My Home is Featured in Cottage Style/Vintage Style Magazine!

Hey friends!

I hope you are having a great start to your week!  Yesterday, I got something fun in the mail!  It was a copy of Vintage Style magazine with my home featured in it!

It’s pretty cool to FINALLY see my home in a magazine, because I have a love/hate relationship with magazines.  haha!

Let me explain…

In 2013, Better Homes and Garden came to my home to shoot it for an upcoming magazine.  They wanted to feature the DIY projects I had done in my den, my kitchen, and my office.  Unfortunately, when they got here, the stylist completely changed the look of my home and styled it in a “boho-chic” kind of way.  #boo

I was so upset that day and called my husband in tears because I couldn’t believe how different my home looked when they were taking their pictures.  To me, it looked horrible, but who was I to say?  It was freaking BETTER HOMES AND GARDEN in my house!  I didn’t feel I had the right to tell their stylist that I didn’t like what they were doing.  (You can read more HERE.)

My biggest regret is that I didn’t take pictures of the way they style my house that day on my phone.  danggit!

Anyway, it was a HUGE disappointment, but not a surprise, when BHG called me a few months later and said that the stylist had an “off” day and the photos did not turn out the way they had hoped.  It didn’t matter that I had literally spent thousands of dollars getting my house ready for the photo shoot, the pictures were not going to be featured in their magazine.

Less than a year later, I got another request to be featured in lesser known magazine, and I hesitantly accepted.  The photographers that came this time were TOTALLY different, and they tried to keep my style throughout the home.  About a month before the photos were supposed to be published in the magazine, the publishing company went out of business and it never ran.

By this time, I couldn’t help but laugh and just realized that my home being featured in a magazine was just not in the cards for me.

Funny thing is, BHG actually finally ran some pictures of my kitchen in their magazine last year, but they didn’t mention my name or my blog or give any credit to me at all.  #notcool. You can read more about that HERE.

Well, to my surprise, a couple of months ago, I got a call that the pictures taken by the second photographers that came to my home were actually going to be published.  WHAT?!

I was excited, but not too excited.  I’ve learned not to believe it until I see it….haha!

So when I got the mail yesterday, and actually saw my home featured in Vintage Style magazine, I couldn’t believe it!  It’s a 6 page spread of my den, kitchen, boys’ room and bathroom, and master bedroom and bath.

My favorite line of the article is “I have DIY in my DNA!” because that is the truth!  Several things have already changed in our home since these photos were taken, like the wall space behind the couch in the photo above…

Cy custom built these bookshelves to go in that space behind the couch.

And we have even made a few more changes in our den since the photo above was taken in 2016.  We have added a rug and moved the large couch to the other side of the room and put two new wicker chairs in front of the window to allow for more seating.

Here is a shot I grabbed of our den on my phone just today…

It’s a little grainy, but you get the picture. :) We painted the back of the shelves gray to help the items inside stand out, and changed the light fixtures.   Our cat, Journey, loves the new chairs.  They are her favorite spot in the house!

Anyway, they also shared the industrial shelves we built in the boys’ room back in 2014.  You can read the tutorial of how we did it HERE.

You can also find pictures of our master bedroom and bath that have never been on my blog.  The photographers did a sweet job styling those spaces for the magazine.

I have not checked to see where these magazines can be found, so if you spot one somewhere, let me know! ;). It is supposed to be displayed until October.  I am going to try and purchase a few extra copies for family.

  1. I would love a copy of the magazine…but I am Canadian and have never seen this magazine before. So glad your home was finally featured,…you have a lovely magazine worthy home!

  2. Hi Traci, I also remember a picture of your couch in that magazine and the pillows didn’t get puffed. You were so funny about that. I was with you all the way because I also like my pillows fixed and not all crushed. Especially for a magazine picture. I will check around here for the current Vintage Style magazine. Congratulations your house is always beautiful!

  3. I love what you’ve done to your den now. It looks cozy. But I want to say I read where a Country Sampler came to feature a woman’s house and did it their way and she told them and they let her style it the way she wanted. It looked good if you like primitive. I think you shouldn’t be fearful of expressing your opinion about the style of your own home. Your home is beautiful just the way you’ve styled it.

  4. Congratulations! I will be watching for the magazine next time I am checking out at the supermarket!

  5. Congrats You finally made it and a living magazine published your truely home / interior style!!
The actual look of your living area looks aery, light and cozy and the bookshelves look much better now than before.

  6. I’ll be on the search for that magazine here in Indiana. By the way, love your Flower Garden Quilt. I have one on my bed, too! My grandmother made it when my dad was a baby, over 80 years ago. ❤️

  7. I found the Vintage style magazine featuring your house in our local Sam’s Club! Your house looked amazing as always. Keep up the inspiring work!
