Gutting our Guest Bathroom

Well, a few weeks back, I showed you the picture of our {future} guest bathroom shower.  It was after my second son, Luke, decided to stand on the tiled soap dish holder in the shower tearing down the soap holder and half of the tiled wall.

Oops.

Shortly after that, Cy “went to town” on that bathroom.

I was sitting in my room when I heard an awful racket.  I ran across the house to see what was going on, and I found Cy ripping out the vanity of the boys’ bathroom.  He had already removed the toilet without me knowing.

Doesn’t he know I need “before” pictures?!!!

So I don’t have a picture of the bathroom before he took the toilet out.

I had to grab my cell phone real quick to take some pictures because the battery on my Nikon was dead.

{He had already put up some green board around the tub a few days earlier.}

There was an ugly light above the mirrored medicine cabinet that Cy had to remove.

Then we got rid of the sink top.

Now, I know y’all are wondering why in the heck I would get rid of such a beautiful vanity!  Well, ladies…I just have a hankerin’ for something new.  Smile

Cy unscrewed the vanity from the wall and yanked it out with a crow bar.

After he removed the toilet and vanity, he used a shovel to get up the several layers of linoleum.

It smelled horrible!

But the bathroom was completely gutted and ready for a re-do!  Woohoo!

Lastly, he installed some water resistant hardi backer board around the shower.  This will help prevent mold and mildew behind the tile that we install soon.

So that is where we are at! The bathroom has been like this for several weeks because Cy has been so busy trying to finish our staircase and the upstairs of the addition.  We really hope to get the boys in their new rooms before Christmas.

I am very excited about getting this bathroom finished. For now, I am planning on installing white subway tile in the shower and creating a plank wood wall.  Cy will be making us a custom vanity using some left over butcher block from our kitchen.

Can’t wait to share the process with you.  Smile

Have a blessed Monday!

  1. Ooo! Cant wait to see the finished product. I am wanting to do subway tile for our shower in the basement but we are a looooong way from that right now :) The custom vanity sounds like a perfect way to use up materials you already have – we try to do that as much as possible as well! Happy Monday!

  2. I know it’s going to look great when it’s all done! I’d love to gut our main bathroom, but had to make due with just a face lift. Our vanity is as ugly as yours was, but I tried to disguise it for now with paint and new hardware. Can’t wait to see yours all beautified!

  3. He was probably thinking “I’m gonna do as much as I can before she realzies and comes running in here with her camera!” LOL!
I wish my hubby had more time to do things around the house. As it is we have every night this week full with birthday parties for kids at church and other church stuff. Looks like fun! :)

  4. I’m planning on doing this next spring and can’t wait. I intend to do the demolition myself. I just love tearing out stuff. Then, I’ll have to have some help putting it all back together. ha. Keep up the good work.

  5. Looking forward to seeing what Cy creates with the butcher block for the vanity. You mentioned barnboard in there somewhere. That won’t be an issue with it being in the bathroom will it? You know, all the moisture. I think it sounds cool and can’t wait to see what you all do.

  6. It will be so nice when you are finished. Yes, our children can do the unexpected. I remember when my kids had a water fight with a hose inside the house while we were at a bible study! Of course we had a babysitter but apparently she joined in. Sigh….

  7. I’d like to gut my whole house. Is Cy passing through Ohio any time soon? LOL. No I really need to do something with my small kitchen but unlike Cy my husband is not that talented. Keep up the great work. I don’t know how all of you find the time to do what you do. Are you still teaching? You make me tired just reading your blog. God bless.

  8. You have the exact layout of our guest bath. We just finished remodeling ours too. Can’t wait to see how yours comes out!

  9. Wow Tracey! You are truly blessed to have a wonderful husband who is willing to go to work all day and still have the energy to come home and make it even more beautiful. Glory to God for him and your beautiful spirited boys. I always enjoy seeing what yall r up to..
