Painted Brick Homes

Last week, I showed you some of the makeover we have completed on one side of our house.  The post was focusing on the DIY shutters and landscaping, but the topic of conversation on my facebook page was about the painted brick.

Did y’all know that people get real opinionated about painted brick?

Yeah, me either. Smile

I kind of think it has to do with what part of the US you live in.  Here in Kentucky, painted brick is a beautiful, “Southern” thing.

I love driving down in some of the wealthiest parts of Lexington and just looking at all of the beautifully painted brick homes.  They. Are. Dreamy.

That’s John Calipari’s house above.  He’s the head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats basketball team.  GO BIG BLUE!!!

A couple of years ago, when I was searching for the perfect color to paint my brick, I went around taking pictures of all of the painted brick homes in this area.  I just fell in love with them. white brick house

I wrote a post about the homes, and shared them on my blog.  Click on the picture below to view those homes.

My readers LOVED that post and begged me to take more pictures of homes in my area.

So I wrote this post…

Click on the picture to see more gorgeous painted brick homes.

So what do you think?

Do you like painted brick homes?

Or do you like natural brick better?

What is popular where you live?

  1. I wasn’t going to say, but you did ask. I’m not a painted brick fan. However, having said that, there are exceptions. The first one that comes to mind is blonde brick. Hate it. Paint it please. Hey, if we all liked the same thing, life would be boring! And even though it’s not my preference, it doesn’t mean I hate it, either. Your house looks nice!

  2. I guess it depends on the “character” of the brick and the house as well as personal preference. Honestly. I think people have too much time on their hands.

  3. I’m originally from upstate New York, where there is a lot of unpainted brick, which is probably why I’m partial to unpainted.
Currently I live in Florida and don’t get to see a lot of brick buildings.

  4. I love your home Tracy. It looks adorable painted and I’ll take painted brick over that *eww* red brick any old time. But, I also live in KY where there are lots of painted brick homes. We painted our chimney that comes down on side veranda and it blends in so well with the white siding. I love it now…

  5. I like red brick, and I liked the original color of your brick, but I also like the way it looks with paint. I do not like yellow brick, as it looks very dated. The question should probably be, does the brick detract from the style of the home? Is the brick preventing the homeowner from enjoying the exterior of the home? If so, paint’s a lot cheaper and easier than moving, and it can preserve what’s beneath it.

  6. My answer it – it depends! I just spent a night in Savannah and there are lots of pretty painted brick homes here. But if the brick is in good shape, it seems a shame to paint something that requires so little maintenance. I like your painted brick – it adds a lot of appeal to that side of your house!

  7. I think if brick is painted, why not just go with stucco or siding? But, what if you didn’t build the home and you don’t like red/orange/yellow colored brick? No one should live with something they don’t like. Here one the pacific coast you see both painted and unpainted, but I think for the most part, the older stately homes that are brick are left in their natural color.

  8. My house has brick on the front and siding on sides and back. I love it. I think it is up to each person and there likes. Your house looks great. Will you have to paint it often?

  9. I love the painted brick homes. These are all very beautiful homes. If I had a red brick home it would definitely get painted. :)

  10. As I mentioned in my previous post, I love painted brick. I too think it’s a southern thing. People either love it or hate it. You did the right thing in my book. Now if I can just talk my husband in to it. (He’s from the north.) :)

  11. I have always loved painted brick. But have always looked at why would you create a job to do every few years when there is upkeep to brick?
    Love the look!

  12. isn’t it nice that we can have it painted or not and which one we choose for ourselves is what is the important thing. I think maybe it all got started when someone tried to removed paint from bricks that had not been sealed first and it was absorbed like a sponge. They were not a happy camper and the no paint on bricks campaign began.

  13. Traci,

I am a Home Builder and Remodeler, in Louisville. I have a client who absolutely loves the colors on the second photo. The ranch home with the double chimney. They want to paint a home they just purchased in Indian Hills this color. Would you happen to have an address of the home or just a street? Thank you in advance for the help.

    1. Brandon,
I actually went up to that house and knocked on the door to get the color of the paint, but the homeowner had only lived there a few years, and did not know what color the previous home owners had used. She said that she thought they had it specially made.
Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.
      Traci

  14. I can’t believe I missed this post. I love painted brick homes. But then again, I am also from the south. I’ve often daydreamed about painting ours and who knows if we decide to stay in this house forever, then it will eventually get a lovely coat.
