Organizing Your Heart and Home – My Laundry Room

January 31, 2011 AT 8:17 am 30 Comments

Happy Monday Morning!

I am in serious recovery mode from my amazing week at Blissdom!

I was completely exhausted when I got back home.

This week I will be sharing some pictures of Blissdom and a little of what I learned while I was there.

But for now, it’s time to get back into Organizing Mode!

oyhh 2011-250

I can tell that many of you are wearing down like I am with all this organizing stuff.  We only had 10 link ups to my bathroom organization party compared to the 30 and 40 link ups for my closet and kitchen organization parties.  (I will share the winner of the linky party giveaway at the bottom of this post.)

So come one, ladies!  Let’s persevere!

There’s just one room left…

your laundry or mud room!

Since our laundry room is a new addition, I didn’t have any re-organizing to do, but I will show you some pictures of how we are storing our items in the laundry/mud room.

I built this shelf to hold some detergent and decor.

I will be sharing the tutorial of how to make this shelf later this week, so stay tuned!  :)

IMG_8715

I love seeing powder detergent in a glass jar in a laundry room, don’t you?  And the clothespin jar was a Goodwill find for $2.00.

IMG_8728

I am planning on putting any loose change that I find while doing laundry in the little fluted white bowl.

IMG_9004

I found this cute little blue antique fan at a garage sale for about three bucks, I think.

IMG_9001

My hubby also built some storage for shoes in our laundry/mud room.

IMG_8998

I don’t know about you, but we seem to have shoes lying in the floor of every room of our house!  Do you?

So we built a storage bench for shoes to hopefully help with this problem.

The lid of the bench lifts up and each boy has their own compartment in which to store their shoes.

IMG_8994

So far, so good.

IMG_8996

As you can tell in the next picture, I am still on the hunt for three matching baskets.  It is an awkward size to find.  I found these two at Marshall’s, and they fit perfectly, but I need one more!

I went to the other Marshall’s where I live, and they didn’t have any this size either.  So I am still hunting for three matching baskets!

IMG_9011

The hooks I got at Hobby Lobby.  I got them half off for about 3 bucks a piece.

Here is what it looks like when you exit our kitchen into our laundry/mud room…

IMG_9013

The boys hang their backpacks and coats on the hooks.  They love having their own hook!

I store hats, scarves, and mittens in one basket, and the other basket holds lunch boxes.

There is a little water heater closet in the room too where I store dirty clothes, and extra cleaning supplies.  I am still working on adding shelves to that closet, so I will share that later.

That’s it!

Now it is your turn this week to organize your laundry/ room.  I know there are some great posts out there because I have seen them!

I will try to share some inspirational posts with you this week as you work on yours.

And we will have a Laundry/Mud Room Organization Linky Party on Friday!

Now it is time to jump on over to my sister’s blog to find out how to Organize your Service to Others.

This is so important!!!

And it’s probably a part of our hearts that we all need to work on.

So click on her button below to visit her.

Organizing Your Heart and Home – My Bathroom Closet Makeover

January 24, 2011 AT 9:45 am 63 Comments

Welcome to week three of….

I hope you are enjoying this series as much as my sister and I are!  This has really helped me to get my home organized!

Seriously girls…I would have NEVER done this without you.

I love the motivation this blog gives me to get things done.  (Didn’t I say that last week?)

This week I am going to show you how I organized my bathroom closet (which isn’t really in my bathroom).  :)

And my sister is going to share a little about organizing your family time…so head on over to her blog when you are finished reading mine!

This is the bathroom in the master bedroom…

IMG_2985

It used to look completely different because my hubby and I did a complete makeover a few years ago (before my blogging days).

I love my bathroom, although there is nothing really “master” about it.  As far as storage goes, there is very little of it.

My husband and I have our toiletries under each of our sinks, and we keep our towels in the bottom of this black cabinet that we added to the space…

IMG_2963

The only closet in our master bedroom was behind this little door…

IMG_8739

Ain’t it purdy?

Yep, the bottom two panels on the door have had the mesh inserts missing since we moved into the house six years ago.  Yep…6.

