The Storm before the Calm

I had a comment from a reader yesterday that made me laugh.

Haven’t read anything about your home remodel in awhile. Just curious, what is going on with the master bedroom and the boys rooms. Also, it would be fun to see your family room.

Ya wanna see why I laughed?

Well, sweet Deborah E, here’s my family room…

 {Please do not stop following my blog after seeing this.  I promise it will get better.  hee.hee.}

You asked.  Smile

We are in the midst of FINALLY moving the boys out of their small rooms into their new rooms upstairs!  But in the meantime, that means a lot of stuff in transition.

We’ve been having a big family slumber party in our bedroom!

The boys love it!

I moved their stuff out of their old rooms so I could get the walls painted and get those rooms ready to be a playroom and office.

So this is our STORM before the CALM.

Sometimes when you are renovating your home, it has to get REALLY messy before it gets cleaned up, ya know?

But I am so happy with this mess {except that it is the week before Christmas}, because it means we are thisclose to getting the boys in their rooms and getting our house almost finished.

It’s a little humbling to show you this mess, but it is what it is.

I am happy to report, though, that as of today most of this stuff has made it way into it’s new home.

The mattresses and dressers are now upstairs, but nothing is decorated downstairs.

Oh well, we are getting there.

Hopefully, I will be able to have some decorating fun in 2013. Smile

The boys did not want to use their bunk beds in their new rooms, so I have two for sale.

If you are interested in either, and live in central Ky, just email me and let me know.

This was Adam and Eli’s bunk bed.  It was in my mom’s house in the “grandchildren’s room.”  It is a twin over twin and has a trundle to go with it.  I think the trundle has a wheel that has come up.  We didn’t need it, so it is in storage.  I am asking $300 for it.

This is the dark walnut twin over full.  The safety guard rails on the top bunk are broken and need to be fixed, but other than that, it is in good shape.  I am asking $200 for it.

  1. Although I’m not a home decor blog, I HAVE put a couple of pictures of my home but mostly only when things have been a bit messy.

Once my hubby asked “Does everyone just take pictures of their mess and put it on their blogs?”

I said “Pretty much!” But then I laughed and told him no. He just sees me taking crazy pictures so I guess that’s what he’s going by, lol!

  2. Do you know what I loved most about this post? All of your kiddos camping out with you in one room made me so nostalgic for the days when my children were young enough to crawl in bed with us. Now they are grown and gone and it would be heaven to have them little again for even just a day. Of course, I realize this isn’t optimal on an ongoing basis but, enjoy that togetherness while you can. Merry Christmas to you and yours and I just love what you are doing to your home.

  3. Traci, I’d take finishing a major project like yours over decorating any day and I love Christmas decor! Just for the record, my kitchen/hallway/living room looked like that when I cleaned out my office (part way)! Still have things to move in/out of there!

  4. Well, BLESS YOUR HEART! I just chuckled when I saw these pics — just a slice of real life for ya! You have all been so patient and persistent in this remodel — I know it will pay off when you have things just the way you want them. In the meantime, it looks like a very Merry Christmas for your fam. Blessings, Traci!

  5. Traci,

I’m sure the boys are loving the bedtime adventure.

I was wondering if that was the case……….trying to accomplish two or four projects at a time!

Thanks for being a sport and sharing the REAL life version of your home remodel.

  6. I can soooo empathize with your situation. Shortly after moving into our home, we have water damage to our wood flooring that lead to moving out of the main living portion of our home for about 3 weeks. No fall decorating, but it was so worth the hassle, dust, and hallway full of furniture! The light you see is at the end of the tunnel, and is NOT a train!

  7. I love that you have a Christmas tree in your bedroom and that the boys are camping out in the bedroom with you. What wonderful memories you are creating for them! Our kids still talk about when we moved into our new house the week before Christmas, and the first thing we did was move in a Christmas tree and decorate it. Thank you for sharing real life on your blog. Merry Christmas!

  8. I can sooo relate. I just got my pantry out of my dining and living room! Yoiks! I mentioned how much help your blog regarding your kitchen remodel was to me on my blog recently…just in case you were interested. Thanks!!!

  9. Traci-
Even your “mess” looks pretty! Love the hard wood floors, maybe those make it look beautiful too. Did Adam know you’d be taking pictures, or does he always make his bed :) What a fun, close family “camping” out while you renovate! Reminds me of my childhood and I don’t think we renovated anything.

  10. I love this! Oh my, how nice it is to see we all go through the messy phase, before we can reach our destination of having everything in its place. We finished one big renovation in our living/dining rooms, and just when it was all pretty, we decided to renovate our den and turn it into an office…so guess where all the den stuff ended up? Yup, in the pretty living room, ha! We just finished the office, so now we just have to get all the stuff out of the living room. Merry Christmas to you, your family and to all of your lovely readers!

  11. I loved this post too. Makes me feel better knowing all you creative bloggers don’t always have everything picture perfect. Seems I work like crazy to get everything just so and it only lasts a little while … then it’s time to do it all over again. But then, that’s what I love about having a home. I’ll never complain about having to clean, repair and update. I am so grateful to own a home…be it ever so humble.
Merry Christmas to you and your beautiful family.

  12. You are a precious soul to show us the “in-transition” photos! My remodeling project has so over-whelmed me that I haven’t put a Christmas tree up yet! (and probably won’t, since it is just me & Hubs)

    Merry Christmas Traci!

  13. I loved this post! I love that you are humble enough to show us your mess before the calm. This is why I love your blog so much! This is real life in the midst of moving, remodeling and adding on an addition to your house, not to mention being a wife and mother, it’s messy not perfect (yet), but I love that it’s the week before christmas and you have dressers in your living room… All I can say is thank you for being so real with us!!
