Wednesdays with Wanda

August 25, 2010 AT 5:12 pm 17 Comments

This week, I wanted to share with you one of Mom’s article from Home Life Magazine.  She only wrote for Home Life for a couple of years, but I love having these magazines to look back at and enjoy.

Here is one I have from October, 1994.

When Mom wrote for our local newspaper, she took the pictures for her article herself.  However, when she began writing for Home Life Magazine, they had a cook make Mom’s recipes and a photographer take pictures of them.

Sometimes Mom liked the way the pictures turned out and sometimes she didn’t.  She would say, “That’s not what my recipe was supposed to look like!”  It was the perfectionist side of her.  A characteristic I may have inherited from her. (wink)  :)

I love how Mom began most of her articles with a personal story about our family or friends.  She also always included a “Food For Thought” at the end of each article.  She loved using her articles to honor those she loved and treasured in her life, like her sweet Mother-in-Law (Granny), that she wrote about in this one.

I hope you enjoy!

Here is the article as it appeared in the magazine….

I separated the article into smaller sections so you could see it a little bit better…

Have a blessed day!

I want to thank Rhoda from Southern Hospitality for posting about a “Before and After” contest at One Project Closer!

I entered my Patio Concrete Floor Makeover last week, and I won!

This week, my patio makeover was featured on their site, and I won a $50.00 gift card to Lowe’s.  Holla!

It’s a GREAT contest because they also donate $100.00 in each winner’s name to Habitat for Humanity.

At the end of the summer, readers will be able to vote on their favorite makeover of the summer, and the final winner will win a $150.00 gift certificate!

If you want to check out my post, or if you want to enter your own DIY Before and After Project, click HERE.

There’s only a little time left in the contest.

Wanna come to my party?

August 19, 2010 AT 6:00 am 21 Comments

Calling all local bloggers!!!

I am having a Willow House Party at my house next week, August 26th, and you are invited.

Have you heard of Willow House?

It used to be called Southern Living at Home.

My good friend, Lori, is a consultant for Willow House, and I am hosting a party for her next week.

I really do love their  products, and have been adding to my collection ever since Lori has been selling them!

I have several pieces of their Cinnabar collection, and they are my favorite!

At Lori’s last party, I got the Cinnabar square casserole dish and some more of the Cinnabar tidbits.

I  love the little tidbits!  I use them ALL the time, especially on Taco Tuesday at our house!  :)

I give each of the boys their own little bowl of cheese so they don’t fight over it.

Sometimes I use these bowls for fruit or for yogurt.  I even used them last Christmas as a decoration.  I put some white candles in them and added some touches of green pine around it.  It was gorgeous!

Here is the Cinnabar Baker that I keep on my black shelf in the kitchen.  I use this piece a lot too!

BTW, I made those Ballard Designs inspired black shelves last year.  If you want to see the complete tutorial on how to make your own cafe shelves, click HERE.

I have a few more things from Willow House around my house.

Mom bought me these wall sconces for my birthday two years ago…

And she also bought me their cake stand.  I love storing it in the black hutch in my kitchen.

The only close-up picture I had of it was from last Christmas…

Anyway, I am having a Willow House Party at my house next Thursday.

If you are a blogger that lives close enough to come, please do!  I would love to meet you.

Of course, all serial killer bloggers are not welcome!

If you would like to come, and you have never committed a felony, please email me and I will send you my address.  (If I feel comfortable that you are not a crazy person!)

And if I do think you are a crazy person, please don’t take it personally.  :)

I will be taking pictures of the food and fellowship to share on my blog next week.

I can’t wait!

Hope to see you there!

Wednesdays with Wanda

August 18, 2010 AT 11:13 am 29 Comments

(If you are new to my blog, welcome!  Just wanted to let you know that each Wednesday, I write a post about my mom who passed away 11 months ago.  These posts are a way for me to share with others what a wonderful person my mother was, and also to preserve memories of her for myself, my children, and her family.)

First of all, I want to thank you for being so understanding about my Wednesdays with Wanda post last week.  I know that Mom would have been proud of me for listening to her and getting the sleep I needed.

Your comments were precious and I treasured every one!  Thank you.

I know my sister is going to kill me for posting this family picture!  :)

I love this picture because I am wearing my “Laura Ingalls” dress.  At least that’s what I called it.  I was a huge fan of “Little House on the Prairie.”  My mom made me that dress.  She was an amazing seamstress.  I loved the puffy sleeves and the way the skirt flew out when I spun around.