(This door had to have those mesh panels because it has a vent inside the closet that has to be able to circulate air.)

Now, my hubby used to keep his clothes stuffed in this little closet (wish I had a picture of it, but we had already cleared it out before this makeover, and I forgot to take a picture).

But since we turned the laundry room into a master bedroom walk-in closet, we now had the space to do something different with this closet….it would be our bathroom/linen closet! (It’s just a few steps away from our bathroom.)

This is very humbling…but here is the before shot of this closet…

IMG_8736

Yikes!  Aren’t you lovin’ the brown on the back of the door that we never painted?

IMG_8737

This closet is located beneath our stairs, thus the slanted ceiling.

There used to be a bar than ran across the front of these shelves that my hubby’s clothes hung on, but we took it down.

IMG_8738

See the beautiful vent on the floor?  Well, my hubby is getting ready to relocate it so we no longer have to have a vented door on this closet!  Woohoo!

I took everything out of the closet….

IMG_8746

We did not paint this closet when we moved in six years ago.  I can guarantee that is has not been painted since this home was built in 1968!  It’s about time, doncha think?

Here is a look at the vent and yucky baseboard.  So glad my hubby is moving this vent!

IMG_8743

I don’t know why the baseboard looks like that.  I cleaned it off and it still looks all speck-ly brown with dirt.

So the whole closet got a fresh coat of white paint.  I had to use KILZ primer on some parts because it had been painted with oil-based paint.  You cannot paint over oil-based paint with water-based paint without priming it first.  The paint will not adhere and will just scratch right off.

We also took the door off!!  Yeah!

We used the leftover brown paint from our laundry room makeover to paint the back wall.  I thought it would help the white shelves stand out, and it did.

IMG_8750

This closet is a little dark, so I took the lamp off of my black dresser and sat it on the top shelf so I could see to paint.  The picture above only has one coat of brown paint on the walls.

Hey…I kind of like that little lamp in there…are you thinking what I’m thinking?

Now all we needed was a door.  Hmmmm…

I got to thinking.

Our next project in our home is going to be the boys’ upstairs bathroom.

It has a bathroom closet that has a door on it.

We are planning to take the door off for our makeover and leave the shelves open.

I wondered if that door would fit on our closet? I went upstairs and measured the width, and whatdayaknow?  It was the exact length!

I was so excited!!!

It was a little bit taller, but my hubby just sawed a little off the bottom and we were in business!

IMG_8757

I love it!!!!

I love having the ironing board hanging on the door.

IMG_8756

I found the adorable chicken wire baskets at T.J. Maxx yesterday, and I had to get them.  It was the only money I spent on this makeover, so it justified the $40.00 I spent on all four of the baskets.

The little wash cloth basket had a liner in it too, but I took it out because I like seeing the washcloths behind the wire.  I did the same thing to the basket that holds the toilet paper.

I had to had the greenery to hid the cord from the lamp.  :)

IMG_8766

These are my “his” and “her” baskets.  I might add labels to them in the future.  They hold our personal items that do not need to be in the bathroom on a daily basis.

The lace had little brown buttons on it that I cut off because I thought it made it look a little too country.

IMG_8759

Here are a few shots with the lamp on.  It makes the closet so bright and cheerful.  I cannot tell you how much I love this closet.  I don’t even close the door now.  :)

IMG_8783

The lamp I already had (paid $10.00 for it at an antique mall last year), the bird was from the dollar store, and the white vase was a dollar at Goodwill.

IMG_8784

Here are the before and after pictures….

IMG_8736

IMG_8757

Woohoo!

It was so worth the time and effort to complete this makeover.

I also cleaned up the area under my sink in the bathroom too.  I will share that later this week.

Now it is your turn!!

Time to clean up that bathroom!!!

Remember, you do not have to paint or do a makeover like I did.

Part of the reason that I am doing more than I normally would is because our house is for sale,

and I am hoping these makeovers will help make our house more appealing to buyers.

I will be hosting a “Bathroom Organization Linky Party” on Friday!

