We’re doing the Chicken Dance!

Well y’all, we are doing the chicken dance around here!

You may remember that two years ago we built a coop for some chickens.

The boys help us make it, and they loved every minute of it!

I took a picture of them by the fence poles and told them I would take a picture of them by the poles every year to show how much they have grown!  Eli was 5, Adam was 9, Luke was 11, and Jonathan was 13.

Well, I forgot to take a picture last year. #mommyfail

But I got one this year, and look at the difference!DSC_0114

Jonathan is now 15, and he is taller than the fence post.  Luke is 13, and is almost to the top of the fence post.  Adam is 11 and has grown a little bit.  He hasn’t hit his growth spurt yet, but I am sure it is coming soon.  And then “Low Man” Eli, has definitely gotten bigger.  (Our neighbor nicknamed him “low man” because he is low man on the totem pole.)  ;)

Well, I never posted about it on my blog, but our chickens didn’t survive the summer.  :(  We are not sure what wild animal got to them, but none of them survived.  #itwasasadday

We decided not to get chickens last year, but this year, we had to have them.  The boys secured the coop a little better to keep the wild critters out of it.  We are feeling we are more ready this year to raise our chickens!

We picked out 6 chickens, and then got four Production Reds the next day, so we have a total of 10.

  1. We have four hens. I love having chickens. They are only for eggs. We didn’t want to get into butchering. You’ll enjoy having them.

  2. No, I don’t have them, but I sure do enjoy fresh eggs!! My housekeeper used to bring me double yolked ones in Ukraine! :)

  3. cute lil chickies………..and they say fresh eggs are the best……..
no chickens myself, my brother used to have
    some tho…..
Hope nothing bothers them this time!!

    Blessings, Nellie

  4. We are in the process of selling our current house to build a new one and put one goal is to have chickens at the new house since we will have room for them. So I hope we will have chicks next Spring! :)

  5. We don’t have them (yet) but I have done tons of research on how we will build our coop when the time comes. Depending on the types of predators where you live, have you considered fencing the top? We have hawks and eagles that go after chickens so protection from areal predators is a must. Maybe something to consider, especially if it was hard to tell what went after them before.
    Best of luck!

  6. We have 9 girls, and 1 rooster,a Jerome. The girls are 2 years old and Jerome is a year old. They are free range during the day but at night they are locked up tight. Nothing is getting in their house! We have 13 donkeys and 2 miniature pigs that they free range with during the day. With the exception of bird predators, nothing else would dare to come into our pastures with our donkeys on patrol!
