There are some projects that you just HAVE to feature, even though you have seen it featured on other blogs.  It’s just. that. good.

Jessica, from Four Generations, One Roof, did an amazing makeover on her living room space.image

She collaborated on this makeover with the fabulous, Rhoda, from Southern Hospitality.  Just click on the picture to view this amazing transformation from start to finish.

Rachel, from The Olde Farmhouse on Windmill Hill, did a beautiful job re-doing this roll top desk.  I love the little wooden stool she used to accompany the desk too!

Jo at To a Pretty Life shows you how she made the adorable spice jar labels.  I would LOVE to be this organized some day!  Smile

My sweet (in real life) blog friend, Susan from Living Rich on Less,  linked up her beautiful neutral living room last month.   I want to encourage you to click on the picture and look at all of the beautiful pictures of this space.  It is so soothing and peaceful.  (I need a space like this!)  Smileimage

Kate, from Outnumbered, created this great storage space for her sons’ toys.  I am hoping to create something similar in Adam and Eli’s new room.

She built this storage unit herself!  Way to go Kate!  (Also the only female in her household. I feel ya, girl!)

image

Click on the picture to see what a difference this storage made in her sons’ playroom.

And I have to share this great mudroom makeover from Lori at Family, Love, Home.  She did a board and batten treatment on the wall, and I think it is just perfect.

Thanks to everyone who linked up last month!

I’ll see ya this Friday night for our next monthly party!

Meeting Annie Sloan in person and Learning about her amazing Chalk Paint

March 27, 2012 AT 2:02 pm 21 Comments

I was able to take a quick trip down to Franklin, TN this past Monday to participate in the Annie Sloan American Tour.

image

Some of you have probably heard of Annie Sloan before and some of you haven’t.

Annie Sloan is from England and is the creator of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.

image

image

Annie Sloan chalk paint has become quite a big hit in blogland over the past year.  Especially with the help of prominent paint bloggers like Marian from Miss Mustard Seed.

I have always been intrigued by ASCP, and I have wanted to try it out.  I am especially interested in the fact that you do not have to sand or prime a piece of furniture before painting with using ASCP!

Doesn’t that sound awesome?!

Well, Annie was coming all the way over from England for an American tour, and I was fortunate enough to get a free ticket from a blog reader, Liz.

Liz is an Annie Sloan stockist in Lexington, Kentucky.  She has a studio called Liz Douglas Designs that I am so excited about going and visiting SOON!  She is an absolute sweetheart.

The first part of the day, we got to listen to Annie Sloan talk about the versatility and quality of her amazing paint.   She was very entertaining to listen to, and I just loved her English accent!

The second half of the day, we got to go into separate workshop rooms to practice using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and Wax for ourselves.

(This was my favorite part.)

I was lucky enough to get in Liz’s workshop!  There she is in the hot pink shirt, and her husband is to the right.

ascp 015

We had supplies set out as our seat…

ascp 001

ascp 008

We listened to Liz tell us how to use the paints…

ascp 014

Then we got busy working with different paints and different techniques on the pieces of wood that were given to us.

phone 054

I was like a kid in a candy shop.  I am so in my “element” when I am painting or creating.  It was sooo much fun!

phone 047

Those paint colors in the bowls make it look like I was dying Easter eggs, doesn’t it?!  Smile

Well, we just go to practice on little pieces of wood, but Annie’s paint is capable of creating the most beautiful pieces of furniture.

Just look at these pictures all of which are from the Annie Sloan website.

image

image

I am soooo very excited about using Annie Sloan chalk paint on a piece of furniture now.

It makes me want to run down to Goodwill and just buy the first piece of furniture I see, so I can paint it!!

Thank you so much, Liz, for allowing me the opportunity to attend this amazing day with Annie Sloan!

As a side note, I also got to spend time with two of my very favorite bloggers while in Tennessee.

I met Layla, from The Lettered Cottage, in Franklin on Sunday night.  We ate dinner at The Loveless Café, and it was amazing!!!

image

We had fried chicken, hash brown casserole, amazing homemade biscuits and jam, AND coconut cream pie for dessert!  HELLO!!

We were stuffed!

Then we went back to our hotel and our sweet blog buddy, Myra, from My Blessed Life, joined us.  It was such a blessing to hang out with those girls for a night.  Of course, we talked all about blogging and sat on the bed with our laptops while we talked.  It was a little blog slumber party and my cup runneth over with gratefulness for my blog friends.