Won’t you join me?!

There will be a giveaway!

Now it’s time to hop on over to my sister’s blog

for her very important series on Organizing our Hearts.

She is going to be taking about Organizing your Family Time.

Blog Swapping with Beckie from Infarrantly Creative and Knock Off Decor!!!

January 20, 2011 AT 12:19 pm 8 Comments

I am so excited to be blog-swapping with Beckie today!

I am even more excited to be seeing her at Blissdom next week!!!

Beckie is the talented woman behind two amazing blogs!

If you haven’t met her yet, you are in for a treat!

Here she is….

Hello Beneath My Heart readers!  I am Beckie from Infarrantly Creative and Knock Off Decor, my newly launched site.  I am excited to pop over to Traci’s house to say hi to ya’ll (I think that is how Traci says it, right?)
I am a lover of all things creative.  My absolute favorite projects are my Roadkill Rescue projects where I find curbside castaways and turn them into usable, and beautiful decor for my home.  Today’s project started out as Roadkill.  Yes, I know you see why someone threw this away.  It is altogether hideous. I am sorry if this is yours and you hand painted it.  Forgive me for my frank analysis. But someone must have hated it also since they threw it away. just sayin.
woodtoolcaddyI liked the shape and knew it was just the perfect size for me to store all of my bath products in.  I LOVE taking bubble baths and perusing the latest Pottery Born or Ballard Designs catalog.  However, they end up all over my bathroom floor because I have no place for them.  We needed to fix that.
I lightly sanded the duckies and the rest of the caddy with 120 grit sandpaper and then I primed and painted it.  For the paint, I mixed Glidden Smoky Charcoal with Behr’s Pearlesent Medium.IMG_2077 It looked much better but it still needed more. After I distressed it a bit, I mixed some glaze with some Deco Art Silver paint and glazed it with that.  Then I added some black acrylic paint to my glaze and glazed it again.  It gave it the perfect depth of color I was shooting for.metallicfinish
In honor of Traci’s Silhouette giveaway I decided to use my Silhouette and add some premium vinyl to the side of the caddy using the words, “Restore, Revive, Refresh, Renew, Rejuvenate.”  Those words truly describe how I feel about this little luxury of life.bathcaddy

Then I added all the the things that make a bath luxurious.bathcaddy2bathcaddy3 Perfection!
I would love for you to come over for a visit.  I promise you will have fun!  Thanks for having me Traci.  Bye ya’ll.

Isn’t she great?!

Revisiting Blissdom ’10 and Looking Forward to Blissdom ’11

January 19, 2011 AT 9:54 am 38 Comments

First of all, if you haven’t already,

be sure to click HERE and pop on over to my Silhouette Giveaway post

so you can win one of these!

silhouette

Woohoo!

Last year, I had the most amazing opportunity to go to Blissdom 2010.

It was a complete unexpected blessing.

My mom had just passed away 4 months earlier, and I was still grieving her absence in my life.

Posts about Blissdom began popping up all around blogland last January, and I wondered what all the fuss was about.

I had no clue what Blissdom was or why I would even need to go.  All I knew is that some of my very favorite bloggers in the world were going, and I was dying to meet them in real life.  :)

There was a writing contest to win a ticket to Blissdom, and I entered it.  I wrote about my mom.  You can read about it here.

I almost won.  It was really, really close.  But I didn’t get the ticket.

I was crushed.

Until my sweet daddy said he was going to buy me a ticket to Blissdom because he knew Mom would want him to.

I couldn’t believe it!  I was thrilled.

Until he went to purchase the ticket, and they sold out only an hour earlier.

I was crushed again.

I wanted to go so badly.

Without me knowing, my hubby and dad actually contacted one of the Blissdom Leaders to see if they could still purchase me a ticket.  They emailed them back and told them I could get a ticket!

Unbelievable!  I was going to Blissdom!

So I started making plans.  My sister was going to go with me, but not attend the conference.  She and I were needing some sister time together.  Life had been really heavy since Mom passed away.

So this little girl and her little blog went to Blissdom ’10!

