Behind the Scenes of Jonathan’s Blind Audition on The Voice {Part One}

Well, I am just now coming back up for air since Monday night!!  WOW!!  What a crazy ride!!

Y’all, I really don’t even know where to start?!  But this might be a good way to sum it up!…

Are you kidding me?!!!! Jonathan made TEAM PHARRELL!!  It was such an amazing moment!

Another highlight for me was to see my family on the TODAY SHOW the next morning!!!  Say wha?!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU  for all of your love and encouragement.  Our phones “blew up” after Jonathan’s performance, and I am sorry if I didn’t get to respond to your texts, comments, messages, tweets, posts, and more!  It was seriously crA-zy!!

I was going to try and give you a little background on this whole process, but I think I may have to break it into two posts because I have so much to share!

First off, I want to say that The Voice is the most amazing show on the planet!!  I was seriously nervous about taking my 16 son to LA to be on a National TV show, but man, my fears were unwarranted.  The Voice is a first class show!

Every single person we worked with from the producers, to the coaches, to the production office staff, to the camera crew, to the sound techs, to the vocal coaches, to the band, to the van drivers…I’m not kiddin’ ya’ll….ALL of them were TOP NOTCH!  I couldn’t be happier about the whole experience for Jonathan and our family!!

So the next time you are watching The Voice, please know that it is as incredible and amazing behind the scenes as it is in front of the camera!

Do you remember when Jonathan went to an open call audition for The Voice last February in Chicago?  Well, that was for Season 9.  The producer almost decided to ask him back to a executive callbacks, but didn’t.

Well, two months later, we get an email from her asking Jonathan to come to a private, invite-only audition in Nashville last July!  It was right in the middle of our hosting of our little girl, so she went with us!

Jonathan sang three songs in front of three of The Voice producers, and they loved him! :)

He got invited to LA in August for the Executive Callbacks.  This consisted of about 250 contestants vying for a spot in the top 100 who get a chance to have a blind audition in front of the judges.  This was him warming up on his guitar right before he sang…

I had to travel with Jonathan since he is a minor, and I will admit that I was pretty nervous.  But my boy….cool as a cucumber!

He would say, “Mom, I’m not nervous…either way, God’s got this…so it’s all good!”   #proudmama

Well, my sweet boy made it into the top 100 spots to get a chance to audition in front of the coaches for Season 10!!  We were thrilled!!!

So in October, he and I flew back to LA for 4 weeks!  We spent those four weeks in dress rehearsals, stage rehearsals, vocal lessons, legal meetings, and a WHOLE lot of down-time in the hotel.  We were sequestered to the hotel the whole time except for chaperoned 30 minute outings to Target or a local grocery store.  It was crazy! :)

Jonathan and I both met some of the best friends of our lives!

These “kids” were so precious and would call me Mama Hutch.  We would sit and talk for hours and even have worship together on Sunday mornings.  My heart was so blessed to be around all of these contestants.  They were loving, encouraging, and supportive of one another.  We prayed together, laughed together, and cried together.

Our lives have definitely been changed by this show, but it’s  THE PEOPLE who are now in our lives because of this show that mean the most to us!

Come back tomorrow to see more pictures of Jonathan’s blind audition and sneak peeks into his battle! :)

  1. Thanks for sharing all the behind the scenes info!!! I’ve been watching this show since the beginning and I had no idea what all went into it just for the blinds! That’s a lot of prep. How exciting for your family!!! :)

  2. Just wonderful !! What an amazing experience…. surely your Mom is grinning from “Ear to Ear” !!!! Thank you for sharing all the “Behind the Scene” things!!!!

  3. Traci, I am so excited for all of you about Jonathan’s journey, no matter how far it takes him. While not exactly the same thing, my 17 year old son has celiac disease and, as a result, I’ve grown to love the verses about the man born blind. ‘Not his parents’ sin (fault) or his, but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him’. So true of Jonathan!
Glad for all of you for the friendships you’ve made!

  4. Enjoying every minute of this and sharing it with my family. I also like hearing about the “mechanics” of the audition and show and how it all works. Question: all the judges are wearing the same outfits during all of the blind auditions. Do they do them all in one day?

  5. I am rejoicing with you and praising Christ for this AMAZING opportunity for Jonathan to be a bright light!

Jonathan’s testimony reminds me of this Bible verse: 1 Corinthians 2:9.
“What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived”—the things God has prepared for those who love him.

May the Lord continue using your son far above anything you could ever hope for or imagine (Ephesians 3:20). :)

  6. Traci! I feel like I know you through Cyndis blog as well as yours so I was so thrilled to see Jonathan Monday night! When you guys jumped for joy when Pharrels chair turned I was so excited! What a wonderful talented young man you have! You and your hubby have done a wonderful job with your 4 boys. They are just precious!
Looking forward to watching more of Jonathan and your sweet family on The Voice!

  7. This is sooooo exciting! I loved watching it on the big screen TV. I felt so proud of him and I don’t even know you personally!

May he do all of this for the glory of God!

    Enjoy every moment!

  8. Following your stories makes your readers feel they know you and your family. Watching Jonathan on the Voice is like watching a friend or family member. I wish Jonathan well, and I wish you well with your little girl.

  10. I watched the show Monday night, and Jonathon did an amazing job! Can’t wait to see where this journey takes him. Thanks for the behind the scenes look at the show.

