Front Porch Lights {Third Times a Charm!}

Hey sweet friends!  I’ve missed you!!

I sure hope you have missed me.  I have been MIA  for the past week because I have been getting ready for a big trip with one of my kiddos!  Today, we jumped on a plane to the west coast for the next FOUR WEEKS!

Yep.  Not kidding.  {Wish I could tell you more, but I can’t.}  :(

Hopefully, I will be able to soon!  {wink}

But for now, I am on the airplane and halfway to our destination.  I wanted to take a minute to show you the lights we got for our front porch.  You may think you have already seen them, because you sort of have, but not really.

Here’s the deal…

When I went to the west coast in August, my sweet, precious husband installed some porch lights.  Any normal wife would have been grateful and excited.  I mean….I was.   kind of.   I love my man, but really?  I’m a home blogger!  We’ve had this discussion a million times over the past six years.  He knows that he does most of the hard work, and I get to decorate!  It’s just the way we work.   I always “encourage” him not to pick out anything that is decor related because there is a one hundred percent pretty good chance I will not like it.

A few years ago, he installed a light over our kitchen sink while I was away at a blog conference!  We had had no light over that sink for a YEAR because I couldn’t decide what kind I wanted.  Sweet man of man, what was he thinking?!  We laugh about it now, and you would think he would learn his lesson, but alas…

He picked up these lights at Lowe’s, and installed them while I was gone.  Now granted, they are beautiful lights, and I actually loved them, but they were not what I was wanting for our front porch.  They were a little too traditional and I wanted something more simple without any curlycues.

I showed the lights on instagram and periscope, and many of you loved them.  But my fellow blog friend, Layla, agreed that her hubby, Kevin, would be in BIG trouble if he installed lights without checking with her first.  #crazybloggers

So we left those up for several weeks until I found some that I really liked, and he installed porch lights for a second time.

These lights had the simple look that I was after.  Cy was so sweet to take the other ones down and install these.

But there was one problem….they were too high.  I didn’t say anything at the time, because you know…I wanted to stay married.

So I let them sit for a few days before I gently mentioned it to Cy.  I hated to say anything because I knew that he would have to remove some siding, cut different holes, and add longer wire, but I knew that it would drive me crazy every time I drove up the driveway.  We have wanted this porch for four years, and we needed to do it right.  Luckily, Cy agreed that the lights were too high, he just wasn’t looking forward to moving them for a third time.

Since I needed to take pictures before I left for my trip, he spent about an hour moving the lights down, and we both are glad he did.  It looks much better now!  {At least to us!}

So what do you think?  Do you like these lights better, or the other ones?  You can be honest, ladies.  :)

Again, the other lights were beautiful, and would look great on another house, but they were not what I was wanting for ours.

We are 95% done with our front porch, and I can’t wait to share the transformation with you over the next week or so!

Well, it’s almost time to land, so I gotta go!

Have a blessed week, friends!!!

  1. Well, Traci, I hate to say it but I like the first ones Cy put up. I think they are a nice contrast to the straight forward no fuss doors. And I generally go for the plainer things! But your porch is beautiful either way!

  2. Bless Cy’s heart for wanting to surprise you with porch lights. True love = putting them up a third time. 😉 I love the lantern type ones you picked and also agree that they look better aesthetically lowered. Loving the door also with that cool glass. Looking forward to your reveal of the front porch.

  3. Love the finished look! I agree about these lights looking more simple but still elegant – and also they did need to be moved down. :) Much better. Love your porch!

  4. Too funny, the original lights are the ones we just picked for our new (to us) house! The new ones placed lower really look nice. Quick question…do you have your wreaths hanging from command strips? And they stay up? Are they made for outdoors? (Need to copy that idea!)

    1. Becky, I truly LOVE the first lights! I bet they look beautiful on your house. Again, I probably would have kept them on our last house, but I was going for a different look with this house. :)
And yes, I used outdoor 3m Command hooks in clear. I got the heavy duty kind, although the wreaths are super light weight. Thanks for stopping by! xoxo

  5. I like the ones you picked and do agree they look better lower. Very sweet of your husband, and they are pretty, but they would be too fancy/scrolly for my taste.

  6. The lights, the doors, the wreaths, all look beautiful. Cy, you are an angel…but don’t do any install on your own again…my husband learned that lesson also! You two are a great team…your home and family show it…

  7. Awhhhh! Thanks Cy!! Thanks for being a super cool husband!!! Your choice was excellent. Your patience with your blogging wife, priceless. The final outcome….. perfect! I love the look and I love your teamwork!!!

  8. i totally agree that the third time was the CHARM and the black lantern-style and height are now perfecto!!! Your husband reminds me of mine and he always maintains that “if mama’s happy, everyone is happy”. So happy that your hubby was willing to “listen to your heart” and “cheerfully” (?) make it perfect … now mama is happy!!! ❤️

  9. I like the lights your husband picked but both look nice. Mine is very thoughtful also but our tastes differ in most everything.