I shared this picture because I wanted you to see the precious family I grew up in.  I had two of the best parents a girl could ever dream of, a beautiful sister that I wanted to be just like, and a pesky little brother that was the apple of Mom’s eye!  :)

My sister is four years older than me, so when I showed up in the family, I was like Cyndi’s very own “real” baby doll.  We girls had a lot of fun together.

When I was 7 months old, Mom unexpectedly got pregnant with my brother, Blake.  Of course, she was excited about having another child, but she felt so guilty about me still being so young.  She used to tell me that she always worried that I wouldn’t get the attention I needed as a baby because my  new baby brother would require so much attention too.

However, Mom was always proud to tell me that she rocked me to sleep every night!  She never wanted to deny me of those special moments just because there was a younger baby in the house.

Mom was so cute.  She always worried about me suffering from the “middle child” syndrome.  She never wanted me to feel like I was stuck somewhere in the middle.

So Mom came up with something to make me feel extra special…

She would always call me her “Magic Link”.

She would explain to me that there where 5 people in our family…

Dad, Cyndi, Traci, Blake, Mom.

See my name there in the middle?

Mom would hold her fingers together like this…

And then she would say…

“Traci, you are the “Magic Link” in our family.  You are right in the middle and you hold us all together.  If we didn’t have you in the family, we would fall apart.  You are very important to our family!”

I cannot tell you how special that made me feel or how many times I had the privilege of hearing  Mom say that.

I truly did feel important.

The best part is that Mom didn’t just tell me that as a kid, she continued to call me her “Magic Link” even up to her passing.

Last week, I found some cards that Mom had sent me since I have been married.  I have always told you how much Mom loved writing notes to the people she loved.  I love how Mom always wrote us notes “just because”.  We didn’t hear how much she loved us just on our birthdays or special occasions.  But she made sure we felt her love all year round!

I have a folder that I keep special mementos in, and my Mom’s cards were in there.  I can just feel Mom’s love oozing out all over me when I read them even now.  I am so thankful for my mom’s letters!

Eight years ago, I owned  my own day care called, “Cross My Heart Preschool and Child Care Center”.  That is what Mom is referring to in these letters.

Notice how Mom included her favorite verse, John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you, not as the world gives do I give to you.  Let not your heart be troubled nor let it be afraid.”

This verse was her life-line during her battle with cancer.

Here is another card I found…

See why I miss my mom so much?!   Her words brought me comfort, encouragement, blessings, joy, guidance and so much more.

That is why her voice is still so strong in my life even now.   I have years and years worth of Mom’s beautiful words stored deep within my heart (and even on paper).

Our words are so powerful aren’t they?

I pray that you and I both will use our words to encourage and strengthen those around us each day.  It doesn’t always come naturally to me.  I am praying that the Lord would fill my mouth with His goodness each day.  I want my words to be a blessing to others.

Ephesians 4:29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. (NIV)

Thank you for stopping by and letting me share the thoughts Beneath My Heart!

Back Patio Reveal (And 5 Giveaway Winners!)

August 16, 2010 AT 6:00 am 69 Comments

Happy Monday, Ladies!

I hope you had a nice, restful weekend.  I would like to say that I did…but I would be lying…and that’s not nice.

I came down with a cold at the end of last week that zapped me of any energy whatsoever, so I apologize for not getting to share my “big” patio reveal with you on Friday.  You must have been terribly disappointed.  I know you were waiting on pins and needles! (wink)

I have mentioned several times that this patio has kicked my tail this summer.  Well, it’s true.

I cannot tell you how many pillows and cushions I have purchased and returned because I didn’t like the way they looked with my patio furniture!  If I had kept count, you would have thought I was verging on physco.

The problem began with our patio floor.

Do you remember our project at the beginning of the summer?

We turned our plain, ugly concrete patio floor into a beautiful (faux) tile patio floor by staining the concrete.  Click HERE for the tutorial.

stained concrete tile

It really turned out pretty, so why was it a problem?

Because it ended up being a little darker than I had expected, and my black patio furniture tended to “sink” into the dark brown tile floor.

So after about 87 pillow purchases (and returns), and 2 rugs later, it finally started coming together.

Here is what my patio looks like now….

patio re-do

The rug from Lowe’s and the off-white pillows from Pottery Barn really made my black table and chairs “pop”.  I love the way it looks now.

