{Craft} Closet Makeover
I have finally finished my craft closet makeover! Woo to the hoo!
It has taken me a little longer than I had originally planned because of that “little” surgery I had a few weeks ago. {wink}
But thanks to Lowe’s I was able to get the materials I needed to get it finished. I am so excited to be a part of the Lowe’s Creative Ideas Creators and Influencers network!
Here is what my closet looked like less than two weeks ago…
And here it is now!…
So much bettter!
It all started with taking everything out of the closet and removing the header.
Cy helped me with this part. I wanted to open up the closet so it was easier to reach the top shelf and so it wouldn’t look so much like, well…. a closet.
Eventually, we are going to pull up all of the old carpet in this room, so we decided to go ahead and remove the carpet from our closet before we built our shelves.
Eli helped with the clean up.
Next, I painted the closet the same color as the rest of the room. It is called Natural Choice by Sherwin Williams, but I always have them color match it at Lowe’s and use Valspar.
We went to Lowe’s to buy some shelving pieces and decided to use these…
We decided to build shelves to hold some baskets on each side of the closet. When we nailed these pieces together, we made sure that we used wood glue as well in between the pieces to make sure that the hold was strong.
We bought some pegboard from Lowe’s and covered the back and side walls with it.
Then we were able to place the first shelf right on top of the pegboard and 1×2’s.
I wanted to go a little out of my comfort zone and pick a bright color to paint the pegboard. I will with Caribbean Holiday by Olympic.
I LOVE this color!
I bought 6 corbels from Lowe’s and painted them white using my favorite Valspar paint in Satin White.
To make the shelves look a little more custom, we added trim work to the front of them.
After a lot of filling nail holes, caulking, and painting, the closet was ready to be organized and decorated.
To help me organize my craft supplies, I bought the following pegboard organizer kit from Lowe’s…
Blue Hawk Metal Pegboard Organizer Kit
It is so nice to have all of my supplies out in the open.
Now I don’t have to waste time searching for supplies when working on a project. It is all within plain view.
I really like the decorative touch that the corbels I bought at Lowe’s give to the shelves.
I wanted to be sure to add a cute pendant light to my closet, so I bought this Edison Light from Lowe’s.
Here is the link to this light…
Allen + Roth 6-7/8-in W Edison Style
Mission Bronze Mini Pendant Light
Oh, we also painted the subfloor with white paint. I am planning on painting the wood floor in the rest of the room as well {eventually.}
I am also wanting to put a stool in the space in the middle of the closet. However, I have yet to find the type of stool I am wanting to use.
But for now, I am thrilled with my new craft closet!! There’s nothing better than feeling more organized!
Let’s check out the before and after again!

This looks amazing! I have a scrapbook room which is wonderful, but I’m blogging so much I don’t have time to use it for what I intended!
I hear ya! I feel the same way sometimes. :)
You did such an awesome job! I’m so tempted to do this to my guest bedroom closet.
Thank you, Mary Anne!
Let me know if you do!
Traci
What a dramatic makeover! I love that you took stock pieces and created a custom built desk and storage area… and I love the pop of color!
Thank you, Holly!
Looks awesome, so organized. Love the pegboard color.
Thank you, Elizabeth!
This is exactly what I want to do in my 3rd bedroom but there is no way I would be able to do 80% of that on my own. But this is a great inspiration…. maybe I can save up to pay someone to do it?
Yes, it really wasn’t that hard. I could have done it by myself, but Cy has his tools with him during the day {and he is a lot quicker than I am!} :)
So funny, I have a Sie, too… and he has his tools with him during day, also, or I’d totally do this! I’m excited to do this in our shared office/scrap room. Thanks for sharing… it’s absolutely brilliant!
Wow! What an awesome makeover! I love it! It turned out so great! It looks very useful and very pretty! Thanks for posting the step-by-step photos of what you did. It’s great to see how you did it in case we do that in the future. Congratulations on your makeover! Enjoy!
Thank you, Cheryl!
