Window Shopping {$500 Visa Gift Card Giveaway!}

April 14, 2014 AT 1:35 pm
This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Integrity Windows and Doors for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

I do a lot of “window shopping” when I go to the mall, but that is not the kind of window shopping I am talking about today.  Smile

I’m talking about actually shopping for new windows!

I need some badly in my office.  The windows in my office are the originals that came with the house which makes them over 40 years old.

2014-03-06 14.31.25

As you know, very often old windows equal bad drafts.  That is the case in my office.

2013-08-18 18.56.57

The drafts in my two office windows were so bad that I had to use white duck tape around the window seal this past winter!

I am dreaming of new windows in my office.  I want double hung windows that make it easier to clean.

Like these double hung windows from Integrity Windows.

They come in six different lite patterns.

I am also dreaming about windows that are more energy efficient.  The Integrity Windows can cut my energy cost by over a third!  That’s impressive!

I hadn’t heard of Integrity Ultrex Fiberglass Windows and Doors until I wrote this sponsored post, but I have been very impressed with what I have read.

“Integrity windows and doors are made with Ultrex pultruded fiberglass…Ultrex is quite possibly the perfect building material for windows and doors. It’s durable, strong, stable, low-maintenance and efficient. Integrity windows and doors outperform roll-form aluminum, vinyl, and vinyl/wood composites in virtually every measurable category. While other windows might bend, break, or crack over time, Integrity windows hold strong and perform under great stress without showing age or wear.”  {source}

Painted Leather Office Chair {Radiant Orchid}

March 6, 2014 AT 2:55 pm 23 Comments

Hello, friends!

I just wanted to pop in and show you my new, painted leather, office chair!

painted leather office chair

Eli said it looks like a pink race car! Smile

I’ll take that!

This little chair has been transformed more than once.

I got it several years ago at Goodwill for $12.50.

painted leather office chair

It was the style of chair I had been looking for, but not the color, so I made slipcover for it.

slipcovered office chair

You can read about how I did that, HERE.

Well, the slipcover had worn out {thanks to my boys}, and I needed to do something different.

As a Lowe’s Creative Idea Blogger, I was given the challenge of using Pantone’s Radiant Orchid paint by Valspar in a DIY home project.  I knew that I wanted to use it on my office chair.

I have seen other bloggers paint leather, so I thought I would give it a try!

I started with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint because I like the way it adheres to any surface.  I only had enough paint for one coat. Then I lightly sanded the chair after the paint dried.painted leather office chair

For the second coat of paint, I used my favorite Valspar Premium Latex Enamel paint in Satin White.  {It comes in a quart size over by the spray paint at Lowe’s.}painted leather office chair

After that dried, I lightly sanded again, and then I used painter’s tape to create stripes on the chair.

Lastly, I applied two coats of Valspar’s Pantone Universe, Radiant Orchid for my stripes.

Lastly, once dried, I removed the tape and applied one coat of Annie Sloan clear wax.

Done!  I am pleasantly surprised with how soft my chair still feels.  Cy was even impressed with this little makeover.  painted leather office chairI’ve had fun incorporating pink into this space and making it my own! Smile  Let’s just say that living with five guys doesn’t make for much pink in my house.

This room feels like “me.”

I have no idea how long this paint will last on the chair, but if I get a good year out of it, I will be thrilled!  From what I have read from other bloggers, though, is that the paint holds up really well.  I will let you know!

Small Drop Cloth Curtain for my Craft Closet

November 14, 2013 AT 11:00 am 5 Comments

I wanted to share with you a small change I made in my craft closet.

It is something I had originally planned to do when I did my craft closet makeover, but I never got around to it.

But with Better Homes and Gardens coming to my house, it made me kick everything into high gear and “get ‘r done!”

If you missed my original closet makeover, you can click HERE or on the picture below and it will take you there.

craft closet makeover

If you look at my craft closet, you will notice a empty space in the middle of the baskets at the bottom.

craft closetI had several of you ask what that space was for.

Well, I thought about putting a stool there, but what I really wanted to put there was some hidden storage.

It’s all great and all to have open shelving, but I usually only like to put pretty things on those shelves.  That’s why I sometimes need a place to hide my “uglies.”

So I really wanted to create a curtain to cover up that little space and hide some stuff behind it.

I grabbed some scrap drop cloth material that I had and cut it to fit the opening in my closet.

I basically measured it the height of the opening plus a  couple of inches to allow for the hem at the bottom of the curtain and the “pocket” hem at the top of the curtain.

I measured the width of the drop cloth to be almost twice the width of the opening so that it would create a “gathered” look when hung.

Then I used my hot glue gun to create a small hem on the sides and bottom of the curtain.

And then I glued the top of the curtain over to create a “pocket” for the tension rod.drop cloth curtain

Then I just hung that baby up!

