We finally stained the back porch at Four Gables, y’all! I’m gonna share all the steps to staining with you today!

Our back porch is Cy’s favorite part of our house. We have been hosting get togethers on it ever since we built it, even though our house wasn’t even close to finished.

So many nights, we have sat out on our unfinished porch and dreamed of all the wonderful memories we will make on it with our children and grandchildren. It’s where we will sip sweet tea, watch the sunset, and share long conversations.

But before we could enjoy it fully, the wood needed protection and a little personality.

We decided to use Cabot’s solid stain—and y’all, I’m so glad we did. It not only transformed the look of our porch but also gave us peace of mind knowing the wood is sealed against the elements. Today, I want to share the exact steps we took to stain our porch, what we learned along the way, and some helpful tips so you can tackle a similar project with confidence.

Why We Chose Cabot’s Solid Stain

When you’re standing in the paint aisle staring at shelves full of stains, it can feel overwhelming. There are semi-transparent stains, clear finishes, and then solid stains. Here’s why we chose Cabot’s solid stain for our porch:

  • Durability: A solid stain gives wood the longest-lasting protection from UV rays and moisture.
  • Rich color: I wanted a more painted look without losing the natural texture of the wood grain.
  • Low maintenance: With a large family, several pets, and lots of porch traffic, I didn’t want to re-stain every year.
  • Trusted brand: Cabot has been around for over 140 years, and I’ve heard so many good things from DIYers and professionals alike.

I knew I wanted to stain my porch a warm gray color, so I started looking that the colors that Cabot offered. Then the Lowe’s employee in the paint department told me that I could actually tint Cabot’s solid stain any HGTV Home/Sherwin Williams color. I had no idea you could do that! 🤯 Did you know that?

I was so excited, because that gave me sooooo many more color options for my porch! The color we picked, SW Ethereal Mood, was the perfect balance of classic and cozy—just right for the welcoming porch vibe I was going for.

Step 1: Preparing the Porch

This is the part most people want to rush through, but I can’t emphasize enough how important prep work is when staining wood. If you skimp here, you’ll regret it later when the stain doesn’t adhere properly.

  1. Clean the surface thoroughly.
Since our porch is new, it didn’t need a deep clean. We swept away dust, dirt, and leaves, and then used a power washer to rinse of the deck. If you have an old or very dirty porch, then I would suggest a deck cleaner to wash the boards and remove mildew or any stubborn spots. Cabot even has its own cleaner, which works beautifully.
  2. Let it dry completely. Don’t rush this step! Wood needs to be bone-dry before you stain it. We waited about 48 hours since our weather was humid.
  3. Check for rough spots. If needed, lightly sand any splinters or uneven areas. This not only makes the surface smoother but also helps the stain go on evenly.

Step 2: Protecting Surrounding Areas

Before opening the stain can, I grabbed painter’s tape and taped along the siding of the house and the base of the columns. Since we are still building on our house, I didn’t need drop cloths to cover any landscaping, but you may.

A little prep on the front end makes the whole process smoother and stress-free.

Step 3: Stirring and Testing the Stain

When you open a can of stain, don’t just dip in your brush right away. The pigments can settle at the bottom. I stirred the Cabot stain thoroughly until the color looked smooth and consistent.

Before committing to the whole porch, we tested the color on a small, hidden section of wood. This gave us peace of mind knowing it was exactly the look we wanted. (Spoiler alert: it was perfect!)

Step 4: Applying the Stain

Now for the fun part! Here’s how we applied Cabot’s solid stain to our porch boards:

  1. Use the right tools.
We used a high-quality brush for cutting in around the edges and a roller for the large flat areas. This combo saved us both time and arm strength.
  2. Work with the grain.
Always brush or roll in the direction of the wood grain. It makes the finish look more natural and helps the stain absorb properly.
  3. Thin, even coats.
Instead of slathering it on thick, we applied a thin, even coat. This prevents peeling or bubbling later.
  4. Watch the weather.
Stain needs dry weather and mild temps. Thankfully, we had a beautiful weekend with no rain in sight.

It was so satisfying to see each board transform right before our eyes. The porch started looking warmer and more inviting with every stroke.

Step 5: Drying and Adding a Second Coat

Patience is key! Cabot recommends letting the first coat dry for at least 24 hours. We let ours dry overnight and then applied a second coat the next day.

The second coat really deepened the color and gave the porch a rich, polished finish. It also added that extra layer of protection I was looking for.

Step 6: The Final Reveal

After everything dried, we carefully removed the painter’s tape and put the furniture back on the porch. Y’all, I could hardly believe the difference. 😳

The porch went from bare, weather-vulnerable boards to a gorgeous, durable space that looked like it had been part of our home forever. We added our outdoor couch and chairs, our table and chairs, and some potted plants, and suddenly it was the perfect cozy spot to gather.

This porch will probably be the most used “room” in our whole house! 😂. The door by the outdoor couch leads right to the sitting room in our master bedroom! I know Cy and I will spend many nights out on the back porch watching the sun set.

Tips We Learned Along the Way

I always love sharing the little lessons we pick up during projects. Here are a few that might help you:

  • Don’t skip the test patch. Colors look different in natural light than they do on the swatch in the store.
  • Check your weather forecast twice. Even a surprise drizzle can ruin a staining job.
  • Wear old clothes. Solid stain does not come out easily!
  • Work in sections. Doing a few boards at a time keeps your edges wet and prevents lap marks.

How Long Does Cabot’s Solid Stain Last?

One of the biggest perks of using a solid stain is longevity. With proper prep and application, Cabot’s solid stain can last 5–8 years on horizontal surfaces (like porches) and up to 15 years on vertical surfaces (like railings). That means we won’t be re-doing this project anytime soon—and that makes me one happy mama!

Why This Porch Project Matters to Me

For me, home projects are about so much more than paint and stain. They’re about creating spaces where my family can slow down and connect. As I brushed on that stain, I pictured us sipping coffee together, watching my grandbabies (someday!) play in the yard, and hosting friends for summer evenings.

Every brushstroke felt like a step toward building memories. And isn’t that what home is all about?