I am glad that you find the steps helpful. :)
Traci
Wow! It looks so fresh…love it. You did an excellent job.
Thank you, Rachel! :)
Love this Traci! It looks fantastic!
Thanks, Beth! I linked it up to your par-tay! :)
I really like your idea of removing the header. I will have to remember that as I’m seriously considering doing this very thing to a closet of mine. Your space is beautiful in it’s organization and function. And I’m in love with that light!! Well done, Traci. :)
Thanks, Rachel! Removing the header makes a huge difference. It makes access to that upper shelf so easy now.
:)
Traci!! I love your new space It’s amazing!! The colors are so fun and I love the light you put in too!!
I’m working on a little organizational wall right now and am doing a round up of my favorite inspirational craft spaces tomorrow. I would love to feature your nook. I hope that’s ok. Love it!!
xoxoxo
Of course you can! ;)
Thank you!
Traci
Oh my gosh, I love it and now I want to redo my whole craft ROOM like you did. I’ve been wanting to get a pegboard for a while now, and had no idea that they sold whole kits like that – I’m going to do a little rearranging thanks to you! Can’t wait to see you again at Haven!
Thanks, Heather! I am looking forward to seeing you at Haven too! Not too far away. :)
That is such a perfect use of space….you did an awesome job. LOVE the color!!!
Thanks, Leann! I am loving the color too. It is so different from the rest of my “neutral” house. :)
Woo, girl! You outdid yourself on this one. I love, love all the details, now you make me want to do a craft area like this. I might have to do something in my mudroom/laundry room. You pulled this one together SO cleverly. Love, love it all!! The colors are so cute too.
Thanks, Rhoda! I love the way it turned out. I hope I can keep it organized. :)
LOVE IT! Removing the header is a fantastic idea!!
Thanks, Sonya! I’m so glad I removed the header. It really opens the space up. :)
Thanks for stopping by!
Well done Traci! Loved your little helper too :)
Color makes it so much more interesting. One question,
What is in the bottom center of the area ?
Great job! :)
Hey Lisa,
There is nothing in the bottom center area right now. I was going to put a stool there, but I think I want to cover it up with a small drop cloth curtain and store my “uglies” under there.
We’ll see…
I pinned it Traci! I love the bright color with the white. Such a beautiful space.
Thanks, Beckie! I am so glad I finally got it finished! So glad I got to go shopping with you at IKEA too. Your friendship is a blessing.
xoxo
What a transformation! How exciting is it to be able to actually see what you already have?! I can’t tell you how many times I have forgotten that I already have something and end up with multiples;)
Me too, Jess!
I am always buying doubles of things! I am so glad that my supplies are displayed in a way that I can see them now.
Thanks for stopping by!
Traci
Wow, you must be so excited with your new space! Looks great :)
Yes I am! I love it! :)
Thanks.
AHHH – MAZING!!!
I LOVE that color blue that you used for the peg board. GOOD JOB TRACI & CY & ELI!!!!
Marilyn C.
Thank you, Miss Marilyn! ;)
What about a stool with a “bicycle seat” type of seat? Make sure it’s comfy/ergonomic ; crafting shouldn’t be a pain! I know that when I get into a groove, I lose all track of time.
Great transformation, and a high five to your helper!
Thank you, Cathy! I love those type of seats, good idea. But now I am considering making a little curtain to cover that area so I can store my “ugly” supplies.
Not sure.
:)
Traci
Wow! Now THAT’s a makeover!!! What a great space to create beautiful things in! Great job!
Thank you so much!
Wow~ what a transformation!! I am jealous :)

That looks so great!! I bought those same storage boxes from Ikea and love them- they look so nice! oh and ps… I am drinking a large McD’s coke while I read this:)
Oh, Bee!
You are a girl after my own heart! LOVE IT!!
xoxo
Wonderful use of space and I love the colors! Great job!!
Thank you so much!
It looks amazing!!!
Thank you, Jennifer! :)
Beautiful makeover! I love the wire baskets you have paint in, are they from Lowes too? GREAT job!