Easy Peasy!!!

craft closetNow do you want to see what is hiding behind the curtain?  Smile

I decided to store my sewing machine and paper shredder behind the curtain!

drop cloth curtain for craft closet

And I built another small shelf in there to hold some of my sewing supplies.

I love that I can hide items like those behind a curtain for easy access.

I don’t think I have ever showed you where my Giant Command Center is in relation to the rest of the office.

craft closet and command center

It’s right next to my craft closet.

And I have been loving it!  It truly has helped me stay a little more organized.  {A little, I said.} Smile

So that’s it!  A small little improvement to my craft closet!

I hope you are having a wonderful week!  Tomorrow is FrIdAy!!!  Smile

DIY Upper Cabinets for my Office–Part 2

August 28, 2013 AT 9:24 am 21 Comments

Hey friends!  I wanted to show you  more work we have completed in my office.

I already showed you how Cy made custom desks and window seats for my office.

diy office desk

So today. I am going to show you how we made the upper cabinets above my desk.

I was hoping to fill the one wall without windows with some cabinets where I can store a bunch of my stuff.

We had some cabinets in storage that were left over from our kitchen renovation.

Before…

c_thumb

After…

So we decided to use two of them for my office.  We hung them on each side of the wall.  We took the doors off because I wanted to make new ones to match the doors on my window seats and file cabinet door.

diy office makeover

We left some space between the cabinets so we could create some open shelves between.

diy office makeover

We had some great wooden shelves, {that we took out of our closet when we did our craft closet makeover} that we used for the open shelves.

diy office makeover

We also used some trim pieces that Cy had leftover from some jobs he had done to trim out the shelves.

diy office makeover

So up until this point, we hadn’t spent a dime on  these cabinets!!  Yay!

diy office makeover

The only thing I had to spend money on was wood filler and white paint.

diy office makeover

After I filled all of the nail holes with wood filler and sanded it smooth, I used my Home Right paint sprayer to paint everything white.

I was loving how my office was finally starting to come together!

diy office makeover

But I still had to make new cabinet doors for my cabinets and window seats!  I will show you how I did that next week!

Stay tuned…

I am excited to announce the winner of the

Congratulations to…

Giant Wall Command Center {for my office}

August 27, 2013 AT 11:39 am 65 Comments

I am so excited to show you my project today!

I have been wanting to make a “command center” in my home for like fo-ev-a!

giant wall command center

The biggest goal in my life right now is to be more ORGANIZED!  In our last home, I finally felt like I had a handle on all our “stuff,” and then we moved. Sad smile

It has taken almost 2 1/2 years in our new home for me to finally feel like I am starting to get more organized.  It has been so hard to be organized when, for the past two years, our house has looked like this…

installing kitchen floor

And this….

removing the kitchen soffit

Oh, and this…

pie 048

Just looking at those pictures gives me the hives!

So I cannot tell you how grateful I am that I now have an office space in our home where I can get my life organized!

craft closet makeover

I’m loving my craft closet.

And I’m starting to enjoy my new desk space, even though it isn’t completely finished.

office

But more than anything else, I am loving my Giant Command Center.

giant wall command center

I am a visual person, and I need to SEE things all laid out to help me stay organized.

So I painted a huge square on my wall with Chalkboard Paint from Lowe’s.

Then I used some inexpensive 1×3’s to frame it.

Since I like to see more than one month at a time, I decided to create 3 calendar grids on my wall.giant wall command center

I used a large level and a permanent white paint marker to create my calendar grids.

I decided to color-code the events on my calendar with Chalk-Ink markers.  (They are like chalk, but like a marker too.  I got mine at Hobby Lobby and Michaels.)

giant wall command center

The boys LOVE that they have their own color.  I hot glued a little wicker votive holder to the wall and placed my chalk markers in them.  Now, each event on the calendar is color-coded for each member of the family!

I bought a $5.00 clear plastic folder holder from Walmart, and spray painted it blue.  Then I hot glued that to the wall as well!  Smile

giant wall command center

The metal memo board is also from Walmart.  I use it to jot down important things that I need to remember to do.  I also use magnets to attach any appointment cards to it.  The little memo pad is magnetic, so it attaches perfectly to my metal memo board.  I use the memo pad to make my grocery lists or jot down any errands I need to run that day.  I tear the paper off and take it with me!

Hands down, my FAVORITE part of the Command Center is the four clipboards at the bottom!

giant wall command center

I have had a HORRIBLE time keeping up with all of my boys’ papers from school.  So I created a clip board for each of them to keep all of their important papers.  It has already saved my life this school year!  (I put four nails in the wall and hung a clipboard on each.)

When they bring home important papers from school about field trips or important school dates to remember, I say, “Clip it to your board!”

