Molding Inspiration for our New Doorway

March 19, 2012 AT 10:27 am 18 Comments

Hello, friends!

I hope you had a great weekend!  Ours was full of basketball games, of course.  AND a trip to the emergency room.

Adam got a deep cut on the bottom of his foot yesterday afternoon while walking barefoot in a creek. Sad smile

He had to get four shots and three stitches in his foot, and he is hanging out with me today and trying to stay off his foot.

It was a pretty dramatic scene yesterday, but we are all good today!  Smile

Last Friday, I showed you how we tore down a wall to open up the entrance to our new addition.

wall 013

Now we have an entryway that we could just cover up with new drywall, or we could use this opportunity to frame out the new entry way with some beautiful molding.

I choose the latter, don’t you?!

So I searched around for some images of what the type of molding that we might be using in our new entryway.

Enjoy!

This one is my favorite.  The top of the doorway is very similar to the trim work we are doing on the windows in our new addition.

I love this doorway with the transom windows on top.  We are not planning on doing windows in our new doorway, but we do plan to do something like this down the road when we tear down a wall in our kitchen area.

This doorway molding is a little more “fancy” than we want, but beautiful!

The molding in the picture below is the type of molding that we are going to do on all the doorways in our new addition and eventually throughout the house.  (Is that floor gorgeous, or what?!)

Lots of beautiful molding in the picture below!

I am working on a post to show you the trim molding my husband installed on our master bedroom windows.  It is absolutely gorgeous, I must say. Smile

Have a blessed day!

We Knocked a Wall Down and I LOVE IT!

March 16, 2012 AT 12:03 pm 44 Comments

If you guys have been following my blog for a while, you know that we bought a 1970’s 1400 square foot ranch on five acres last June.  We love our location and our property, but the home needed a lot of updating and more space.

So last fall, we began adding on to our ranch to create more space for our family of six.

DSC_10834

We wrapped the addition in hardy board siding, and this is what it looks like now…

exterior 001

Please remember that the exterior of our home will take several years to get it to look like we want it to.

This Spring, we will be painting the entire exterior of our home an off white color.

Eventually, we will be adding a front porch and a two-car garage to the left of the house, both with gabled roofs to match the addition.

Now back to the inside of our  home.

This is what our den has looked like for a couple months…

The place where you see the stairs is where a small bedroom used to be, but now it is the entrance to the upstairs and the master bedroom downstairs.

addition 006

Now that the weather is warmer, and we don’t have to worry about the non-heated addition space, we decided to go ahead and tear that wall down.

So Cy went at it with a hammer this week, and I LOVE how it really opened up the space!

Now you can see our staircase right when you walk through our front door!

I know it looks hideous right now ladies, but it’s gonna be fabulous when we are finished!

Can you picture gorgeous wood stairs with me?

The two doors in the picture below will be removed and patched up with drywall, so we will just have solid walls there.

We are also going to frame out the new opening in the wall with some beautiful thick molding.  It will add a lot of architectural detail.

Here’s what it looks like if you are standing behind the stairs.  (Ignore my hideous closet, please.) Smile

Our den will get an entire new look as well, including the fireplace.  Yay!

So, here is the difference tearing down the wall made…

I am thrilled with the results!

Have you ever torn down a wall to create a more open feel?

Do you have a wall you would like to tear down?

Finally! An Update on our Addition! {Wood Walls}

March 14, 2012 AT 9:17 am 23 Comments

Happy Hump Day!

Just wanted to take a second to show you what we’ve been up to lately in our addition.

The plumbing and electricity is finished, and we are now getting to the fun part.

We had originally planned to put drywall on all of our walls.  However, I love the look of wood walls, so we decided to put the wood that we were going to use on our floors and put them on our walls.

laundry 015

We will be painting the wood and trimming out all the windows and doors.

laundry 011

Cy has already trimmed out two of the windows since I took these pictures.  I cannot wait to show you how they turned out!

They are beautiful!

Now we are in the process of hanging drywall upstairs in the boys’ rooms and adding more wood to the upstairs ceilings.

And we’ve torn a wall down!  I will show you that on Friday!  I cannot believe the difference it has made in “opening up” our home.

If you want to see a video of our addition, including the upstairs, I made a quick one for you.

Bathroom Windows…To Cover or Not To Cover?

October 4, 2011 AT 11:08 am 35 Comments

In yesterday’s post, I showed a video of our “new” claw foot tub.

Our claw foot tub is going to sit directly in front of our window, and I love it there!

I received a comment on that post that made me smile…and think.

Here it is:

Love the idea but I have not ever figured out why have a tub by a window is it going to stay there? So many new homes have beautiful tubs next to a window facing the neighbors back yards etc and I am just not understanding the calm private moments a warm bath suggests when one has a window near by.
What am I missing?

Good Question, Sharon!

I love when my readers get me to thinkin’!

I haven’t really thought about creating privacy by covering the window in our bathroom because of the size of our lot.  We have 5 1/2 acres, and about 3 of those acres are in our front yard.  So this is what you see out our bathroom window…

And this…

Not a neighbor in sight!

