Four Gables Update – We have roofs!

Y’all, do I have a whopper of a Four Gables Update for you!!! The amount of work that has been done since my last post will blow your mind….cause it blew mine!🤯

In my last post, I shared with you how we were completing the ceiling joists and putting down plywood on the second floor.

Cy had also started building the corner walls on the second floor for the roofers to build the gables on.

If you remember, we are building this house except for two things: the foundation and the roofs. Cy can build everything else in the house, but we didn’t want to mess with the foundation. It had to be perfect. AND Cy does not like heights. Our four gables are SOOOOO high…and Cy doesn’t not have the equipment to build and shingle roofs like that!

So Cy has started building our front porch…

We have a lot of room underneath our front concrete piers because of the lay of our land on the hill. We will be using some of that for storage, but we will also be adding several feet of fill dirt to the front of those pier columns to make our front porch steps not so high. I’ll have to share more about that later…when we actually do it.

But look at that view out the front door! (and it’s even greener since I took that picture!)

The roofers came out on a Monday and immediately started to build the rafters of the gables. Cy and I were AMAZED by how quickly they worked!!

Seeing these gables go up really made the house come to life!

By Tuesday, the house looked like this…

It looked like a complete maze up stairs, but it was so fun to go upstairs and see it start to take shape!

Then they added the roof decking on top of the rafters. They were moving so quickly, Cy actually had them go ahead and put the gray exterior sheathing on the sides of the upstairs walls.

We left for our family trip to Ellijay, Georgia on Friday, but the roofers kept working through the weekend.

While we were in Ellijay, our friend {Aaron} sent us pictures of how the bundles of shingles were on the roof waiting to be installed, and how the back porch roof was being built…

Aaron also sent us photos of the progress on the front porch while we were gone. 😳. It was crazy how fast they worked!!

By Sunday, the shingles were installed and the back porch roof almost built. We went with a very light gray shingle to help match the metal roofing we would be putting on the lower roofs.

The shingles are from TAMKO and called Heritage Glacier White. I love them so much!!

By the time we got back from our trip to Ellijay, and one week from when they started, the back and front roofs were covered with roof decking!

It is soooo exciting to see the house coming all together!

Can you believe how much work they finished in one week?!! CRAZY TOWN!

After they finish the rest of the lower roofing, the rest of the house build will be done completely by Cy and the boys.

We are so excited! Stay tuned for more updates!

  7. Great news about the house! Excited to watch the progress.
I had valve replacement surgery 2 years ago. Easier than I thought it would be (and I’m no spring chicken!). The frustrating part was all the rest I needed for a couple of months…but I got caught up on some reading, Hallmark movies and a little sewing (when I could move my arms “out”)
I’ll be thinking and praying for your dad!!

    1. So glad you were able to recovery from your surgery! I’m praying my dad will have the same experience, and he already loves reading and hallmark movies, so he won’t have a problem with that! haha! But he will NOT like that he may not be able to work in his garden as much. Thank you for your prayers!

  8. So glad your dad’s procedure went well and prayers for a successful surgery and recovery in June! Your house looks amazing and will be such a treasured gift for your family! Love that Cy and your boys are building it! Thank you for the updates, Traci! Happy Mother’s Day!