Thanks! I got them at IKEA. :)
What an amazing transformation! I love the light and the colors you picked. It looks fantastic!
KC
Thank you, KC!
Fabulous! What a great job. Another gold star for you, your hubby, and helpers! Oh, and Lowe’s too…..
Thank you, Diane! We are so pleased with how it turned out. :)
I LOVE it Traci!! You did a great job and I love the color of blue you chose! So fun, fresh and organized!
Thank you, Amy! I am super excited to have this project finished! I have been wanting to do it for a long time. So thankful to be working with Lowe’s now so I can get some of this stuff done. :)
For some reason this is one of my favorite redos. I mentioned in your original post that I was surprised you didn’t follow trend with a striking interior colour. I love that you did in the end and adore the colour you chose. This should be in a magazine.
Cool! I am so glad you like it so much! I definitely wanted to use a fun color in this room since it is kind of “my” room. My oldest son said, “Wow, Mom! Look at you taking chances!” when he saw the teal painted peg board. It made me laugh. They know I’m a neutral kind of gal.
Thanks for your compliments.
:)
Traci
Oh my gosh Traci!!! That turned out so great :) I know you must be so happy with it. Congratulations, and happy crafting!
Thank you, Kitty! I do love it. :)
Thanks again for the inspiration Traci! Your closet really turned out great. I need to get to my office closet and soon! Love the brackets and blue peg board. Hope you don’t mind if I copy!
Not at all! Copy away! :)
I love the colors use those and the light fixture!! This space is so clean and organized, how inspiring!

Thank you, Tanya!
Oh my gosh, that closet is beautiful! My studio closet is a mess. I may have to borrow some of your ideas!
You are welcome to them! :) Thank you!
Wow, your closet looks amazing! I love the idea of using peg board in the closet, just may have to do that in one or three around here. :)
Thank you, Sheila! The peg board is so practical, but I was hoping to make it a little pretty by painting it teal.
I love being able to see all my supplies!
Thanks for stopping by!
Traci
What a great before and after, Traci! I love how bright and cheerful it is!
Thank you, Lisa!
TRACI! This turned out fabulous. If I could copy and paste it into my office closet, I totally would.
:)
Thank you so much, Shayna! :)
I LOVE IT! You did a fantastic job! I converted one bedroom into a craft room. Both the closet and room I use for sewing and crafts. Unfortunately the room also has to be used as a spare guest room for when company comes. So there’s a big queen bed in there too. I’m hoping someday to get a daybed w/ trundle to replace the queen bed. Will take up less room and make more room to be creative! I just love what you did. I just may need to use some of your ideas and update my closet.
Thank you, Melody! I am thankful that I can use this room just for crafting and blogging. I know how it is to have to use a room for more than one purpose. It’s not always easy.
Thanks for stopping by!
AMAZING!! I love this!! The turquoise color you chose for the pegboard is gorgeous!! Great job guys!! :)
Wow. Fabulous color. Unfortunately for me, I have a room not just a closet. I need time and funds..but you have provided the inspiration. Thanks.
That is really awesome. I like it. I don’t know how you got the nerve up to cut the wall but the end result is fantastic. I would have been a nervous wreck!! The corbels was a really nice touch…I love them.
Wow! What a makeover, I love it!! :)
I really love your craft closet. The colors that you chose are just perfect. You said you are going to paint the floor white, are you going to leave it that way? I want to take up the rug in my spare room and I can’t decide what do with the floor that won’t cost too much. Your little helper looked so serious about his job. God Bless.
That is crazy awesome, Traci! It looks like a budget friendly project, too — do you mind sharing what you spent on it? Love the punch of color. :)
xo Heidi
I love love love it!!
Great job!
That is amazing! The lighting is my favorite.
total closet envy! what a great space!
Wow! Beautiful job. So neat and colorful and easy to use at the same time. Congrats on a great job and inspiration for the rest of us.
Love you new craft nook. I want to do something similar to the closet in my sewing room, and will send you pics as I get it done.