God is so good!!

Lastly, I wanted to announce the winner of the

$50 American Express Gift Card from Rentals.com!

Thank you to everyone who entered!

The winner is…..

Andrea Watts

Congratulations!  I will be contacting you soon!

A Bunny Trail Full of Easter Memories!

March 24, 2012 AT 11:28 pm 24 Comments

When I was at Blissdom in February, I had a chance to visit the Hershey’s booth!

image

It was a great booth to visit because they had baskets full of Easter candy that they were handing out all day long!  I may have stopped by that booth one or two or three… (ahem) times a day

Oh my, I love Hershey’s chocolate, don’t you?!

One of the cool things we were able to do was create our very own Easter basket full of Hershey’s goodies.  easter 003

We chose our basket items on a computer screen, and then a couple weeks after Blissdom, I received my basket in the mail!

Yum!

easter 006

I chose:

Cadbury Crème Mini Eggs – 12 ct.

Cadbury Mini Eggs

Jolly Rancher Sour Bunnies

Reese’s Mini Reester Bunnies

Reese’s Reester Peanut Butter Bunny

I got items that I thought my boys would like, so I could use them in their Easter baskets this year.

Over at the Hershey’s website site, they have a place for us to share our favorite Easter memories.

Two years ago, I shared with you some childhood Easter pictures that I found.  Here are a few of my favorite memories…

Every year we colored Easter eggs to take

to my grandmother’s house for the big Easter Egg Hunt.

image

(Cyndi, Blake, Me)

I was always so excited on the night before Easter when we got to sit our Easter baskets outside our front door.  I knew that the Easter Bunny would be hopping down the street as I slept and would fill my basket with lots of goodies.   We would awake on Easter morning, open the front door, and find our beautiful Easter Baskets wrapped in colorful cellophane!

image

(me, Cyndi, Blake)

I loved getting dressed up for church on Easter morning.

It was always a special day of celebration!

image

(me and Mom)

I especially loved it when we got to wear a corsage!  I loved the smell of those Easter flowers below my nose!

image

(Cyndi, Me, Blake, Mr. Inchworm)

But my favorite Easter memory of all has to do with my mom.  I shared this story two years ago, but if you don’t mind, I’d like to share it with you again.

I don’t know exactly what year it was, but I was in elementary school.

Mom was our Sunday School teacher at church, and she was always inviting other little children to come with us.

I remember for a while that every Sunday morning we would pick up a little girl across town and take her to church with us. She was probably 5 or 6 years old.

I don’t remember much about our relationship with this family, I just remember that this little girl was very poor and didn’t have much.

Easter Sunday was approaching and this little girl had told Mom that she didn’t have a dress to wear on Sunday morning. (She usually wore jeans and a shirt.)

Mom asked her what kind of dress she would wear if she had one? The little girl said she always wanted a pink dress with lots and lots of ruffles!

(I could see the wheels turning in Mom’s head.)

Mom was an amazing seamstress. She could sew anything. And her mind was set on making this little girl an Easter dress.

Because Mom was always busy and usually did things last minute (just like me), she started making the dress the night before Easter.

I remember going to bed and hearing the whirl of the sewing machine as Mom worked quickly to get the dress sewn before morning.

When I woke up the next morning, I could still hear Mom working on the sewing machine. She was putting the finishing touches on the dress. She had stayed up all night, never sleeping, to finish the dress.

Finally it was finished, and Mom held it up for me to see. It was the most beautiful dress you have ever seen! A beautiful pale pink with 3 or 4 layers of ruffles in the front. I remember touches of white lace on the sleeves and bottom, and it tied with a big pink bow in the back.

Mom quickly got dressed, and we were off to deliver this Easter surprise to the little girl.

Of course, she was so excited, and she ran in the house to put on her new Easter dress! I don’t know who was smiling more…her or Mom. (or me.)

That memory not only made it into my mind, but it made it into my heart as well.

I saw first hand what joy it brings to do things for others.

Mom had sacrificed her sleep and her time to bless this little girl, and I saw first hand the rewards our sacrifices can bring.

Mom showed me how to put the interests of others above my own.

