Seeing RED! {Upstairs Update}

Hey friends!

I hope you are having a great week!

I’ve had an emotionally draining one, but I have to tell you AGAIN how much your sweet comments on Saturday’s post have blessed my heart!  They keep coming in, and I want to respond to each one, but I think it is up to almost 200 sweet, supportive comments.  That’s crazy!  You guys have definitely out done yourselves. Smile  Wish I could hug you each in real life.  Wouldn’t that be awesome?!

Anyway, I wanted to give you a quick update on the boys’ bathroom upstairs.

A few weeks ago, I showed you the vanities that Cy was starting to make…

And I mentioned that I wanted to paint them red.

Well, I did.

It’s REALLY red!

But I like it.  Smile  Totally boyish!

I think it will look great with baskets on the top shelf and fresh, white towels on the bottom shelf.

We are still trying to decide what type of vanity top we want to use.  It’s between concrete, galvanized metal, or chippy wood.

What do you think?

As soon as we figure that out, we can get these vanities finished!

We are also almost finished with tiling the shower.

We have to build the third wall in the shower and then grout it.

To finish this space, I am going to do a wall treatment, install new lights, and find some mirrors for above the vanity.  Still trying to decide the “look” I want.

Anyway, that’s it!

This bathroom has taken way longer than we had planned, but we are finally getting there.

Do you have a project in your home that has taken waaaaay to long to finish?

  1. I’m loving the RED too! As far as the counter tops I would go with the would. You have the dark tile on the floor already which is a hard surface, like cement.

  2. Looking good so far! I’d go with either the galvanized metal or concrete. Which ever you think might better tie in with the rest of your house. The chippy paint does not say young boys to me IMHO. However, whatever you choose, I’m sure it will turn out fab!

  3. I love, love the red vanities! I think concrete countertops would look great with the red bases.
BTW, you are brave woman to have white towels with young boys. lol In the kids’ bathroom we have all dark towels. lol
Looking forward to seeing the final product!

  4. Traci, this is going to be a fantastic bathroom! You and Cy are quite a team.

I love the way that you love red. It’s such a good color for you! I think concrete or galvanized metal would look great with those red bases. Honestly, if I were you I would choose whichever one of those would be easiest to clean. That’s what’s needed in my boys’ bathrooms, anyway! :)

  5. All of your choices would be great. The concrete always tends to look a bit dirty in my friend’s house, so I’m leaning towards the chippy or galvanized finish depending on the mirrors’ finish.. Whichever, i would go for an undermount sink with kids that are always getting into things; a chippy sink isn’t a design statement and they so easy to chip!

I also might consider an old-fashioned medicine cabinet with a wooden or even metal surround so they’ll have someplace hidden to put their toiletries (toothpaste at this point!). Is there going to be a towel rack on the side of each vanity. (Are those outlets for lights? They look high) Are you still using those fabulous metal pendant lights you bought a while ago?
I am loving this bathroom and especially the red sink bases and large scale flooring tile. I hope the rest of your week goes better.

  6. I, too, like the idea of concrete countertops. With the red bases and the white tile I think it would be perfect for the boys.

Just wanted to let you know that I am dropping many of my email accounts for awhile. I’m not getting anything done but reading emails and going to websites. I need to prioritize again and then maybe I can have them back. Thank you for being a joy to read and for letting me be, “a mouse in your house!”

    A grateful follower,

  7. Love the vanities! This has inspired me to build a custom vanity for my powder room, which has an awkward small corner.
What a great way to add an accent color!

  8. i love it! your bathroom is coming along nicely. so excited to see it progress. i think that concrete would look great! my only hesitation is that it might feel overly cold without some natural elements. Though, the baskets would help warm it up a bit. Just my two cents! Whatever you choose will look amazing i’m sure!

  9. Why don’t I know what chippy wood is? Am I having a senior moment? Lol…anyway, I have always liked concrete counter tops, but I think I might like the galvanized top. How do you keep it from being water spotted all the time, though. I think I agree with whoever said to go with what would be easiest to clean!!!!! I love love love the color red you chose. As a teenager and thru my early 20’s I had a bed and dresser that I had painted that color red. I got so many compliments and it is amazing how many things “go” with it!

  10. I LOVE the red. We will be doing our upstairs bathroom over and I may have to “borrow” some of your ideas. Thanks.

  11. I have to vote for the steel…like your dining table…which I adore. I can just see the metal tops and sparkling white basins with those great red bases. When I do a project I always think about how hard it would be to change it when I get tired of it. (You know we are never satisfied with our decor. About the time I get every room done, I’m ready to start over with something new. ) To get to my point, I’d rather change out the steel than concrete when the time comes. Can’t wait to see what you choose. I know your boys will love it.

  12. Hi! Looks like I’m in a minority with the counter top votes…but I’d do chippy wood. The gray coloring of the other options might be too much gray with the floor coloring. Just my opinion. AND yes, I do have a project that is taking waaay to long, we are restoring a 104 year old farm house. I am so tired of trying to make decisions, and at this point in the process they have to be cheap ones(or as hubby likes to say cost-effective!) We hope to be done and moved in by June 1st…so the push is on! I look forward to checking back in to see the bathroom progress!

  13. Love it! I too would have to vote for the steel – especially with boys :)

Glad you’re feeling lifted up by viewer comments. You’ve got to do what you’ve got to do. God has directed you thus far and He won’t lead you astray now. I love your blog and reading about your sweet family, exciting adventures and projects.
    Keep up the great work.
    God Bless!
(((Hug))) – I wish it could be in person too!

  14. I love the red! It’s cheery and fun. I would go with whatever is durable and easiest to clean. I speak from the experience of raising three boys! :)

  15. Looks awesomely trendy and timeless at the same time. As for the counter tops, with boys, choose the most water-proof, rugged option…whatever that is. God bless.

  16. Ditto on loving the red vanities! So fun and vibrant! The bathroom is looking great, can’t wait to see the reveal :).

I keep wavering between the metal and concrete, lol…I know whichever counter tops you choose will be the perfect choice. You’re so gifted at creating beautiful spaces!
