We’ve Started Building our New Front Porch!

Happy May!  Can you believe it is already MAY?!!!  Oh my goodness, where does the time go?

This weekend in Kentucky, the weather was spectacular!!  We got a lot of work done on our new front porch!  I cannot WAIT to get this project finished because we have been wanting to do it since we first moved in this house four years ago.

Here is our house the day we bought it

We built an addition three years ago, and this is what our house has looked like for the past year since we painted the brick (Notice we never painted the chimney because we knew it would eventually be torn down.)

To this point, our house has always looked like a ranch with an addition stuck on the side.  Because….well….that is what it is. :)

Our plan is to build a front porch with a gabled roof, sort of like the two pictures below…

The only difference is that we are building our porch out a little, with some actual living space, so it will be wrapped in the same hardy board siding as our addition to match.  Building the porch out will also provide us with an entry way and mudroom.  We will also be adding two gorgeous front doors to the porch.

Sort of like these….

  1. Love me a front porch. Our dream is to one day build our own home complete with a front porch and a three season porch in back. Looking forward to seeing yours. Those doors are going to be fabulous!

  2. I can not believe you have been in your house for four years! How time flies.I can’t wait to see the porch addition. I absolutely LOVE porches.

    1. Hi,

When you were looking at house colors to paint your brick, there was a great color combo that I wrote down. It was hazelnut cream and a truffle brown and the white had a hint of green. I had the white color written down but have lost it. Do you have it anywhere ? Love your project. I have just bought a similar house and want to paint the brick and would like to know what the color white it was and what the colors you chose are.
      Thanks for your help,
      Arolyn

  3. Always enjoy reading about your home and beautiful family. We’re interested in painting the brick on our house as well. My husband is not sure .. But I love the look of painted brick .. Any suggestions the pros and cons.. Welcome. Thanks! Sara

  4. So happy for you and can’t wait to see the results. I was trying to visualize it but it is difficult. Will the new living space be where the current porch is?

  5. great looking plans looking fwd to progress pix.
Off topic – how is Eli doing with the chicks ??

  6. I just want to tell you how much your blog and ranch renovation have inspired me! I love your story, heart, and family and love the way you are taking what you have and making it into something you love. I am a worship pastor’s wife of 3 years with a 9 month old little girl. My husband is from Lexington, KY and is a huge KY fan :). I am from SC and we recently have moved to Louisiana to take a worship pastor position at a Baptist church here. We have been home shopping here with not much luck for a couple months. I am used to southern 2 story homes and all of those are out of our price range here. There have been a lot of ranch style homes though! We are considering taking on one that would need some TLC but is in a great location. Your renovation of yours has inspired me that maybe I can make a ranch into the home of my dreams! And, I love painted brick. I can’t wait to see your new front porch :)

  7. Would you be willing to share the paint colors and type of paint you used on the exterior of your home? I love the off white and gray/black combo you used!