  11. I’m so so happy for Jonathan! What an experience! We are The Voice die-hards and now we have even more reason to watch (if that was possible, lol). I got tears watching his blind audition. I’ve followed your blog for a few years and it seems like we’ve watched Jonathan grow up before our eyes. So thankful he gets this opportunity to showcase his God given gifts on such a great stage and I’m loving how so many of the contestants speak of their love of the Lord and mention Jesus and it isn’t censored. What a platform and nice to experience on ‘regular’ television-know what I mean? :)

  12. I just got the chance to watch this online this afternoon. So happy that they showed his “story”. I cried watching it so I can only imagine how you and your family must feel! Praying that he does well!!

  15. I was very excited to watch Jonathan and the rest of the family on The Voice. I got chills just reading your story. He did a very good job! I have followed your blog and your sister’s blog for quite a while now, long enough to see Jonathan grow into a young man. I told my husband as we watched that I felt like you were my friends and that you all were “just good people”! Congrats to you all. I know your sweet mother would be very proud of her grandson. Your boys are all so precious. Looking forward to the battle round!

  16. I saw him!! I totally screamed to mu husband telling him this the son of a lady that I follow her blog!!! I was so excited for you all :) I loved reading about how great the show is and how nice everyone was, makes you feel good about watching it :) I loved reading about how the whole process works, I have often wondered how it works. Thanks for sharing! Good luck to Jonathan!!!

  17. Congrats!!!!

Would you mind to send my a link where I could watch the whole episode or audition?

I don’t have cable TV (in Costa Rica almost every sigle person has but not my case jijiji). I just watched a youtube video but isn’t complete.

  18. We watched every night waiting to see him. My man, my boy (same age as Jonathan)and me. He did a great job and we are enjoying family time watching together each night. I love that you spiritually encouraged others in the Hollywood setting. May God bless this whole experience as He already has.

  19. Loved every minute of seeing Jonathan and your family. I cried. I don’t know why. I just cried. It was like watching a member of my own family. Crazy huh? I felt so proud of him. I told my husband “I know them!” He looked at me very strangely. Oh well. I do know you! Right??? In a weird sorta way. LOL Congrats! Can’t wait to see more. :-)

    1. Ditto!! My hubby thinks I’m a little nuts saying Traci is a friend of mine. I’m SOOO excited for Jonathan and also cried tears of joy when he sang! His singing is a gift from God!

  20. I was so excited to see and hear Jonathan on tv! He did great and seemed so cool and collected! We will be rooting for him!

  21. Talk about a once-in-a-lifetime experience! What a HUGE blessing, for all of you and for us as well!! I was right there with all of your other blogging friends and family, as proud as if it were MY kid!! :) I love Carson, he is so wonderful with all of the families, and it is good to hear that everyone made you feel that way. It’s really fun to get to share this with your family through your great pics and words!
    Cheering on Jonathan!!!
And I kept thinking of your precious mom, and how proud she would be. Maybe heaven parted for a minute and she got to take a peek… not necessarily theologically correct, but then… who knows? It would be just like God to do that! :)

  22. Traci, Thank you so much for sharing some of the ‘behind the scenes’ from The Voice with us. I have liked the show since I first watched it. Now, I like it even more. What a wonderful experience for Jonathan! He did seem at ease. God bless!

  23. So excited for all that is happening for you and your family. You are in inspiration and I enjoy your blog sooo much.
    Best, Gina from NC

  24. I’ve been recording it- I’m not usually into those type of shows. But WOW!!! What an amazing show! I knew he had talent- from all the stuff you’ve shared over the years. But wowza- he was so calm and grown-up. It really was hard to believe he is only 16. My heart just soared when he got selected. What an exciting time and opportunity and most of all- inspiration. I should take to heart the simplicity of his message. There are great things in store for such a talented young man. Blessings to you all. You have raised a wonderful and gifted young man.

  25. Amazeballs!!!!! So happy for y’all! Thanks for sharing all of this with your readers. I’m watching and rooting for Jonathan!! You’ve got an amazingly talented and very mature son!

  26. I have been so buried with work (yes, TV stuff!! lol) this past week but I am soooo proud of Jonathan. And Carson Daly hugging Eli…. could that be any cuter???

I am SO excited to watch this season and support Jonathan!! xoxo
(PS – the pic of little sis with them in Nashville… heart melting!!)

  27. Hi Tracy,

I missed Jonathan’s performance but was able to see it On Demand. He did so GREAT! And to be picked by Pharrell, what a blessing. I think he is the most humble person. What an amazing overall experience! And how blessed all those kids were to have you and Jonathan there. I am sure you have made some amazing friends. Looking forward to what is to come.

  28. Hi Tracy,
I found your blog through Jen at Town and Country Living, and I have been checking in ever since! Your adoption story stole my heart, and I think of you often. Now you have me hooked on The Voice (I’ve never watched it before this season!) and I am so happy that I was able to see your son perform on Monday. Congratulations on his amazing performance and getting through to the next round! Best wishes to you all!!

  29. I have a question for you, you said Jonathan was not selected for the executive call back. Did they let you know that or did they just not contact you at all? We took our youngest son up to Chicago, we live in Fort Worth Texas, to audition at the end of January and he made it through the call back and interview. They said if he’s selected they’d contact us by March 17th.
We watched your son’s videos and we read your blog about it. Jonathan reminds me of Jeremiah, my son… His Twitter bio reads, Child of the One True King and they have the same “look”.