OMG I am loving this!!!!!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE it! Pinning to the bhg board
This project is amazing! I am definitely going to pin this to use! Thank you!
Oh…LOVE LOVE!! What a great use of that space Traci!! ;)
Your craft space looks fantastic, I can just imagine the many cool projects you’ll make there!
And what’s really cool is that you’ll share them with us! Thank you Traci. Can you tell me what products you use for filling nail holes and also the kind of caulk you use and how you store it.
We never use the whole tube of caulk and haven’t discovered the best way to try to save it
for the next project….. Happy Easter Traci! Emmanuel, Alleluiah!!
I would love to do a pendant light in my closet. I use these bulbs in other vintage light fixtures and I really like them. Did your husband run conduit up to the closet or did you already have a electrical source?
Your closet is lovely!!
What an incredible job!! I’m beyond impressed with your ideas, I wish I had half of your imagination. Well done!
You amaze me! I love your new craft closet.
I love it! I love blue and how it works with the blue glass mason jars!
B-e-a-u-t-i-m-u-s!!!
Traci – THIS IS AMAZE-BALLS! Seriously. Love. Everything. About. It. You have a craft my friend! Great job!
As everybody else has said, that is amazing! Beautiful job and love the color. I wrote it down. ;)
Oh wow…that is such fabulous closet. I’m trying to rein in my jealousy. :)
Sigh…I have a messy space in the basement I use. But I LOVE the idea of the pegboard. Think I’m gonna have to use that. :)
Thanks, Traci!
Kelly
Such a nice craft space. And i love how this blue color made the whole space pop !
Love this Traci! That blue color and that light! Love, Love, Love it all! :)
Traci ~ I ADORE your craft closet. Love the blue pegboard and trim you added. I’m featuring it this week in the PoPP Spotlight. Thanks for linking up :)
Thank you so much, Maryann!
Blessings. :)
I own a custom closet closet company and occasionally design craft areas for my clients. I have also designed offices and work spaces in the past. And I just want to tell you, well done! Good job of designing a functional work space! (And I don’t give kudos to these kinds of designs very often!)
Traci, where did u get the metal rack that is holding your paint bottles on the peg board?? I love those & really want some. I just added a peg board to my scrapbook room & I love it!
I got those metal racks at IKEA. :)
Thanks!
this is so awesome, please come to my house and organize it? amazing. glenda
That is the first time I’ve seen someone remove the closet header, which I’ve been begging my husband to do in two of our bedrooms. That space on the top shelf is so wasted in our closets with by-pass doors that they just become junk collectors. Now I can show him this and maybe he’ll finally let me go to town with the sawzall! Love the makeover!
Where did you get the buckets due the peg board? That is exactly what mine is missing! It looks great!
SOOO GOING TO DO THIS IN MY BASEMENT!! LOOKS GREAT! =]
Silly question..for the desk did you use the same melamine shelf that was used for the top two shelves? I want to try and do a craft closet and was unsure of what kind of desk to build rather than have the typical desk! Thanks :)
This is just the inspiration I need. I was pawing through the closet in my craft room yesterday and wishing for reorganization. Have plastic drawers stacked up, the rod is still in there, shelf hard to access, and it’s dark. No door, as DH never got around to putting doors on ANY closets (oh yes, the 2 in the hallway on the main floor), so just a sheet “curtain across it now. Too bad DH went back to work this week (after 10 months off), but I think I could tackle it myself. I’m going to have to meditate on it – don’t want to have to spend a lot of money, but make use of what I already have and then tackle the HUGE MESS in the 12 x 12 craft room. Need to get rid of tons of stuff that I “might want to use someday” and have room for what I really MIGHT use! :) This is one of the most helpful and useful makeovers I’ve seen. Thanks so much for sharing!
Hi Traci-
I plan on creating this craft space as well. You must be so happy its finally completed.
I just finished my laundry room – its beautiful and my next project is to change the closet in the laundry room into my craft space.
