Exposed Wood Beam Inspiration {for our New Home}

I have some good news….the flooring is being installed at the house as I type! WOOHOO! They will be doing one half of the house today and the rest tomorrow. I cannot wait to start moving our furniture in this week!
Today, I wanted to share with you some of my favorite exposed wood beam inspiration in home decor.
WHY?
Well, if you watched the last episode of Notes from Home (which if you didn’t, click the picture below to watch and see what I am referring to in this post,) you saw where our ceiling began to dip where we removed a wall.
To solve that problem, we decided to support the ceiling with an exposed beam. Usually, when I think of exposed beams, I think of a lot of them spread across a ceiling for architectural interest…
But we will not be adding exposed beams in that way. First all, we really only need one beam to support the ceiling, and it will be used to frame out the entry to our sunken den. And secondly, most of our ceilings are only 8ft, and a lot of exposed beams would make our rooms feel smaller and as if the ceiling was right on top of us.
In the last episode, I shared a picture I found on Pinterest with Cy from my favorite Home Designer, Shea McGee. She recently designed/built the “SM Ranch House,” and I’m in love with it.
I showed Cy that project because I liked how all of the large doorways were trimmed out with wood beams.
That’s sort of how I’m envisioning trimming out the entry way to the sunken den.
I will be using some black stair railing between the vertical beams and the steps into the sunken den, and I will share a post about that idea soon.

I love how these rustic beams frame out the kitchen window/sink area…
But my wood beams will not be as rustic. Mine will be more of just a smooth stained wood.
I LOVE exposed wood beams. I’ve always wanted them but don’t have any……..yet. I’d love to have that kitchen sink surrounded by the wood! Gorgeous!
I do love exposed wooden beams, but as you mentioned, I would want them smooth wood and not too rustic or rough. My MIL lives in a cabin in Townsend, TN, and while it is beautiful, and in keeping with the “mountain” feel, the walls in parts of the house get very dusty because they are more rough and not smooth. I know she didn’t consider this when they built this home/cabin about 15 years ago, but I do know she regrets it now. Sometimes it takes living with something to realize it wasn’t such a great idea. Oh, and while it may be possible to vacuum those, hers are 20 feet high on one wall so almost impossible to vacuum.

I really like the idea of the wood beams to frame out the large openings. I bet you are excited about seeing your family. I can’t wait to see the floors! I hope you are liking what you are seeing thus far!
I have a lake cottage that has exposed beams. They are smooth stained wood. They look really pretty with the wood ceiling we had installed to cover up the popcorn ceiling 😊 Our ceilings are 8 foot in our living room, but it still looks really pretty with the beams. This is a 50 year old house…

I love the way you are implementing the wood beam in your new home. You and Cy have a gift for tearing down and renovating. When I first saw your video of your new home…..I was like……holy cow how will they put this house back together! I had no vision! But, you and Cy make it so simple, with a lot of WORK. I have an exposed beam here in my condo in the city of a Grand Rapids and it’s original to the building….. so about 150 years old !!

This is a great idea to frame out a large opening! I don’t have any exposed beams in my small home because … well … it’s too small with 8 ft. ceilings, but if I had a different style home, I’d be all over it!
Yes, I have them in my Family room and Kitchen. I love them!
