items that became quite elegant. My family, my husband…who knows my mental struggles, wept as he never imagined beauty from darned socks and snippets of this and that. My husband has surgery again so ill be reusing my crafted decor..praising God for the birth of His Son. Oh!! That aluminum star needed more sparkle so I used my wedding veil and jeweled crown upthere to with a hand painted in gold small banner saying Christ The Lord is Born

  9. He is Soooooo cute, Traci! I just got my Grandin Road catalog yesterday and it’s got some awesome owl Christmas decor but too steep for me — you’ve inspired me to find something I can DIY-tweak!

  10. Unfortunately we don’t have a Home Goods store in our lovely state….been hoping they would see the error in their ways and put one in near us.

  11. Traci, you are too much…who would think to put an owl? I LOVE it!!! You have my head spinning with ideas now that maybe I could use for my tree topper. I am so tired of my old one. The white feathers underneath him…just set it off.

  12. Too funny! My Mom & Dad have used an owl as a topper for years and we followed suit a couple of years ago (once I found one that would work made from styrofoam & feathers). I never thought about using a glass one. Great idea!