To add a touch of off-white to the other side of the patio, I added the coffee table from my guest house that I got at Goodwill for $6.50.  If you want to see what it looked like before I painted it, click HERE.

The planter on the table was my mom’s, the red plate ($1.00) and the basket/tray ($4.50) on the bottom of the table were both from Goodwill, and the candle used to be my sister’s.  She had it for sale at a yard sale, and when it didn’t sale, I took it home.  :)

This coffee table has the same paint treatment as the buffet table that I painted last weekend.  I think both pieces help to lighten up the patio even more.

If you want to see my buffet table re-do, click HERE.  To accessorize this table, I just pulled things out of my house.  The tall “wish” jar used to be on my piano and was purchased on clearance at Gordman’s last year.  The pewter salt and pepper shakers were a wedding gift, the lantern I got last year at Gordman’s for about 5 bucks, the white bowl was a purchase from a flea market, and the faux green apples I got from Marshall’s last year.

I struggled with how to decorate the table.  I wanted to make a beautiful tablescape to share with you, but I just haven’t had the time or money to put it together.  So instead, I just got these beautiful mums from Lowe’s and put them in this adorable double galvanized planter that I got from JoAnn’s.  It was regularly $19.99, and it was on sale for $6.50!  Score!

The galvanized planters bring a little bit of a rustic feel, and I love it.

I call it my “touch of Layla” (The Lettered Cottage).  :)

I am still looking for ways to create a beautiful tablescape, but for now I am enjoying the look of my mums.

My favorite addition to the patio was my hanging lanterns!  I have had these lanterns a couple of years, so adding these cost me almost nothing!

I just got this idea this week, and I cannot tell you how much it added to this space.

They are so darn cute hanging there!

I hung them from some iron hooks that I got at a yard sale two summers ago.  They were gray and rusty and only 50 cents a piece.  I took them home and painted them black knowing that I would use them somewhere someday.

The hooks were originally a little longer…

But I didn’t want the lanterns to hang too far out from the post, so my sweet hubby cut the end loop off with his hack saw, and it was perfect!

It rained this evening as I was trying to finish taking pictures for this post.  Here are some pictures of the candles lit in the lanterns…

I love looking at my little lanterns from my kitchen window.

The pillows and cushions in my wicker chairs and on the swing are from Garden Ridge…

In the late afternoon to evening, the sun beams down on the table area.  It makes it absolutely miserable to eat dinner!

That’s why I need my drop cloth curtains to block the sun!  If you missed my post about how I hung these curtains, click HERE.

It works perfectly and makes eating so much more enjoyable!

Some of you have asked me if the drop cloths will mildew when the get wet.  The answer…idunno.

It has rained the past two days, and when the curtains get wet, I just pull them all the way out to dry.  So far so good.

I think they will hold up just fine, but if they don’t, I will be sure to let you know. :)

(At least they wouldn’t cost much to replace!)

Just for fun, I wanted to share with you the “before” pictures from last summer and compare them to the “after” pictures now!

I really do love the way it has all come together!

My hubster even said that it is the prettiest room in the house!  :)

I am so glad I was able to get it finished before a little get together I am having at my house next week. (BTW, if you live nearby, you are invited!  I’ll tell you about it later this week.)

I have more pictures to share, but I will save them for another post.  It is getting late, and I need my sleep!

Thanks for stopping by!

Hey Ladies!  I was going to reveal my patio to you today, but I have had a cold and just couldn’t do it.  (I will reveal it on Monday.)           So instead….

I have a great giveaway for you!!!

Actually 5 of you!!!

You heard me right.  One of my fabulous sponsors is giving away FIVE $50 gift certificates to their online design site, My Design Guide.

mdg_tdc4

Here is what Champe Granger, one of the owners, wrote to me in an email…

“Our company provides affordable custom interior design services (by real, accredited designers) with prices from $29 to $339.

Our philosophy is that you don’t have to buy everything from scratch, but we give you a complete 3D design, product selection, and shopping list for creating a beautiful new room.  We can even incorporate your existing furnishings.

Please visit our Design Gallery to see our work.”

I DID visit their Design Gallery and enjoyed looking at their work.  They offer a lot of great solutions to everyday decorating dilemmas.

I even tried out their “Style Finder”…

I filled out a quick questionnaire by clicking on the decorating photos that I liked, and it told me what my design style was.  The Style Finder said I was…  Coastal, Country, Romantic, and Rustic.  (Sounds like “cottage-style” to me!)  :)

Now I have a “Home Registry” page where I can store all of my information about my home.  I can save paint colors, room sizes, and print shopping lists.

