Submerged Color Mason Jars {#LowesCreator}

I am absolutely in love with the submerged colors trend right now.

Don’t know what that is?  Don’t worry…I didn’t either until last week!  Smile

I AM in love with all the shades of blue, especially aquas lately, but I had no idea they were called “submerged colors.”  I think it has to do with “water” colors, hence “submerged.”

Go figure.

As part of the Lowe’s Creative Ideas team, I was given the challenged to do a project using submerged colors.

I knew exactly what I wanted to do!  I wanted to paint some large mason jars in beautiful shades of blues and greens!

When I decided to paint my mason jars, I googled it, and it lead me to my friend, Tonya’s blog.  She had recently painted some mason jars for a bridal shower, and I like how she painted the jars black first.  So I decided to do it too!  {Thanks, Tonya!}

I bought some mason jars, and then went to Lowe’s to get some cans of paint in different shades of blue that I liked.

The names of the colors are:85201 Gloss Exotic Sea, 15310 Koi Pond Satin, 86007 Flat La Fonda Mirage, 85208 Tropical Rain Forest

Next, I spray paintde the mason jars with one coat of black.

{Sorry for the grainy pictures.  It was dark and rainy when I took these pictures.}

Next, I spray painted the jars in different colors.  I sprayed them once upside down.submerged color mason jars

When they were dry, I turned the right side up and gave them one more coat of paint.

Aren’t they pretty?!!

I wanted the “Ball” logo to show up well, so I  lightly sanded the paint off until I could see it.

You can see how I sanded the two on the right in the picture below…

I love how pretty they look all lined up on my mantle with hydrangeas in them!

The different hues of blue add such a fresh feeling to my living room.

As you can see, I couldn’t stop taking pictures of them.  Smile

I also lined them up on my coffee table for fun!  You can see my aqua throw and pillows in the background.  I told you I am loving these colors right now!

This project was so easy and so inexpensive!  It can be done in no time at all!

  1. I love this project! I’m going to try this right after our Easter Passion play which is next weekend. Rehearsals every night next week beginning Sunday thru Thursday then the program on Friday, Sat and Sun. I’ll be ready for a sweet calming project by then. Thanks for sharing.

  2. I was just in World Market yesterday and saw some mason/ball jars painted in a creamy beige sort of color. They were not nearly as pretty as yours. I didn’t think to check what they cost. I love these colors right now too. I am into the brighter greens and aquas. I just picked up some of the vintage green jars and they are so pretty. Love the hydrangeas too, are they real? Cute project, thanks for sharing the technique! I’m curious, what is the reason for painting them black first?

  3. I absolutely love this! Canning jars and spring colors – perfect spring project! I would never have thought to paint them black first.

  4. I love this idea. Just one question to be sure I’ve grasped this correctly..the black paint is sprayed on the inside, correct? And the other color on the outside?

    1. I painted them black first so that the words on the jar would show up better when I sanded the color paint off. Otherwise, the letters would just look clear. Hope that makes sense. :)

  5. These jars are so, so pretty and in my favorite shades. Would you please be kind enough to share the exact names/brands of paint you used? This is the color scheme of my bedroom and I’d love to do this project. Thank you!

    1. Hi Lisa!
      Spray cans do no have color names on them. You just have to go by the color of the cap. Hopefully you can tell by the pictures which colors I got. Sorry I couldn’t be more specific.

    2. Lisa,
      I am so sorry. I lied to you. I didn’t realize that spray paint cans had the name of the color on them! DUH!
      Anyway, I “discovered” them after getting your comment. I found the colors of the paint, and I’ve added them to my post.
      Sorry about that!

      1. Traci,
        Thanks so much for double checking and for sharing the information. This project is going to the top of my creative to-do list!

  6. Oh my goodness! I’ve been dying to make some of these & now you’ve convinced me that I can’t wait one more day. Just lovely. Thanks Travi!

  7. Wow these looks great! It’s interesting that you painted them black first. I would think you would paint them white first, to make the colors really stand out.

  8. I followed your directions to a T on my daughters
    Wedding colors. Did you yse fine sandpiper or
    Something else? The top coat came off but the
    Black is very bold/bright . Do you think I should
    Sand the black down more.
    Wish I could insert a pic here. Pls email me

  9. well I just got done with my first painted jar, I spray painted gray (that is all I had for the primer) then I painted using acrylic paint…the paint had dried so I put on some blue painters tape at the bottom because I wanted to add some glitter with mod podge..when I lifted off the tape part of my paint came off the jar primer and all! :( What in the world did I wrong? Help!

    1. Heather, did you use gray Primer, or just gray spray paint?
      You definitely want to use primer, not just regular spray paint.

      I’m not sure what went wrong other than maybe it came off because you used acrylic paint instead of spray paint. I know that if I put tape on my jars right now, the paint wouldn’t come off.
      Did you try it with spray paint instead of acrylic paint?

  10. I have so many mason jars on hand and I’m excited to do this with some of them. Thank you for your instructions!
