I am so pumped about the project I am sharing today!!!

I LOVE it when I get something for really cheap!!!

And I LOVE it even more when it is really ugly, and I make it look really beautiful!!!

This is what I did with this $3.00 brassy beauty from the Habitat store…

I know, I know… you are awestruck by its beauty!

I saw this thing hanging in all its glory, and I immediately saw it had potential.

It had the shape I was looking for.  The shape for the pendant light I wanted in our laundry/mud room.

You’ve seen them before.  Sort of like these from Pottery Barn magazine…

Or these I found these when I googled “pendant lights”…

Or like this one that reminded me the most of my brassy beauty…

I found it at a place online called Hinkley Light priced at a mere $418.00!!!  Holy Cow!!!

Well, my little $3.00 treasure was on its way to an extreme makeover!

Say goodbye to old, dated, brassy yuckiness…

Say hello to new, classy, Pottery Barn-style “va-va-voomness!”…

Oh, yeah baby!! Are you feeling me?!!!

Don-cha just love it?

Seriously.

For $3.00!  Get out of here!

(Can you tell how excited I am?)

It is exactly the “look” I was after.

All I needed was a can of Valspar flat black spray paint and a hack saw.

Sorry I didn’t get a picture of it, but see those ugly little curlycues on the top of the light.  I didn’t want them there.  I think it would still have looked pretty if I had kept them, but it was a little too dressy for my laundry room.  I wanted a more simple look.

So I sawed them off with a hack saw.  It took about 10 seconds per curlycue.

Then I disassembled the light so I could paint it.  Sorry I didn’t take a picture of that either.

Things happen quickly around here!

But I gave it two good coats of flat black spray paint and I was done!

My hubby hung it in our laundry/mud room.

I cleaned the glass globe and assembled it back together.

Wha-la!

Here are a few more pics…

(laundry room is not completely finished)

Here she is all lit up…(I guess you can see we decided to paint the bead board ceiling white!)  :)

Isn’t she a beaut, Clark?  :)

So for a total of about $6.00 or $7.00 (pendant light + spray paint), I now have a beautiful light for my laundry room. Woohoo!!!

Here is a before and after shot…

From Brassy to Classy!

I hope you like it as much as I do!

I will be sharing more about our laundry/mud room makeover this week.  :)

Have a blessed day.

“Shoe Bin/Bench Thingy” for the Mud/Laundry Room

November 13, 2010 AT 6:38 pm 22 Comments

I just wanted to share with you what my husband has made for the “mud” part of our laundry room.

We were wanting a place for the boys to store their shoes (out of site, of course!) and hang their coats and backpacks.

We currently have a little shoe box in the garage to “hide” the boys’ shoes.   I got it from my sister-in-law who used to use it as a toy box.

Unfortunately, their shoes don’t always make it in the box.

And I have been noticing lately that as their shoes keep getting bigger, there seems to be less room in the box.  Go figure!

So for our laundry room, I wanted to have a similar type storage for their shoes…just a little bit bigger.

We decided to make a bench with storage that stretched across the side wall of our laundry room.

So I videoed what my hubby was working on last night and today.  I am sorry the camera work is a little amateur, but hey, I’m an amateur! :)

Here is the hubster to explain what he has done so far…

So let me know what you think we should do to the ceiling, k?

We still have a long way to go, but I love seeing how it is all taking shape.  It’s going to be a great addition to our home.

Have a blessed day!

Mud/Laundry Room Inspirational Pictures

November 11, 2010 AT 6:00 am 22 Comments

I’ve been surfing around the internet to find some pictures to inspire me as we  work on creating a mud/laundry room in our garage.

One of my favorite places to find great pictures is Houzz.com.

Here are some pictures I found there…

I love the lanterns and light fixture in this one.  I am hoping to get a lantern-style light fixture to hang in our laundry room.  I also like the brown baskets in this picture…

The next picture reminds me that I want to try and add a chalkboard somewhere in the mud/laundry room.  It will be a great way to leave messages for each other on busy days…

(ckinteriors)

The picture below is gorgeous.  I love the green color of the cabinets.  I wish I knew how to do this type of paint treatment, but I am sure my cabinets would look like Kermit the Frog threw up on them!

I am going to stick with my “go to” colors…khaki, black, and white.  :)

I am planning on adding corbels under the shelving where the boys will hang their coats.  It will coordinate with the corbels I have in my kitchen shelving.

I like all the storage baskets in the next picture.  Plus the extra space for hats, balls, and gloves.  We have a LOT of sports equipment in our house to say the least!  :)

The following picture is my all time favorite.  I am using it for most of my inspiration.  We are planning on building a bench seat that will lift up for the boys to store their shoes in.  I am wanting to stain the bench a dark walnut color.  We will also be doing a board and batten treatment in the laundry room.  I have been wanting to do this somewhere in my house for a long time.  I know I will love it.  My hubby is also going to build shelving above the coat hooks to put baskets for gloves, hats, scarves, and such.