Wednesdays with Wanda

August 11, 2010 AT 6:00 am 26 Comments

It is 11:01 p.m. on Tuesday night, and I am just sitting down to do my Wednesday with Wanda post for tomorrow.

It’s not because I have procrastinated.  It’s because this is the first time I have had today to sit down and write.

Yesterday, I worked at my job from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, dropped my youngest son off at my sister’s house, drove 40 minutes home, changed clothes and freshened up in 15 minutes, then hustled out the door for my 3 oldest sons’ Open House at school from 5:30-7:00 pm.

We had to go to the Open House so the boys could meet their new teachers, but we also had to be there because I had to meet the parents and students of the third grade classroom that I will be teaching!

Yep.  I am going to be a long-term sub (14 weeks) for a third grade class at the school that I used to teach at 11 years ago.

It was very exciting for me to be back in the classroom!

On the way home, we stopped at Lowe’s to get the handles for the table I was refinishing for the back patio.

I worked on that table until after 9:00 pm and then it took me over an hour to post about it.

This morning, I had to be at work at 7:30 am, which means I had to leave the house before 7:00 am, and I didn’t get off until 7:30 p.m.

I had to pick my boys up from my sister’s house, and it was almost 9:00 p.m. before we got home.

Of course, my stinky boys all needed to take showers before bedtime,   :)  so it was around 9:30 before everyone got in bed.

Then I spent over an hour filling out over 30 pieces of paperwork that the boys needed for school tomorrow.  Tomorrow is their first day of school!  And it will be my first day in my third grade classroom.

All the while, I am worrying about how I am going to have the energy to post for Wednesdays with Wanda.

I already know what I want to post about, but I would be up another hour if I did it.

Since Mom passed away almost a year ago, I have written about her every Wednesday.  Not posting about her makes me feel guilty.  I don’t want to let Mom down, or my readers down.

But I know the truth …Mom would never want me to feel guilty.

As I sat down at this computer, tears began to fill my eyes, and I could hear my sweet mother’s voice saying, “Traci, honey, you are exhausted.  Don’t you worry about writing about me.  Go to bed, sweetie, get your rest.  I want you to have a good day tomorrow.”

For those of you who know my mom personally, I know you can hear her saying those exact words too.

Mom always knows best.

So I am going to listen to my mama and go to bed.

I hope you understand.

May each of you who took the time to read these words find God’s richest blessings upon you today.

All my love,

Traci

Furniture Re-do for the Patio

August 9, 2010 AT 11:57 pm 43 Comments

I am linking this project to…

Visit thecsiproject.com

I wanted to show you a table that I painted for my back patio.

It used to be my mom’s, and she gave it to me several years ago to use in my home.  Originally, it was cherry, but Mom suggested that I paint it black.  Mom was the Queen of painting furniture!

So I painted it black and put  silver drawer pulls on it.  (The original pulls used to be brass.)

It was in my kitchen for several years.

After re-doing my kitchen, I didn’t have the space for it anymore, so I moved it outside to our patio.

I also painted the mirror above the table to put on the brick wall.  I was hoping to reflect the beautiful scenery in our back yard.  I’m not crazy about the black mirror.  It’s not exactly what I was looking for, but it is good enough for now.

I decided that the table would show up better on the wall if it were painted white.  I thought it might look a little like this table from my  favorite inspiration spot, Ballard Designs catalog…(which costs over $300.00 by the way)….

So I grabbed some cans of white Krylon spray paint and went to town on the table.

Now, you need to know that I skipped many steps that should have been followed at this point.

I probably should have sanded the table with a sponge or liquid sandpaper, but I didn’t.

I should have also painted a base coat of KILZ primer to help the new coat of paint to adhere correctly, but I didn’t.

Why, you ask?

Two reasons:  exhaustion and lack of time

I’ve been so busy working this summer, that I haven’t had time for many projects.  So when I finally had a few minutes to work on a project, I skipped a few steps and went right to the final coat of paint.

I wasn’t really worried if it didn’t turn out perfectly because I like the “old” look and because I know that it is a piece of furniture that I will probably replace down the road.

The table had previously been painted black  with a latex paint.  The white spray paint I used was oil-based.  Not a good combo.

A weird reaction occurred and the paint did not go on smoothly.

But frankly girls, I just didn’t care.

I did grab one of my sanding sponges and sanded over the rougher patches, and then I added another coat of spray paint.

