Table and Chairs Makeover

June 21, 2009 AT 10:55 pm 21 Comments

This post will be a quick one! We have company staying with us this weekend, so I am a little short on time.

I bought a table and chairs from Goodwill for $55.00.

It was in pretty good condition, except for the seats.

I painted it white at first, but I disliked it so much that I didn’t even take pictures.

Then I painted the whole thing black and put a coat of polyurethane on top for durability.

I covered the seats with batting for extra cushion, and some extra fabric that I already had.

I was pleased with the result, but it is still a little too small for our family, so I will be selling it on Craig’s list.

It was a fun project anyway, and I hope you enjoyed it.

  2. It's gorgeous. If you want it larger, why not have a leaf cut for it and you can always cover it up if it doesn't exactly match with a table runner. Such a great find. Hugs, Marty

  3. Gorgeous! Too bad you can't keep it…but the next one will be just as lovely I am sure!

  4. Wow! Your table is really great. I'm not just saying this either! Someone is going to be very happy to have this in their home.

  7. You did a FABULOUS job-it looks great. You'll have to let us know how much you make on your table-on Craigslist.

My parents had that set and purchased it back in 1962. Same fabric on the seats but my parents recovered them several times. It was sold with a breakfront and a tea cart and a serving butler. My parents had all the pieces in their small DR. I wish I had those chairs today as the backs as so pretty. You did an amazing redo on that table. They sure do not make solid wood tables and chairs like this in todays world. I am sorry it is too small for you but it use to come with 2 inserts to make it a very long table and my parents purchased both. Your post redo is amazing and bought back a flood of fun memories for me. Thanks for sharing.

  10. Very nice redo. I have the same table only mine is round and I will be painting it too, only white, opps. Funny how we all love different looks. What was it about the white that did not agree with your choice?

What fun to fix it up even though you aren't going to keep it! I need to recover my dining room chairs but I'm afraid it might not turn out. Was it easy to recover them?

  20. Kathy says:

I need a table to seat our family. I had no idea it was so difficult!! (we have five kids two adults and a small small dining area)I have bad chairs and have never gotten around to covering them. I am so impressed taht you did this. I wonder if you could make money on craigslist.

I was thinking about how expenswive it woudl be to buy "new chairs" and that it might be cheaper (and so much better) to pay someone to redo my chairs for me…hm….

  21. AGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!Id totally love to buy it if we lived close! Its beautiful and I really want to do something similar to my set. It was given to us by my husbands great uncle who passed away. The pieces are very square…I love the curves on this set.