We have added beadboard to the ceiling in our mudroom, and we are going to stain it a dark walnut similar to the picture below…

This picture shows how simple shelving can be clean and crisp by adding matching baskets and white pitchers.  I also like the wood ceiling in this picture too.  The touch of blue they added with the mason jars is just perfect.  I might get some for my laundry room too.  :)

Okay, now this picture just makes me drool.  This is a laundry room you would find in “dreamland”, and we don’t live there.  :)
Seriously?
Do people really have laundry rooms like this?
Seriously?
Could I really have three machines, and keep my detergent in an apothecary jar?
Then maybe I could sip tea as I sat on my cute, white metal stool and folded clothes by my real topiary tree on my gorgeous, clean table.
No wait…I wouldn’t be doing the laundry…my maid would!  :)
Oh to dream…

And since we are already there, I thought I would show you another laundry room in Dreamland, USA…

Two washers…two dryers….farm sink…sconces…artwork…live flowers…bay window…beautiful!
Okay, let’s snap out of it.
Time to head on back to Realitytown, USA.
My mud/laundry room may not be “dreamy”, but it will close enough to perfect to me.
It will be built by two strong hands that I happen to love and adore!
How could I ever ask for more?

Have a blessed day, friends!

Laundry Room Video Update

November 8, 2010 AT 8:34 pm 7 Comments

My husband has been working his tail off on our new laundry/mud room!

I am amazed at how much that man can get day in one day.

On Saturday around noon, he was working on the plumbing.

I asked him if I could take a quick video on my phone of what he had done so far.

He agreed.  {sweetness}

This is his first video debut on Beneath My Heart!

He has done a whole lot more since I took this video.  I hope to share it with you soon.

I will see you tomorrow for Wednesdays with Wanda!

We’re moving our laundry room!

November 2, 2010 AT 9:43 pm 20 Comments

I thought I should share an update on the house situation.

We still haven’t signed a contract on the “new” old house that we are hoping to buy.  It’s a long story, so I won’t bother you with it. :)

And we still haven’t sold our home.  Actually, we’ve only had one “looker” since we put it on the market.

We are not really surprised, and luckily, we are not in a hurry to sell.

I am actually  hoping to be here at Christmas.  This will be our 7th Christmas in this home, and we have so many wonderful memories!

So as we are waiting…waiting to buy a house and sell a house, we are making some needed updates and improvements to our home to hopefully help it sell.

One problem that we have with our house is our laundry room.  It is located in our master bedroom that used to be the family room.

When we bought the house 7 years ago, we knew that we would have to turn the family room in to a master bedroom to make our family fit in this house.  The original master bedroom was very small and located upstairs.  It is currently Jonathan and Luke’s room.  The double closets in that room make it a perfect fit for the boys.

The odd thing about the family room when we bought the house was that it had a full bathroom attached to it.  Odd, right?

So we knew that if we made the family room our master bedroom, we would already have a full bath attached…even if it were completely old and out-dated!

We have loved having our master bedroom downstairs, and I particularly love that it has a fireplace!

But it also has the laundry room in it.  A very small, tiny, miniature laundry room. Right behind that door to the left of the black armoire.

Now, I really don’t mind the laundry room being in our bedroom.  It’s super convenient, plus I love falling asleep to the sound of the dryer.  :)

But the only thing this “family room turned master bedroom” is lacking is a closet.  Yes, you heard me…a closet.

It has a tiny little closet under the stairs that my hubby’s clothes are in, but my clothes are out in the hallway closet.  It has plenty of room, but it’s out in the hallway.  It’s worked for us, but it’s not very appealing to perspective buyers.

So our plan is to move our washer and dryer to the garage to make a mud/laundry room, thus freeing up some space in our room to create a “master” closet.

Here is where our laundry room will go…

We are creating a little room in our garage to hold the washer and dryer and some storage.  The hubster has started pulling off some of the paneling.  You see the door in the picture below?  It leads to our back patio!

So it will be a great place for the boys to come into after playing outside.  I am hoping to have a mud sink too to help with cleanup!

My hubby removed the insulation to make room for the new plumbing that will go there.  This wall backs up to our kitchen, so he will be able to tie into the plumbing there.

I am very excited about this project.  I will share all the pictures along the way!

Plus, I have been searching the internet for inspirational pictures of laundry rooms.  I’ll share with you what I have found too.  They are beautiful!  :)

Be sure to stop back tomorrow for a great giveaway!

Blessings,

Traci