She had always told me to do this, but she also showed me how to do this. Our actions speak so much louder than our words, don’t they?

It is an Easter memory I will never forget, and you can bet that little girl never will either!

Have a blessed Sunday!

A Glimpse into my Shed’s Future

March 23, 2012 AT 11:41 pm 20 Comments

On Wednesday, I showed you a little “treasure” I found in my shed.

I laughed at how many of you thought I was going to show you a big snake, raccoon, or some other critter.

Luckily, that is not what I found in my shed, but we do have those all around where we live.

I’ll show ya someday!

I know y’all were extremely jealous of the picture of my rust colored shed.  Smile

I think she has some potential, don’t you?

shed

Well, one of my readers sure does.

I got a sweet email from Diane after she read my post.

Diane is a self-proclaimed “shed junkie.”  She shared some adorable pictures with me, many of which are in this post.

Thank you, Diane!!

Seeing these pictures made me very excited about the “potential” that my shed possesses.  I see big changes in her future.  I little “nip”, a little “tuck”, maybe some color?

Voila!

Wow!  Isn’t she a beaut?!

Here are some more beauties for you to enjoy…

Not really diggin’ the little blow up thingy, though.  That thing would be busted in about two seconds flat at my house!

I found this beautiful shed online too.

It is the result of an amazing shed makeover at High Street Market!

Check it out!

Before and After pictures like that just makes me plain giddy!!!

It’s going to be a while before we can do a makeover on our shed.  But I’m hoping that we can paint it at the same time that we paint the exterior of our home.  I would like for them to match, ya know?

So, do you see potential beauty in my ugly little shed?

Easter Story Cookies {The True Meaning of Easter}

March 23, 2012 AT 5:15 am 15 Comments

My mom was the first food editor for Home Life Magazine from 1993-96.

Every month, she would submit an article for the magazine. One of her favorite recipes that she submitted was “Easter Story Cookies”.

image_thumb4

Photo:  http://www.mommysideabook.com/

If you “google” Easter Story Cookies”, there will be several links to other websites that mention Mom’s article as their source for this recipe.

Some people refer to these as Resurrection Cookies.

They are a great activity to do with small children to help them understand and remember the true meaning of Easter.

You will need:

Your family Bible
1 cup sugar
1 cup whole pecans
1 zip-lock baggie

1 wooden spoon
1 teaspoon vinegar
3 egg whites
tape

Preheat oven to 300° F.

Place pecans in zipper baggie and let children beat them with the wooden spoon to break into small pieces. Explain that after Jesus was arrested He was beaten by the Roman soldiers. Read John 19:1-3.

Then Pilate had Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip. The soldiers made a crown of long, sharp thorns and put it on his head, and they put a royal purple robe on him. “Hail! King of the Jews!” they mocked, and they hit him with their fists.

John 19:1-3

Let each child smell the vinegar. Put 1 tsp. vinegar into mixing bowl. Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross He was given vinegar to drink. Read John 19:28-30.

Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. John 19:28-30

Add egg whites to vinegar. Eggs represent life. Explain that Jesus gave His life to give us life. Read John 10:10-11.

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

John 10:10-11

Sprinkle a little salt into each child’s hand. Let them taste it and brush the rest into the bowl. Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus’ followers, and the bitterness of our own sin. Read Luke 23:27.

A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him.

Luke 23:27

So far the ingredients are not very appetizing. Add 1 cup sugar. Explain that the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us. He wants us to know we belong to Him. Read Psalm 34:8 and John 3:16.

Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him

Psalm 34:8

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

Beat with a mixer on high speed for 12 to 15 minutes until stiff peaks are formed. Explain that the color white represents the purity in God’s eyes of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus. Read Isaiah1:18 and John 3:1-3.

“Come now, let us reason together,” says the LORD.
“Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.

Isaiah 1:18

Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.” In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”

John 3:1-3

Fold in broken nuts. Drop by teaspoons onto parchment paper covered cookie sheet. Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus’ body was laid. Read Matthew 27:57-60.

As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus.Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him.Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away.

Matthew 27:57-60

image

source:  rhid-baked.blogpot.com

Put the cookie sheet in the oven, close the door and turn the oven OFF. Give each child a piece of tape and seal the oven door. Explain that Jesus’ tomb was sealed. Read Matthew 27:65-66.

“Take a guard,” Pilate answered. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.” So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard.

