DIY Patriotic Serving Tray
Hey Friends!
I am super excited to show you this Patriotic Serving Tray I made!
I started this project before my trip to Nicaragua, but I just finished it today.
I love serving trays, and I love celebrating the 4th of July! So I thought I would join the two together in this simple DIY project.
First thing I did was to purchase 10 yard sticks from Lowe’s and spray painted half of them red and half of them white. I also bought four 1×3 pieces of wood and spray painted them blue. {Not all of the pieces are picture below.}
Then I glued the yardsticks with wood glue to a 16×24 inch piece of plywood that I had cut at Lowe’s, and used a jigsaw to trim off the excess pieces.
Once those were dry, I cut the 1×3’s the same length of each side of the tray bottom.
We put wood glue on each side and then nailed the 1×3 piece of wood to the tray bottom with a finish nailer.
CONFESSION: I did not mean to leave a gap in the wood at each corner. I accidentally cut the sides too short. OOPS!
So I just cut a little piece of wood to fill in the gap. I made it a little taller so that it looked like I “meant” to do it that way. I think it adds a little decorative touch, but it certainly is not necessary.
Next, I drilled holes in each side of the tray to create the handles.
Here is the rope I got at Lowe’s for the handles.
Sorry the next picture is grainy. I took it of myself with my phone. But I wanted to show you how I just pushed the rope through the hole and tied a knot at the end.
Then I used a 3M sanding sponge and roughed up the edges of the tray.
I LOVE the way it turned out! I will definitely be using this every year.
You could make it bigger or smaller if you wanted.
I cut a piece of burlap to put under the plate. And no, I did not make that dessert. I went to Krogers to get some stuff to make strawberry shortcake, and then I saw this cupcake in the deli area.
I ain’t no dummy! I saved time and money by buying it, and I gave it to my hubby when he got home. Win-Win.
And it made for a pretty picture. Hee. Hee.

Love it, Traci! I think I need to make one in some happy colors to add to the deck decor – which I should go stain!
Ha! Baby steps, girl!
so cute! love it!!!
Thanks!
Love it — such a happy and festive project and I bet you will use it often! Thanks for sharing, Traci — hope you’re feeling better!

Thank you, Heidi! I am finally feeling better. :)
This is just too cute. Thanks for sharing.
I hope you are feeling better. What did the Doctor say you had? God Bless and we are praying for you.
I tried to pin this but I couldn’t find it. I am new to this so I don’t know what I am doing wrong.
If you hover your cursor over my pictures, a little “pin it” button pops up and you can click on it. Did you try that?
Thank you, Shirley. I am feeling better. :)
The tray is so cute, Tracy. I haven’t built anything from scratch yet, but this I might be able to tackle. Thanks for the inspiration. :)
Thank you, Sheila! I really do love it and look forward to taking it to my Dad’s this week to celebrate the 4th. :)
Cute tray! I especially love the added rope handles. Have a great 4th!
This is so cute! I love the rope handles AND the corner pieces! Sometimes our mistakes make the end result even better! (if only that happened every time, right!?!? haha!)
Do you remember the paint colors? Lovely
