DIY Upper Cabinets for my Office–Part 2

Hey friends!  I wanted to show you  more work we have completed in my office.

I already showed you how Cy made custom desks and window seats for my office.

So today. I am going to show you how we made the upper cabinets above my desk.

I was hoping to fill the one wall without windows with some cabinets where I can store a bunch of my stuff.

We had some cabinets in storage that were left over from our kitchen renovation.

So we decided to use two of them for my office.  We hung them on each side of the wall.  We took the doors off because I wanted to make new ones to match the doors on my window seats and file cabinet door.

We left some space between the cabinets so we could create some open shelves between.

We had some great wooden shelves, {that we took out of our closet when we did our craft closet makeover} that we used for the open shelves.

We also used some trim pieces that Cy had leftover from some jobs he had done to trim out the shelves.

So up until this point, we hadn’t spent a dime on  these cabinets!!  Yay!

The only thing I had to spend money on was wood filler and white paint.

After I filled all of the nail holes with wood filler and sanded it smooth, I used my Home Right paint sprayer to paint everything white.

I was loving how my office was finally starting to come together!

But I still had to make new cabinet doors for my cabinets and window seats!  I will show you how I did that next week!

Stay tuned…

  1. Looking GREAT! What primer and paint did you use to cover the oak? Oak has so much grain, did you fill it before painting?

  2. I love what you are doing in your home office/command center. Can’t wait to see the doors you are making!

  3. This is getting better and better..anxious to see it all done and what you do for pops of color! Maybe you could make that a contest; see who guesses what you have in mind! ha!

    1. Thanks, Bernice! I am really enjoying this space! I’m going to be pulling out some of the colors that are in my window seat cushions for the rest of my room. :)

  4. I love your open shelving in the kitchen. I have been wary of this look because it seems things would get dusty, dirty, and/or kitchen greasy easily. How do you like them now that you have lived with them for awhile?

    1. Hi Linda! Funny you ask. :)
I was just thinking this morning as I was putting my dishes away, how much I LOVE my open shelves. I have lived with them for almost two years, and I love them more than ever! They are so convenient and beautiful.

The top shelf gets a little dusty, but I don’t use those dishes as much, so I just rinse them off before I use them. I don’t cook with grease, so that is not a problem either. I’ve been very pleased with how clean the dishes stay on my shelves.

      Hope this helps!
      Thanks!

  5. You are doing an amazing job!! I absolutely love reusing items for new creative uses!! Paint does wonders to make everything look cohesive ! I really love the new look of the kitchen and the subway tiles! Looking forward to more posts

  6. Love, Love all the both of you are doing. How is it working with the open cabinets in the kitchen? I wish I had a Cy at my house.

  7. Ohhhhhhh Traci!!!! It has been such a long and busy week for me ….I am just sitting down for the day (midnight here in Ohio) and I am going through emails and I just saw that I won the gift card!!! I am soooo excited! Thank you so very much! <3 Much love to you and your family. :)

  8. You are such an inspiration Traci! What are the dimensions ? Desk top measurements? The corner measurements ? Trying to do something similar but can’t seem to make it work. Thanks so much for sharing. God Bless you and your lovely family.

  9. I realize that this is an older post, but I just came across your blog, so I thought I’d say thanks for the inspiration and I LOVE that you reused the cabinets. Those are my favorite kind of projects!