Matthew 27:65-66

GO TO BED! Explain that they may feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight. Jesus’ followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed. Read John 16:20-22.

I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.

John 16:20-22

On Easter morning, open the oven and give everyone a cookie. Notice the cracked surface and take a bite. The cookies are hollow! On the first Easter, Jesus’ followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty. Read Matthew 28:1-9.

After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.

There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it.His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”

So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples.Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him.

What a fun and delicious way to celebrate the Easter Story!

*****************

As a child, I loved Easter. The night before Easter, Mom would tell us to sit our empty Easter baskets outside on the front porch. While we were sleeping, the Easter bunny would “hop” down our street and fill up our baskets. Imagine our delight when we opened the door on Easter morning to see a basket full of goodies! I treasure those memories.

When I got married and our first son was old enough to enjoy this tradition, I was so excited to tell Jonathan to sit his Easter basket outside! However, my husband looked so confused?! He had no idea why I was putting Jonathan’s Easter basket outside. To my surprise, not every family puts their baskets outside the night before Easter. That was news to me! :0)

But now my husband just smiles when my boys put the Easter baskets outside before bedtime. He knows that it is a childhood memory that they will treasure too.

I also remember going to church on Easter Sunday. Mom always got us new Easter outfits, and sometimes she even got one for herself as well. :) Mom, my sister, and I also would wear Easter lily corsages. I loved wearing those corsages.

I could smell the scents of those fragrant blooms right below my nose all morning long. And as I sang hymns of praise during the worship services, my heart was overflowing with gratitude! My favorite song to sing was, “Up from the grave He arose…”

Oh, the celebration of Easter Morning!

The newness of life that we see all around us through the green grass, colorful flowers, and warm sunshine, are a beautiful reminder of the new life we have in Christ because of Easter morn.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

2 Corinthians 5:17

Have a blessed Easter!

Look What I Found in my Shed!

March 21, 2012 AT 10:08 am 37 Comments

The weather here is Kentucky has been unusually warm lately, and I have loved every minute of it!

I am so glad that Spring is finally here!

I’ve been “itchin" to do some Spring cleaning lately, but it’s kind of hard to do when you are in the middle of a major home renovation.  Smile

But one thing that I HAD to do quickly, because of the hot temperatures, was to clear out our winter clothing out of our closets and replace them with our Spring clothing.

For the boys, I was needing to head out to the shed and grab the tubs of hand-me-downs and go through them.  Luke gets Jonathan’s clothes, Adam gets Luke’s clothes, Eli gets Adam’s clothes, and Jonathan gets nothin’!  (He’s the lucky oldest child who always gets new clothes.)

shed 017

When we moved in to our home last June, we literally threw a ton of stuff into our shed.  I had no time to organize it.

I don’t think I have ever shown our shed on my blog.  It’s nothing much to look at, is it?  It is painted the most hideous colors I think I have ever seen in real life!

shed 018

We are hoping to do a little makeover on our shed this summer.  We’ll probably paint it to match our home.

Though our little shed it pretty ugly, it has been a huge help for us.  I don’t know what we would do without it!

Since I hadn’t organized the shed since we moved in, when I went out to find the tubs of boys’ clothes, I had no idea where they were.   I had to empty the shed of its entire contents to finally find the tubs I needed.

It was a total pain.

BUT it was beautiful outside, and it forced me to organize the shed.

When I opened the doors, my eyes quickly caught something in the back of the shed.

wall 003

There are two tall wooden cabinets in the shed that were left by the previous owners.

wall 001

I hadn’t really paid much attention to them because I figured they were full of junk or supplies.

wall 002

But once I cleared everything out of the shed and got to look more closely at the cabinets, I found out they were completely empty!

shed 025

They are dirty and need a new coat of paint, especially to cover up the little pictures of fruit on the front door…

shed 026

shed 022

But when I get my hands on these two cabinets, they are going to be PERFECT lockers for Jonathan and Luke’s room!

I love these wood lockers from Pottery Barn.  I could easily paint my cabinets and stencil a number on the front like these.

image

pottery barn

Or maybe wrap them in beadboard and add some cool handles…

image

I also think it would be fun to paint them a bright color like red!

What do you think?

Do you like the little surprise I found in the shed?

Do you think they will look cute in the boys’ room?