  10. Awww, that was so sweet of him. I like the lights that you picked out, but I have to say that I like the ones that he picked out a little bit better. Shhh, no one needs to tell him. :)

  11. You must have the best husband! I do like the new ones better and agree they needed to be moved but it just wouldn’t have happened for me. God bless Cy!

  12. I actually like the ones that Cy picked out. The others are nice but I prefer the first ones. And they look good at the level they were at and wouldn’t have had to be lowered! Sure wish we knew where you were going for FOUR WEEKS! We can only guess! Are you going to give us any hints?

    1. Hi Jan! Thanks for stopping by and sharing your opinion. I think Cy’s lights are winning. But that’s okay. :)
I wish I could tell you guys why I am gone for four weeks too!! I hope to be able to spill the beans after Christmas.

  13. I totally understand, you want what you want, and you want it where you want it – the reality can often match the vision – which it did here and they look great! I have one question…where do I find a man like Cy? LOL, he’s the best! Y’all are truly blessed and a good fit :-)

    1. Hee.hee. Yes, my man’s a keeper! I wish I could clone him! :) These are the frustrating yet fun times in our marriage that make for great stories and great laughs as we grow older together. I’m just keeping him on his toes! ha! xoxo

  14. I like your look but looking between the two pictures I think his lights say to the door look at me. They just bring a little something to it. So sorry. But he wins this one for me.

  15. I have “lived” with those decorator decisions that my husband has made at times and others I just couldn’t live with. I understand completely. We are actually going through the exact same thing right now. New front door. Old light. Can’t find the “right” one. I do like the second set of lights better, though.

  16. Alright Cookie…I have to add in my two cents…I like both versions; however, Cy’s version softens the right angles of the door and the “curly cues” mimmick the door handle. You rock Cy!

  17. I like both equally, but do agree with the poster who noted Cy’s soften the angles. Also, the photos of your choice are straight on shots versus angle/side shots of Cy’s.

  18. Great Job Cy!!! Tracy – EXCITING NEWS about the next four weeks. YA’LL are in my prayers friend! :)

    Blessings,
    Marilyn C.

  19. I think the one on the right looks a little higher?? Just kidding! This post made me smile. I think anyone married can relate to this! Thank you and your porch looks Beautiful!!

    1. DUDE! Don’t say that! You scared me! I’m thinking that my husband would have said “deal with it,” if I asked him to move them again. hee.hee. And I don’t blame him. :)

  20. I totally agree with you. I think the first lights were nice but the ones you chose look way better. And they were too high but now they are just right. The new ones match your home’s decorating style better.

    1. Thanks, Sharon! They definitely fit my style and the style I am trying to create with my home. I know that they will look beautiful decorated at Christmas. YAY!! Thanks for stopping by! xoxo

        1. Kathy,
I got the porch lights at Kentucky Lighting and Supply in Lexington, Kentucky. They had a name, of course, but I forgot to write it down before I flew out to California. I will have that information when I get back home. Thanks! ;)

  21. Lol! I know just the feeling. Searching for just the right way and time and words. 😅
Gone for four weeks!?! That’s awful! Hope it goes quickly for you and your family!

  22. Your front porch looks great. I have to say that I really love the first lights with the “curlycue”. The others look kind of ordinary. Just my little opinion! :)

    1. That’s totally fine! I know that a lot of people would like the first ones better, but I was going for a more simple look. :) Thanks for sharing your opinion, though!!

  23. okay, love the lights, love the height. Can you tell me about your doors ? Have an awesome 4 weeks on your mystery trip ! Blessings !!

    1. Hi Debbie!

We got our doors at a local shop in Nicholasville, Kentucky. It is called Elite Building Products. The owner had ordered the doors from someone else, but they didn’t like them so we got them at a huge discount. :) If you called them, ask for Rob.

  24. I have to say I definitely prefer the ones Cy picked out. My husband and I have a similar agreement: he got to pick where we live and I get to determine how we live (as in decor). It isn’t my business, but I think I probably would’ve lived with the first ones to give a little deposit to my husband’s “love bank”. They weren’t awful and were such an amazing surprise. I actually like them better. Having said that, it is your marriage and only you know how Cy truly accepts your opinions. If he is truly fine with it, then you are very fortunate and can have him hang lights as many times as you wish.

    1. Cy has been married to me long enough to know that he should have let me pick them out in the first place. :) He just laughs at the whole things and actually likes the lights I picked out better. I definitely have a gem of a husband!!! I make sure his love bank is full! :)

  25. traci,
The front porch looks great! I like that you painted the floor a couple shades lighter than the shutters. And the doors are amazing. As for the lights, the first ones were nice, but the second ones really mesh well with everything else. I am a fan of “less is more”, and the curliness of the first pair was too much. Kudos to you for baking the changes and staying married!
