Our Subway Tile (And Jo Totes Giveaway Winner!)
I love our white subway tile backsplash.
It’s simple, classic, and inexpensive.
I got my white tiles at Lowe’s. It was less than $25 a box, and we used less than 3 boxes to tile our entire backsplash. So it was less than $75 to create this classic look.
Here is the label on the box of tiles I used…
Cy used a 3/16 inch V-Notched Trowel to apply the tile adhesive to the tile.
He used Type 1 pre-mixed tile adhesive.
After applying the glaze to the back of the tile, he placed the tile in a brick pattern on the wall.
He used a tile saw to cut some of the pieces of tile around the sink, the outlets, and the corbels.
You can see that we butted the tiles right up next to each other. We did not want to have a large grout line between the tiles.
There’s nothing more sexy that this right here, right ladies?!…
I have a hard working man!
Here is the ready to use adhesive and grout we used between the tiles.
Here is what the tiles looked like after applying the grout and cleaning off the tiles…
Here is a tip when caulking between the bottom of the tile and the countertop:
Place a strip of painter’s tape along the top of the countertop and next to the bottom of the tile.
Then apply the caulk and smooth it out with your fingertip.
Once you are finished applying the caulk, lift up the painter’s tape, and you will have a perfectly smooth caulk line!
That’s it!
Now I need to announce the winner of the
fabulous Jo Tote’s giveaway!
The lucky lady is…
Vanessa from The 31 Lady!
Congratulations! I will be contacting you soon!!
It looks great! This is exactly what I’m doing today. I did most of tiling yesterday, now just finishing one side of the u in our u-shaped kitchen and grouting tomorrow. I look much like Cy does in those photos. I wonder if my husband thinks that is sexy? ;)
I love the tile! It looks wonderful!
That IS sexy!
The kitchen is coming along so nicely. I love the tile! Can you share where you got your corbels? I was just looking at the various ones in Home Depot—I love the way your shelves look. Sorry if you have already said this! Thanks :)
Happy Holidays!
Amy
I sure would think my hubs was sexy if he would let us remodel our kitchen! I’m biding my time and trying to save up and improve my DIY skills because I have the crazy idea to build our own cabinets! Needless to say, it’ll be a few years, but that doesn’t stop me checking in on all the amazing kitchen renovations going on and forwarding the links to hubby in the meantime.
Great work – I couldn’t believe the different the paint and upper shelves made!
Look how pretty your shelves already look!!!
LOVE this! My poor kitchen is in need of makeover in the worst way so I just love all these ideas! It sounds like this is something I can even do now for an inexpensive mini makeover :) Thanks for sharing all these tips and ideas!
Just $75..wow. Proves that you can do updates and improvements on a tight budget.
I have been wanting to do this, and you make it look so easy. I’m worried about the demolition though. I’m not too crazy about having to replace the wall board. Your kitchen looks fantastic! I’ll bet you can’t wait to use it. Thanks for sharing.

I just love the look of your wood countertops. I want to have them in my kitchen. I love the subway tiles. Your hubby did a beautiful job setting them. I’m really impressed by how he set them around the shelve corbels. You have such a lovely kitchen…