Now we always know where to find their papers.  It’s so much better than being buried in a pile of papers on my desk, like they used to be!

So there you have it!

Do I look organized or what?!

giant wall command center

I wish the rest of my house looked this way.  Smile

Baby steps, people, baby steps.

Do you have a command center

in your home?

Office/Craft Room Sneak Peaks!

August 12, 2013 AT 9:51 am 3 Comments

Hello, sweet friends!

Thank you SO MUCH for all of the wonderful words of encouragement on my last post about me getting a new job.

You guys bless my heart so much, and you’ve got me excited about this new adventure in my life.

I will be sure to keep you posted and maybe share a little “kid story” with you every now and then.  You never know what a kindergartener will say! Smile

I have been working like a mad woman trying to finish my office/craft room before schools starts.  I REALLY want to be more organized this year!  I thought I would have time to work on it while the boys were at school, but now that I am going to be working, I needed to get it finished now.

So here are a few sneak peaks.  I am not totally finished, but I am getting there!

window seat

I am in love with my window seats!  I made that cushion, and I am going to show you how this week!  It’s super easy.

I also made the cabinet doors!  Yes. I. Did.

office

I will also be sharing a tutorial of how I made the cabinet doors and saved a LOT of money!

command center

One of my favorite parts of the room is a HUGE command center that I created on the wall.  I cannot wait to show it to you too!

Now, I am headed out the door to finish shopping for school supplies.  Adam has his Open House tonight and school starts on Wednesday!

Is anyone going as crazy as me?!  Are you guys ready for school to start?

Decorative Burlap Memo Board {for my office}

July 2, 2013 AT 12:25 am 21 Comments

Hey friends!

I wanted to show you something I made for my office.

It is a large burlap memo board.

burlap memo board

I love it because it is decorative and functional.

DSC_0081

It was super easy to make, and I got all my supplies at Lowe’s {minus the burlap.}

Supplies from Lowe’s:

Large Green Foam Board {Insulated Sheathing}

1×2 pieces of wood

Oil Rubbed Bronze Upholstery tacks

Here is what the insulated sheathing looks like…

Pactiv 1/2-in x 8-ft x 4-ft Extruded Polystyrene Insulated Sheathing

Pactiv 1/2-in x 8-ft x 4-ft Extruded Polystyrene Insulated Sheathing

It’s over near the lumbar section at Lowe’s.

FIRST, I measured the space between my office desktop and the upper cabinets and created a frame out of the 1×2 pieces of wood.

phone 029

I used wood glue and my nail gun to attach the pieces of wood together.

THEN, I laid the wooden frame on top of the green foam board and used a box cutter to cut the foam board the same size.

master closet 021

I used a glue gun to attach the wood frame to the foam board.

master closet 022

AFTER THAT, I laid the board on to of a large piece of burlap that I got at Hobby Lobby.

master closet 025

I just pulled the burlap tightly over the frame and hot glued it to the wood.

BE CAREFUL!!  You can easily burn your fingers during this step.  {Don’t ask how I know.} Smile

master closet 026

Lastly, I turned the board over and nailed the upholstery tacks evenly around the edges of the board.

master closet 028

How big your board is will determine how far apart your upholstery tacks are.  You can space them out however you want.

Then I placed the board against the wall.  It was a very snug fit, but just to secure it a little more, my husband screwed the top of the frame to the upper cabinets.  {He screwed the screw down through the bottom shelf of the cabinets into the wood frame.}

DSC_0077

I absolutely LOVE my new decorative memo board!  It adds texture and color to the walls, but it is also functional.

DSC_0079

It’s going to really help me stay more organized.

DSC_0073

I look forward to showing you the rest of my office transformation soon!

Stay tuned….

Our Office Makeover Has Begun!

May 20, 2013 AT 10:48 am 33 Comments

Happy Monday!!!  I hope you had a great weekend!

I wanted to pop in real quickly and show you the progress we are making on my office.

I won’t be on the computer much today because I will be busy painting and doing more work in my office.

Just a reminder of what this space used to be…this was an 11×11 ft bedroom that we were turning into my office/craft room.

First we turned the closet into a craft supply area…

closet

Now we are tackling the rest of the room.  This room has been a dumping ground of stuff galore!  It has made me a nervous wreck!

awana 031

We cleared out the room and ripped up the nasty carpet and have started creating my new desk and window seats.

office 018

I am so thrilled with how it is turning out!

office 020

Cy has already trimmed everything out and we have painted and caulked it all.  I will share more of that with you soon!

But here is a sneak peek…

office 038

I cannot wait to decorate this space!  YAY!

And then I am going to GET ORGANIZED!!!

Yes, I am!

Is anyone else feeling as disorganized as I am right now?
