Our Guest House got a Fresh Coat of Paint!

Hey friends!

I wanted to share with you some updates we have been doing on our little guest house on the back of our property.

When we bought our 1400 square foot home on five acres seven years ago, it wasn’t because we were in love with the home.  Here is what it looked like the day we bought it…

Actually, I didn’t like it at all.  But what I DID like was the beautiful 5 acres and the quaint little “house” on the back of our property.

I immediately envisioned the cutest little white cottage guest house on the back of our property, but unfortunately, I knew it would be a long time before we had the money to freshen it up.  So for the past seven years, as we have been transforming our ranch home into our little Kentucky farmhouse, our little guest house has been sitting quietly in the back of our property.  We’ve used it mostly as storage, until last year, when Jonathan turned it into his recording studio and began living in it.  :)

Our goal this spring was to at least get the outside painted, even though it may take a while to re-do the inside.

So last week, we began prepping the outside of the guest house by power washing the whole thing, and replacing old rotted boards around the trim and on the decking.  After it was cleaned and repaired, it was time to paint.

We painted it the same color as our house, White Dove by Benjamin Moore.

Today, Adam painted the cinder blocks “Ebony Fields” by Valspar, and also put one coat of paint on the deck to “seal” it right now. It’s supposed to rain on Friday, and we wanted to protect the wood on the deck.

Adam broke his phone and is trying to earn money for a new one.  He did a great job painting!

Here is what it looks like as of tonight.  We will be removing the old brown gutters and replacing them with new white ones.  And we will be removing the lattice work below the front porch and doing something a little more appealing.

I have been documenting the process on my Instagram stories, so I put them together in a little movie to share here on my blog.  You can watch it below.

I’ll be sharing more progress on the house soon!

Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful day!
xoxo

  1. WOW! What a transformation. It is amazing what paint can do. Looking forward to seeing the completed project.

  2. Yay, Adam! He’s doing a good job and I like his choice of music :) It’s going to be so cute! That side window is screaming for a window flower box, in my opinion :)

  3. Looking great!! Wow, what a difference paint can make! Can’t wait to see what you will do on the inside!!!

  4. It’s adorable! I can’t wait to see what else you do to it. I have no doubt it will be fabulous!

  5. What a total transformation the white paint made. Cute cottage and I can see why you wanted to buy this property. Will be fun to watch what you do as you work on the inside.

  6. What a charming little place! Wouldn’t I have fun with that. I’d use it for my sewing and quilting and quiet time. My husband often jokes that I could use our shed for my sewing, but it really is a SHED. No way! Thanks for the fun tour. Happy days ahead for your family!

  7. How much fun this would be! Just curious. Do you have to use a special kind of paint for the cinder blocks at the foundation area, or just regular house paint?

    1. Hi Cathy! We did use Valspar’s outdoor paint for the cinderblock and will be using special deck paint for the deck as well. :)

  8. A coat of paint!! What an amazing difference just by painting. Great job, Adam on the foundation and deck!

  9. Tracy, I am so jealous…will it be your own she shed?
How adorable it is and the walk around deck is a dream as you walk around to the solitude of the back side of your little cottage.
Is there a kitchen and bath? I am assuming there is since Jonathan lived in it for a bit. Love the idea of french doors to replace the slider door. I would spend almost all my time out there enjoying the tranquility.
Great job so far…..can’t wait to see more.
I am still discovering more uses for oils. Yay!

    1. Thank you, Kari! It currently doesn’t have a sink or bathroom, but we will be running a septic line up there soon so that we will be able to add those features in the future. I could never live in it as is, but Jonathan would just come down in the morning and shower in the boys’ bathroom and get ready. :).
We are hoping to get it finished so that it will be a nice place for friends and family to stay when they are visiting.
And I’m glad you are enjoying your oils! :).

  10. You are amazing all you get done. What a blessing to have the gift of decorating and redoing. Something I don’t have and it causes a lot of stress. :( Anyway, can’t wait to see how you finish it up inside and out, but it really looks great with just the new paint job. Love all the land you have and I believe the favorite part of the video was the silence for a minute that you gave us to hear the birds singing. I took time to thank the Lord this morning on my walk, as I heard the many birds singing. I love this time of year. Everything just seems to come to life. :)

  11. What a huge difference!!!
From the outside it looks already now like a cozy haven :) I’m curious about the progress and above all about the end result.