I found your transformation and loved it. – when it is finished I will send pictures.
Thanks so much for posting this – Its so helpful when you know how to create and know where to purchase everything you need for your project.
Thanks again
Rose
thank you for sharing- loving how your whole family works together and pitches in!!
…where did you get those white storage boxes with the labels, btw?
thanks for the info! sharonna misha
Wow! This transformation is absolutely breath-taking, I couldn’t believe my eyes at first! Amazing job! Found you on Pinterest :)
Thank you! I am so glad we did this. I am still enjoying this space every day. :) Glad you found me on Pinterest. Come back soon!
I *love* this – the colors, the setup, everything. I have a rather large closet that looks a lot like your “before”…
Thank you!
I would love to know how to find those exact corbels you bought. I have searched Lowe’s website (and HD) and can’t seem to find anything. How much did you pay for 6? Do you recall the brand or aisle you found them in? It seems that there are corbels for sale in several different categories. Since we have a lot of shelving to do, I would rather not pay $20+ per shelf support! You really did a lovely job with this project!
Anne, I got my corbels at Home Depot. If you go to the store, someone would be able to help you find them. :)
And yes, I think they were around $6 a piece. Hope that helps.
Oh, and yes, $20 per support shelf may sound expensive, but it is SO much cheaper than buying new kitchen cabinets. At least that is the way I think about it. :)
I love what you did with your closet. It looks wonderful and operational!
Have you looked at the metal stools at target? I think they came in gray, red, yellow and green. They would look amazing in a craft room. The best part is they are 2/$99
Hi, I love this desk. I was looking around for some Melamine and noticed you used the one that is only 11 3/4″ wide. Did you double them up? Your desk looks much deeper than that!
Where did you get the mint green buckets!
Wow, love the pegboard color! My husband has made me a couple of areas with the Lowe’s brown pegboard, but I’ve been afraid to paint it for fear the paint would clog up the little holes. How did you prevent that?
Hi there-
I really love what you did with that closet! My house was built in an era (pre Civil War) when people apparently didn’t wear any clothes…thus we have NONE closets. I built an enclosure SOMETHING like a closet for the washer/dryer and I think it could use a makeover like this! Right now there is just a jumble of junk on some shelves in there – and I could definitely use it for my craft supplies – thanks for the inspiration!
-breida
Thank you for posting your ideas. I have been trying to imagine what I wanted to organize my closet and came across your page. It was exactly what I was picturing….so thank you for helping me find the inspiration to an amazing organized space. I can’t wait to finish my closet now!
Found this on Pinterest. What an exciting new space! Great job!
LOVE the before and after pics :) the lighter colors are SO nice and refreshing too!
I absolutely love this idea and I love the color scheme you chose. My one question is, Where is it you plug things in? :) Was a electric source added to the closet somehow. Sorry if you already answered this question I do apologize. I searched and searched and came up with nothing. Thank you for you time and again BRAVO!!!
LOVE this. I’m planning to steal the peg board/shelf portion of this idea to go above the bookcase craft table I’m making.
One question: how tall is the peg board?
I love this. I am planning to turn our guest room closet into a sewing/craft closet.
This is definitely a great inspiration.
My husband actually came across a picture of your husband cutting out the header to convince me to go up to the top.
I’m excited. Can’t wait to get mine done.
OK, I have my space, no header, new cork flooring and the rest of the office is complete. Now to start my daughter’s “office”.
How did you install the shelving? After putting the first shelf on the pegboard…will you please walk me through the next step of installation, as well as installation of the 2nd shelf!
THANK YOU. I’m of to Lowe’s
Can you please tell me where you bought the small hanging rectangular baskets you’re using for your paints? Thank you.
Those are from IKEA in the kitchen area.
Amazing transformation! I was googling for closet makover and just found this post. I love the way you play with the color. Makes the whole thing look really fresh. AND it’s very practical. Not having doors anymore that cover the insides makes it really easy to immediatel access the thing inside. Thanks for a great inspiration!
Thank you, Helen!
