Four Gables House Update! {Siding}
I have another Four Gables House Update for you today!
In my last post, I showed you how we got all our windows installed in the house.

Since then, Cy has been working on adding the siding to the exterior any chance he can. It has usually been on the weekends and a little in the evenings, but it’s a slow process.

Plus, the heat and humidity has been OFF THE CHARTS this past month, so Cy has really had to be careful not to over do it.
Sania and I have been helping him too, so he doesn’t have to make so many trips up and down the ladders.

The siding we are using is LP SmartSide Siding. Cy LOVES this stuff. We have used Hardieboard on other homes, buy Cy likes LP Smartside better. It’s lighter weight and just as durable.
A couple of weekends ago, our married son, Adam, (isn’t that crazy?!!!) and our friend, Aaron, came to help Cy. They got a lot of work finished on the side and the front porch. It’s always more fun when we have people there to help us. 😂

While they were there, Cy kept plugging away on the back porch.

The siding is primed, but we will be painting it all white.

I went up to the hill this afternoon to get the most current shot of the front of the house. We are making progress! (FYI: We will eventually bring in 4-5 feet of fill dirt in the front of our house, so you won’t be seeing all of the concrete block columns. The distance between the front porch and the ground will be about half what it is now.)

A lot of people who build this house will do board and batten on the top and siding on bottom, OR board and batten all over. Here are some pics…

I shared these photos on instagram and asked my followers which way they liked best. Here were the results…

The majority said to do board and batten on top, what do you think?
Let me know in the comments!
Have a blessed day!
xoxo, Traci

Hi Traci, your home is beautiful! My vote is for board and batten.
Thanks!
I think board and batten on the top.
I’m so concerned about Cy and others up so high on the ladders. The uneven ground etc. Please invest in or rent scaffolding. I know it’s expensive but you will use it again down the road when you paint, wash windows etc. My dad was on a ladder only up like 30 ft. And he was cutting top of small trees and one of them hit him and he fell off and it killed him. I’m so afraid of anyone being on a ladder. My husband has scaffolding now. He was the paramedic on my dads accident. It’s more work to set up and move for sure, but ladders are so dangerous when using your arms like doing siding etc. In the heat you talk about you have to keep Cy hydrated or he could get dizzy. Please, please be careful. I could hardly look at the pictures. My dad was 63 and in good shape and only 2 yrs from retirement. Changed my moms life and the rest of our family for sure. My brother was with him. 😩I’m going to committ to praying for Cy and your sons and all helping. Bless you. Your house is looking so nice.
I’m gonna lean toward board and batten every time 😊
:)
I echo Kathy’s concern, but I’m afraid of heights. I’m going to assume that Cy knows what he’s doing and that the Lord will keep His hand of protection on him.
Regarding the exterior, I love either look but I think the board and batten gives more detail and uniqueness to the exterior. But, I know that whichever you choose will be amazing!!
Board and batten! The house is looking great!
Traci,
I was waffling for either way but think I agree the board and batten gives more detail look so, board and batten is my vote. I enjoy all of your content on IG, garden, home, and family. Keep it up. Hopefully the humidity will start to lower for a beautiful fall.

Thank you, Liz!
Board and batten. It’s going to be gorgeous! So happy for you! Prayers for safety for everyone.
Board and batten. It’s looking good!
Definitely board and batten in my opinion:)
Horizontal siding. It’s less busy. There is already alot going on visually with the corners and angles. Plus it looks more like traditional farmhouse style. Either way it’s beautiful!
Thanks, April!
Seems like board and batten wins the prize! I also think it gives the house more character and interest. 😊
I’m leaning a little toward the board and batten, but either way it’s going to be amazing!
I’m going to be an odd-ball and say I like the “all siding” on this house plan.
It’s going to be beautiful whatever you decide to go with. Can’t wait to see the progress in the coming months. :)
I agree with Patricia, all siding. I think having siding all over is more classic. You can add your creative touches with shutters, railings and landscaping.
I love the board & batten on top. But it’s going to be beautiful no matter what you choose!
Thank you, Stephanie!
Board and batten definitely
Definitely agree with the board and batten on your gables! We purchased and updated our lake home three years ago and added board and batten on a blowout of our loft and also on our covered alcove porch on the front of our home. We chose cedar shake (same color grey as the home) at the top of our gable on the front and back of the home. We get so many compliments on the character and charm we added to our home from our neighbors and guests! Our mistake came in not using the board and batten on the side of the blowout! Tried to save a little money! :( Thoroughly enjoy seeing all your progress and decorating Traci! You are incredibly talented! God has given you a wonderful gift! Thanks for sharing your life with all of us!
Thank you Cherie! Your lake home sounds beautiful! How fun! :)
all siding!
All siding! So cool! I see many board and batten houses that start coming apart and look ratty. NOT that I’m saying yours would, ever, with a handy hubby. But when you drive around, start to notice…
I like the board and batten; it makes a nice contrast. I’m a little confused though on having to paint the siding. I thought the beauty of siding was that you didn’t have to paint it. I’m sure there is a good reason; I’m just curious to know.
I think board and batten on top. It’s going to be beautiful either way.
I’m in the all siding camp. Just seems more like an old house you would see in the country. Love watching the progress.
Definitely board and batten on top..
I think you have an eye for things so I have confidence you will pick what looks best. I like both!
Thank you, Leslie!