After all the pieces were dry, I used a medium coarse sanding sponge to sand down the edges.

You might be able to see in the next picture how the white paint did not adhere to the black paint and left sort of a “crackle” finish.  I just figured I would use my mistake to my advantage.  I knew that when I added the glaze, the “crackle” patches would give the furniture an aged look.

Next, I added a layer of my very favorite glaze, Valspar Mocha, to the top of the furniture.  You can get this at Lowe’s.  I bought it last year, and I believe it was around 15 dollars.  It has definitely been worth every penny!  I have used it on a ton of projects and I still have a lot left!

I just apply the glaze with a dry paper towel.  You have several minutes to “play” with the glaze to get it to look like you want it to.  I put it on a little thicker than I did on previous projects because I thought the brown would go well with the brown stain on our concrete.

You can make the glaze as dark or light as you want.  I usually use a wet paper towel to wipe down the glaze even more, but I didn’t with this project.

I know it is hard to tell by this picture, but the table now definitely has an “aged” look.

I tried to find new handles that would fit the drawers, but they didn’t have the size I needed at Lowe’s.  It’s hard to tell by the picture below, but the holes on the handle are wider than the holes on the drawer.  (That is my sweet Luke helping hold the handle up for the picture.)  ;)

I didn’t have any wood putty to fill in the old holes, so my hubby gave me this weird “fix-it stick” to fill in the holes.  I had to pinch off a piece of the “playdough-like” putty and kneed it in my fingers for a few minutes.  Then I filled up the holes in the drawers and let them dry for about 15 minutes.  After it was dry, I painted over the putty with white paint, and then I used a drill to make new holes in the drawer.

I added the new handles to the drawers, and I think it looks great!

By the time I finished this project, it was about 9:00 p.m., so I had to turn on the lights on the patio to take these pictures.  Sorry for the poor quality.

I love the way the table “pops” off the brick wall.  It shows up so much better.

Now I need to accessorize the table, but I am stuck right there.

I’ll worry about that tomorrow!  :)

Just to keep it real, I wanted to show you how I “butchered” the drawers with the drill bit and messed up the holes.  The handle does not cover the old holes, but I don’t think anyone will ever notice it.  I may fix the holes later, but I doubt it.

It’s good enough for me!

I will be working on accessorizing the table by Thursday.  That is the day I am hoping to show you some more accessories I have added to the patio as well.

But for now, I am just enjoying the look of my “new” table!

Drop Cloth Curtains for my Patio

August 9, 2010 AT 12:39 am 55 Comments

Ladies, I am very pleased that I have finally made some progress on my back patio!

Are you tired of hearing about it yet?

I am so laughing that it has taken me all summer to work on my back patio.  Back in the “before working full time” days, I would have knocked this patio out in a couple of weeks!

But noooooo…it’s only taken me about 10 weeks to finally get ‘er done!

I have affectionately labeled this projects as, “The patio that has kicked my tail!”

I was close to raising the white flag, but I didn’t give in.

Thankfully, I am finally lovin’ the almost-finished project.

I am hoping to share the final “reveal” on Friday.

Today I am going to show you the curtains I made for my patio from drop cloths.

No, big surprise there!  If you have read my blog for any time at all,  you know my love affair with drop cloths.  I even wrote a post about me being a “drop cloth connoisseur”.

Why do I like drop cloths? They are cheap, durable, already hemmed, and pretty!

I have drop cloth curtains in my kitchen….

drop cloth curtains

Drop cloth curtains in my den…

A chair with a drop cloth slipcover…

And now drop cloth curtains on my back patio!…

Somebody stop me!  :)

To hang my curtains, I purchased 1/2 inch metal poles from Lowe’s.  A five foot pole cost only about $1.37 or so.  I had to buy two 10 foot poles that were less than two dollars a piece.  I cut the 10 foot pieces into two 7 foot pieces for both sides of the patio.

I think it was less than 10 dollars for all 6 of these poles…

I spray painted the poles with KILZ spray primer (which is already white) and then put a final coat of white spray paint on top.

I also bought some little hooks to hold up the poles.  They were .67 cents a piece.  I bought 8.

My hubby helped me screw the hooks in the wood and put the poles up.  I spray painted the hooks white so they wouldn’t show up as much.  (Please pay no attention to the dirty spider webs.)  :)

I washed and ironed the curtains before hanging them with black ring clips from Lowe’s…

I have a total of 5 of these curtains on my patio!  The drop cloths were less than 10 dollars a piece at Home Depot.  (Remember, Home Depot drop cloths do NOT have seams down the middle, Lowe’s drop cloths do.)