Remember how I said I wanted to meet my favorite bloggers?

Well, look at this…

IMG_5429

Yep…That’s Rhoda and Layla!

Rhoda was my angel last year.  She took me under her precious wing and introduce me to all the “home” bloggers.  She saved me seats at tables and invited me to hang out with her.  Rhoda’s blog was one of my mom’s favorites and I know why!

I got to eat lunch with Layla.  It was surreal.  :)  Yes, I texted my hubby and said I am sitting with Layla.  He texted back, “The Lettered Cottage?’”  I said, “yes.”  He said, “Wow!”

He understands me.

IMG_5442

And I got to eat lunch with this amazing lady!  Sandy from The Reluctant Entertainer.

She felt like a sister from the moment I met her, and she has continued to be a blessing to me this entire year.  I cannot WAIT to see her again this year!

And then there’s Sarah from Thrifty Decor Chick.  I didn’t get to hang out with her much, but I totally stalked her until I was able to get a picture.

My feet were not touching the ground in this picture!

IMG_5455

I have gotten to know Sarah even more over the past year, and she is a precious soul.  Can’t wait to see her again.  :)

Who else did I meet?

None other than Kimba, at A Soft Place to Land.

Totally thrilled to meet her!  She is beautiful and funny.

IMG_5456

I even got to see Kimba again at Relevant ‘10 in October of last year.  I have total “hair envy” when I am around her.  :)

Do you know this next sexy lady?

Yep.  It’s Kate from Centsational Girl!

Her blog has blown up this past year!

IMG_5457

I didn’t get to hang with her a lot, but I have had the blessing of getting to know her even more this past year.  She is so talented and has a great heart.

When I saw the picture of her kids’ Christmas tree on her blog, I couldn’t believe that it had the same candy garland on it that I had when I was a child.  It reminded me so much of Mom.

And do you know that sweet Kate bought me some candy garland and sent it to me all the way from California?  Just because.  It blessed my heart so much.  Thank you, Kate!

And look at this next picture!  That’s Melissa, from The Inspired Room, on my right and Nester, from The Nesting Place, on my left!   I could hardly stand it!!

It is the most amazing feeling to make your online friends your real life friends.

I got to hang out more with Melissa at the Relevant ‘10 conference, and she absolutely cracks me up!  She is one cool chick!

I didn’t get to talk to Nester much last year, but I am hoping this year I can get to know her better.   Since we are both the mom of all boys, I think we would have a lot in common, don’t you?  :)

IMG_5461

Here is a group shot of some more amazing bloggers!  I remember standing in this group and thinking, “What am I doing here?”  “Am I fooling anybody?”

Honestly…who cared?  I was having the time of my life!!!!!

IMG_5458

And my sweet sister hung out at the Opryland Hotel the whole time while I was “star gazing”.

She had to listen to all my blog stories every night when I got back to the room.

IMG_5448

But man!  Did we have fun!!!  It was just what my heart needed!

IMG_5449

Cyndi and I are going again to Blissdom in one week!!!

I am beyond excited.

I have so many blog friends going.  Most I have never met in real life.  It is going to be great hang with them.  :)

My sister is going to be attending the conferences this year.  I told her I was going to tell everyone she is my “blog assistant”.  :)

And we are going to be rooming with Richella from Imparting Grace.

DSC_1671

Isn’t she the cutest thing ever?

She has been my precious online friend for two years.  And she has faithfully prayed for me and my family during the loss of my mom.  And now I get to hug her neck in person!!  How great is our God!

Can’t wait to see you Richella!

So why am I going to Blissdom again this year?

Well,  I hope to learn more about blogging.

I hope to make my blog an even better blog in 2011 (for my awesome readers!)

But most of all, I hope to make even more of my online friends my real life friends.

I will still stalk my favorite bloggers.  I will be nervous.  I will be excited.

I will laugh and cry!

I will be blessed!

I’m so very thankful to be going again this year!

If you are going, please come introduce yourself to me!  I want to meet as many new bloggers as possible!

I will share a few fun posts from Nashville next week!

Have a blessed day!