So I am not really worried too much about privacy, but I still would like the option of creating some privacy, especially at night.

I searched around last night trying to find some pictures of different ways to create bathroom privacy, mainly for a bath tub in front of a window!  :)

The three ways I like best  to cover a window is with plantation shutters, fabric, or stained glass.

I love the charm of stained glass windows in the bathroom.  They add beauty and privacy at the same time.  In the first picture below, you can see straight into the neighbor’s upstairs window.  In the second picture, after the stain glass was added, there is now complete privacy.

One of my favorite looks for a window is the plantation shutters.  It definitely goes with the farmhouse look that I am after.

The picture below uses a curtain and wood shutters.Lady-Daylight

I’m not crazy about the valance below, but I love the bottom curtain rod with the lightweight cream fabric.  It is important to use lightweight fabric because of all the moisture that can be found in a bathroom.

The windows below are gorgeous, but definitely do not provide privacy.  With blinds and curtains, I think that solves the problem, don’t you?

I am really loving the look of drapes in a bathroom.  It really adds a lot of elegance! Do you think drapes would look good in my bathroom?

This is a beautiful look as well!  I like how they added artwork to the window for privacy.  That’s a thought!

So there is some inspiration!  Which type of window covering do you like best?

Which do you think would look best in my master bath?

Studding up the Boys’ Rooms in our New Addition

September 19, 2011 AT 1:29 am 5 Comments

Well, we are chugging along on our new addition!

My husband is busy studding up the walls in the boys’ bedrooms upstairs in the new addition.

It took me FO-EVA to figure out the layout for their rooms upstairs.

The upstairs is basically a 24 foot by 24 foot space.

I desperately wanted to create a Jack-n-Jill bathroom between their rooms, but the layouts kept leaving me with two very long narrow bedrooms on both sides of the bathroom in the middle.

So we finally came up with a floor plan that put the boys’ bathroom in the corner of the upstairs.

When you walk up the stairs, the bathroom will be immediately on the right.

In the picture above, you see the bathroom on the right, and room #2 on the left.

The closet in the middle of the layout will be for both rooms.  There will be a closet door in each room that leads into a single closet.

I’ve been searching for decorating ideas on Pinterest, and I think I have a few fun ideas that I want to try in the boys’ rooms.

I’ll share some more pictures tomorrow.

Be sure to enter to win the dress of your choice from La Posh Style HERE.  The giveaway ends today.

I’m sorry I asked! (hee.hee.) Plus a video update!

Remind me to never ask y’alls opinion about a decorating dilemma again!

Y’all done got me more confused!  (Yes, I know I am using improper English, but it just sounds better that way!)

I had over 100 comments on my post about whether to put one or two sinks in my vanity for the master bath.

Some of you felt very strongly about your opinion too.  :)

I tweeted with some of you about it.

And some of you even sent me inspiration pictures to help me make my decision!

Look at this “twinkie” that Susan found of my buffet!

How crazy is that?!!

Doesn’t it look great?!  And with one sink!

I tallied all the votes from the comments you left, and it was almost a complete tie!

There were about 10 more people who said to put only one sink in the vanity.

Here were many of the reasons you gave for only one sink:

1.  Only one sink to clean.

2.  Not sharing the space with your hubby as he shaves and spits. :)

3.  Less plumbing.  Less money.

4.  One sink fits better with the shape of the buffett.

5.  Do what fits best for my family NOW, and don’t worry about resale.

Here are many of the reasons you gave for two sinks:

1.  Can get ready with my hubby.

2.  Resale, resale, resale!

3.  I’ll regret having only one sink.

4.  Resale. resale. resale!

THANK YOU for taking the time to share your stories and experiences with me.

It really did help me with my decision.  And you helped me to think of things that I had never thought of before.

So here is what I’ve decided to do…

I will be adding one sink to the buffet for our master bath.

If I were dead set on having two sinks in my master bath, I wouldn’t use this piece of furniture.  I would try to find another antique piece with a straight front.

However, this buffet will look best with one sink, especially because of the bowed front.   One sink will also allow us to keep more of the drawers in the piece functional.

We do not have a lot of money to spend.  So the fact that I already have a beautiful piece that I can use for only 50 bucks just makes sense to me.

I also think that one sink goes with the “look” I am after.  What I mean is that I am trying to create an “old house” feel in my new addition.  Most older homes did not have two sinks in the master bath, and I love the simplicity of that look.

The main reason that many of you said I should do two sinks in the master bath is because of resale.  And I totally hear ya on that one!  I watch those home shows on HGTV too, and they always say that buyers love two sinks in the master bath.

But I will have to say that I am not worried about that at this point.  Mainly because I am blessed to be married to a handy man.  If we did have to sell our home (which I hope we won’t have to for a very long time!), my husband can add two sinks to the master bathroom in a day!  No problem.

So I feel we need to do what is best for us right now and not worry about the future.  Carpe Diem!  :)

I took some video of the doorway we will be adding in the brick wall between our new bathroom and our old bathroom.

If you would like to see what we are going to do, just click on the video below.