Here’s a run down of the price of my patio curtains:

5 drop cloths -$50.00

5 sets of ring clips – $25.00

metal poles – $10.00

hooks – $6.00

primer and paint $6.00

Grand Total:  $97.00

That sounds like a LOT of money to me, and if I wasn’t working full time, I may not have been able to afford these.

But compared to the Ballard Designs curtains that I love…

(that would have cost over $500.00 for 5 panels), I am thinking I did pretty good!

Now I can pull the curtains out for some extra shade on the patio…

Or I can tie them back…

I will show you the rest of the curtains on Friday.

Tuesday, I will show you a furniture re-do I finished this weekend for the patio.

If you want to see all of my posts about drop cloths, just click on “drop cloths” in the labels in my side bar.

Have a blessed day!

Wednesdays with Wanda

August 4, 2010 AT 12:16 am 24 Comments

First of all, I want to thank you for the sweet comments and emails about my Wednesday with Wanda post last week about “worries”.

It seems that is a topic we all struggle with, and I appreciate all of your prayers so much!  And I am praying for you as well!

I will have to say that your encouraging words have really helped me to keep my focus on God this past week and not my worries.  So thank you.

This week is a bittersweet week for our family.

Today marks my sister, Cyndi’s, first birthday without Mom.

Mom  had a way of making birthdays extra special…tarting off with that early morning phone call, “Happy Birthday, sweetie!”, that we all treasured so much.

Please pray for Cyndi today.  If you want, you can visit her at her blog, cyndispivey.com, and tell her Happy Birthday or leave an encouraging comment, or just send her a tweet at @walkinhisgrace.  I know it would mean so much!

This week is also significant because Friday marks the one year anniversary of the day that we found out Mom had cancer.

My cousin, Darrin, is the head coach of the University of South Carolina basketball team (yes, I am bragging!) and was in town, and we were having a huge family reunion on my dad’s side of the family at my house that night.

My family had helped me get my house ready for the reunion (including Mom planting flowers by my front steps), and it was a great celebration!  You can read about it HERE.

Late that afternoon, Mom had an appointment with a new doctor to see if she could find out why her face was swelling and she was so sick.  After the appointment, she was planning on going back home because she wasn’t feeling well enough to join us at the reunion.

She insisted that we all stay at the reunion and not go to the doctor with her.

Little did we know that the doctor would feel a mass in Mom’s stomach and tell her before she left the office that he thought she had cancer.

My sister called Mom during the reunion to check on her, and Mom said she was fine and would talk to us later.

Mom didn’t want to ruin our evening.  She had decided to tell us after the reunion was over.

I often wonder what was going through Mom’s head during those hours she sat alone at her house while we were at the reunion.  She had just been given devastating news, and I know her heart must have been heavy.  But there is not doubt she was talking it over with her heavenly Father!

About 10:00 that night, after the reunion, I called Mom on the phone to tell her how great everything was.  It was the first big “event” I had ever hosted at my house, and she was so excited for me.  Dad was on his way home from the reunion as Mom and I talked.  I was smiling from ear to ear with excitement as I told Mom all of the details from the evening.  And she listened, and I could hear her smiling for me on the other end of the line.  She listened and listened for a good 10 minutes…I had a lot to share!  :)

Then she told me about her doctor’s appointment and what the doctor had said.

My heart sunk.

But in true Wanda fashion, she said she waited until after the reunion to tell me  because she didn’t want to ruin my special evening.

Always unselfish.  Always thinking of others.  Always strong.

That’s my mom.

I got off the phone and told my husband the news.  I immediately began looking up information about cancer on the internet and Mom’s symptom’s came flooding before my eyes.

I knew it was bad.

I cried myself to sleep.

Mom went the next day for a CT scan and the bad news was confirmed.  Mom had stage IV gastric cancer.    Our lives were never the same.

I can’t believe it’s been a year.

I have experienced sadness and emotions like I have never known before.

And at the same time, I have seen God’s goodness and sovereignty like I have never seen before.

Some of you are facing “life changing” situations right now.  You may feel scared, hopeless, confused, angry, or sad.

Please remember this,

‘Do not fear, for I am with you; do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’ Isaiah 41:10

Put your trust in Him today.

Blessings,

Traci
