A Little Chicken Update

I wanted to share with you an update on our chickens.

I shared with you right after Easter that the boys and I bought 6 chicks.

I also shared with you our little “dilemma” with the chicks.

Our dilemma was solved by building our chicken coop.

Well, the chickens have loved their coop, and they have grown a TON!  They are so big and beautiful.

Jonathan is our main “chicken man.”  He is really the one who makes sure the chickens have food, water, and are in the coop each night.

The chickens love Jonathan as much as he loves them.

Jonathan built some nesting boxes for the coop ALL BY HIMSELF.

When my father-in-law was visiting while I was in Nicaragua, he helped Jonathan cut out a door in the back of the coop so we could easily access the nesting boxes that Jonathan made.

In about a month or so, the hens should start laying some eggs.  Smile

We think we have two roosters and four hens.

It’s been fun watching them peck around our yard.  Although, they have started pooping in Cy’s tool barn, which isn’t a good thing. Sad smile

But overall, we’ve been enjoying our new chickens.  I’ll share some more updates with you soon.

Hope you enjoyed a blessed weekend!

xoxo

  1. I’ve always wanted to raise chickens, but don’t think my neighbors want the “early” morning wake up calls!
    Blessings,
    Cindy

    1. Cindy – you’ll only have early morning wake-up calls if you get roosters. If you only have hens, they’ll be pretty quiet … although ours like to announce when they’ve laid an egg (still not as loud as the crowing).

  2. SO FUN!!
we LOVE having chickens! When you start getting gets you will LOVE THEM!!
    They are so wonderful!
Looks like your boys are enjoying it too!
My boys (2 and 4) love their chickens too, however they are not as helpful :)

  3. Awesome!

I loved that picture of the boys standing in line when they were building the chicken coop.

Maybe you should do a yearly post in that same spot with the boys standing in that same order to see how they grow up. Your boys are really growing up so fast.

Sorry that the chickens are getting close to Cy’s tools. Oops!

On a different note, please say a little prayer for my 91 year old mom, she’s been in the hospital lately and home now. We think we are going to have to move her into an assisted living facility. It’s been a very hard week last week to watch her as her health and memory declines.

    Thanks,

    Marilyn C.

  4. They ARE beautiful! They are getting really leggy now, too! They’ll start to fill out and pack on more henny-penny pounds now, too. SO precious!

  5. I loved it when mine started laying. It’s like Easter egg hunting every day! Except you don’t have to hunt – it’s just a nice surprise every time you find one. :)

  6. Love those chickies! Once we get out of this condo and into an acreage (we are looking), I hope to have some chickens.

  7. Oh my goodness! They’ve grown so much! I’m jealous that you get to have fresh eggs soon! (Use to get them from one of my coworkers at my former job.) Enjoy!

  8. I’m in love with the chickens and very impressed with Jonathan’s handiwork. They’re following in your and Cy’s footsteps! Concerning the chicken droppings, at least you’ll have great grass! BTW, what ever happened with the garden you excavated ast year. I’d imagine the manure would be great for the compost heap.

  9. Beautiful birds! We love ours and they are very entertaining. Be careful if any are roosters. He will have his favorite hen and this can cause “feather picking/pecking. We had to get rid of our rooster because of this and because he was terrorizing one of the hens in particular. Has gotten better. Enjoy your eggs!

  10. They have grown so much already! I love the picture of them gathered around your son – makes me think maybe I wouldn’t be afraid of them after all : )

  11. Ohhh…memories. I was scared to gather eggs as a kid if the hen was on her roost but my daughter at age three on had no problems!! She still wants chickens and though big cities like San Francisco and San Diego and Seattle allow chickens (no roosters though) OUR country city ‘ol Buck Owens HeeHaw home of Bakersfield does Not!!! So I’m having a bit of coop and chicken envy about now–not for me–but for my now married daughter who even had her chickens and coop picked out!
So I guess don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched, huh?
I loved that your one son loves the chickens. And sorry Dad. Maybe you’ll need a little chicken wire gate around the shop??!!

  12. Wow, how they’ve grown! They are beyond precious! Can’t wait to see their eggs :).

Your sons are so adorable too!

  13. Thanks for sharing the update on the chickens. I hope you had a wonderful weekend and that Jonathan did well.

  14. Beautiful chickens! Our neighbors have chickens and fresh eggs are definitely the best! I think our neighbor has about 24 and they named them all, sorry but they all look the same to me! I was really surprised at home calm they are too. You can pick them up and pet them just like you would a puppy! One day I will have chickens of my own. =]