Thank you again, for all your kinds comments.  I love you guys to death!

And you are making this addition to our home so much more fun since I get to share the process with you.

BIG FAT HUGS AND KISSES!!!

One or Two Sinks in the Master Bath? What do you think?

September 8, 2011 AT 9:22 pm 112 Comments

Hey friends!

I’m sorry I haven’t posted quite as often this week.  My back has been hurting again, and I haven’t been able to tackle any projects this week.

It seems right now that I am just doing a lot of planning.

Planning for our new addition.

Where should the lights go?  Where do I want my outlets to go?  How do I want to design the boys’ rooms upstairs?

Another decision I need to make is whether to have one or two sinks in our master bathroom?

I think we are planning on using this buffet for our vanity in our master bathroom.

I got this little beauty for 50 bucks at the Habitat for Humanity store.  It is in good condition and will look fabulous when I give her a little makeover!

It will fit perfectly in our master bath, and I love using furniture for a vanity.

Here is an inspiration picture from my Pinterest boards.

I think I may keep it stained a dark color, but sometimes I want to paint it off white.  I think a white vanity would look good on the dark hard wood floors we will have in the master bathroom.

But I am going back and forth about whether I should put one sink or two in the vanity?

Personally, I think one would look great.  And we really only need one.  Rarely are we brushing out teeth at the same time.  :)

Here’s a picture that I found with one sink in what looks like a master bath.

Plus, I will have a separate vanity in our master closet where I will get ready each day.  It will not have a sink, but it will be a place I can sit to put  my makeup on and fix my hair.

So we will not be getting ready at the master vanity at the same time.

However, most master bathrooms have two sinks.  I know for re-sale value, it is best to have two sinks.  (Although we do not plan on selling our house any time soon, if ever.)

This buffet could hold two sinks, but is it necessary?

I put some white plates on it to help me visualize it.  (Do ya’ll do silly things like this too?)

There is plenty of space for two sinks.

So, what do you think?  One sink or two?

I would love to hear your opinions!

Thanks!

Old Doors for our New Addition!

August 29, 2011 AT 2:26 pm 38 Comments

Hi, friends!

I am soooo excited to share with you a great deal we got on some old doors!

Ya’ll know that I love an old cottage/farmhouse feel in my home, and one of the ways I plan on creating that feel in our new addition is by adding old architectural elements.

The easiest way to do that is with old doors.

I love the look of old farmhouse doors.

So imagine my surprise when my husband came home from the Habitat Store with this stash!

I about peed my pants!

These babies are gorgeous!

And to make things even more exciting…guess how much he paid for these?…

NOTHING!   NADA!

Can you believe it?!

He was at the Habitat store picking up some used French Patio Doors for our master bedroom, and an antique door (the solid brown door in the picture below) for $100.00.  (The same patio doors sell for between $350-400 at Lowe’s!)

He ended up coming home with four more antique doors for free!  I explain the story behind them in my video…it’s a pretty cool story.

The white 5 panel wood doors will be used upstairs in the boys’ rooms.

They are exactly the type of doors I was looking for.  Look how much these sell for on ebay…

And some sell for even more than that!

My favorite door is this beautiful one…

This door is close to 100 years old.  Look at the beautiful detail on it…

We are hoping to use this door in our master bedroom, either as the bedroom door, or the bathroom door.  We are considering frosting the glass.

What would you use this door for?

And would you sand and paint the 5 panel white doors a new coat of white paint, or would you strip the paint and show the  natural wood color?

I am trying to decide what to do.  If you have any great inspirational pictures of old doors, please share them with me. :)

Anyway, here is the video I took the day we picked up the doors.  I was very excited about our “score” and had to share it with you.  (If you cannot see this video in your reader, please click on my post title to view it on my blog.)

“The Stair Pitch Project”

August 22, 2011 AT 11:06 pm 19 Comments

Thanks to my husband, I am soooo happy to finally have stairs in our addition!!

I KNOW that I am so blessed to have married such an amazing handyman!

He  could really build this addition from the foundation to the roof, but since he has a full time job as a banker, that is NOT possible.  So has contracted out most of the work that has been completed so far on the exterior of the home, but will be completing the interior of the home by himself.

Every now and then, he calls for me to help him with something….

In the above picture, we were framing up the new wall that the stairs would be going up against.

Cy built these stairs this past Friday night.

He put some 2×4′s on the stringers as temporary treads.

To the left of the stairs, Cy studded up the entry to our new master bedroom (which I am soooooo excited about!)

Cy completed the stairs around 10:00 pm Friday night (while the boys and I ate popcorn and watched a movie.)

The boys were DYING to walk up the steps to see where their new rooms will be someday even though it was pitch black up there.

I video taped the moment and thought I would share it with you.

(I realize that I have been posting a lot of videos on my blog lately.  I am having fun shooting them, so I hope you enjoy watching them.  I think it will be neat for my boys to look back at these videos someday when they are all grown up.) :)

This video is “supposed” to be a spin on the movie, “The Blair Witch Project.”

FYI:  All family members are alive and accounted for, including the dog. :)
